Her words sealed it. “It’s not a dream, Florida girl. It’s Fate, and you can’t escape it.”
“I guess Rose’s pin worked after all.”
“What pin?”
“The heart-shaped brooch I’ve been wearing. Rose said it would bring me luck and love.”
“Is that what it brought you?” he asked.
“It brought to life the desires I’d been hiding from.”
“Which ones? Because I thought I had something to do with those physical desires.”
“You did. This brooch woke me up and made me realize I’d spent all my nights dreaming of you.”
His throat closed, and he hugged her fiercely to his chest. She held him with just as much strength. Nick brushed his lips against her ear and murmured, “Me, too.”
“You’re sure?” she asked.
“Positive.” He knew that although she said she hadn’t been looking for someone to watch over her, she’d found someone all the same.
“Then take me to bed and hold me close.”
Nick swept her up in his arms and carried her to the bed. “I’m going to make certain that you never have to settle for dreams again, Lila. You’ve got the real thing by your side for the rest of your days.”
“The real thing is so much better than dreams.”
“Let me prove it to you.”
Her smile said yes. He laid her on the rumpled covers and placed himself next to her.
The intensity he always felt when he was with Lila was tempered with a new peace he’d never known before. Their mouths engaged in long, slow kisses, kindling a fire that burned through them both.
He joined their hands together and their eyes met, silently acknowledging the deep and lasting bond they’d made with their lives.
Two days later Lila returned the brooch to Rose. She and Nick had just returned from dropping off her mom at the airport. Lila had been pleased at how well her mom and Nick had gotten along. The minute her mother had seen Nick she’d hugged him close. When they’d announced their engagement, she’d told him to call her Mom.
“Thanks for loaning me this pin, Rose.”
“You’re welcome. Did it bring you luck?”
“It brought me more than that.”
“Good, I think I may lend it to Meredith. She’s a little nervous about going on the auction block.”
Lila thought her friend was more than a little nervous. “Good idea.”
“You look better today,” Rose said.
“I feel incredible. You can be one of the first to know. Nick and I are getting married.”
“Congratulations, dear.”
“Thank you,” Lila said.
Lila went back upstairs and found Nick sitting alone at the kitchen table. “What are you working on?”
He tugged her onto his lap and kissed her with an intensity that usually ended up with them both naked. But not today. They were going to drive out and visit Mr. McKee and Charlotte and Myrtle.
He pulled back and reached around her to show her a piece of paper. “I was thinking about Rose’s brooch and I want to commission a similar piece for you.”
Her throat closed. “I can think of nothing I’d love more.”
“Not even me?” he asked, the words light, but she knew he still wasn’t as secure as he should be.
“I love nothing more than you.”
He pulled her close, his face buried against his neck. “I just want some of this luck for our children.”
“Me, too,” she said. They sat quietly talking about the future and the brooch. They knew that their bond would be strong enough to see them through the ups and downs of life and that they’d both found the one thing they’d never have had on their own…true love.
