A drop of relief sweeps across his expression, but then he frowns, tracing his thumb along my bottom lip. “You should let Jaxon heal you.”
I gape at him. I don’t know why I’m shocked. I’ve seen Jaxon fly for hell’s sake. “He can do that?”
He nods, sketching his thumb back and forth along my bottom lip. “We all have our little gifts.”
I study him curiously. “What can you do?”
A dark smile curls at his lips. “One day, Little Daredevil, I’ll show you. In fact, I think all of my brothers would love to show you their gifts. But I think we’ll start with the healing first.” He stands up with me in his arms and starts to leave the room.
“Wait.” I wiggle out of his arms and rush back to the bed to grab the book. A little bit of his playfulness leaves his eyes, and I find the need to apologize. “I’m sorry, but I just… I just need to know.”
“I understand that, but I think I should warn you that the answer you’re looking for isn’t in there.” He brushes a strand of my hair out of my face, his fingers lingering on my cheek. “We weren’t lying when we said there wasn’t another way to save you. You’ll have to feed from us and probably soon so we can leave here and find someplace safer. But I do think you should read the book, so you can learn more about yourself and what you can do.”
“I’m still going to look for another way until I run out of time,” I tell him as he steers me out of the room. When he frowns, I sigh. “I’m not trying to be a bitch, but if I can find another way to fix this so I can get back to my sisters, I’ll do it, especially after what I just learned about my father… or well, my sisters’ father.”
He turns around, muttering, “So stubborn.”
A smile starts to pull at my lips when a spark of heat touches my side. I lift the hem of my shirt up, and once again, reality bitch slaps me.
A spot of charred skin about the size of a penny is flaking off my hip.
I hurry and pull my shirt down, trying not to panic, but…
I think death might have just knocked on my damn door.
