Getting the fig cutting was easier than it would normally have been. One of the fig trees was putting up small shoots that weren't connected to the main tree at soil level, so I just loosened the soil there, found where the roots joined the larger tree, and cut them at that point. A small pot, filled with dirt, would do for keeping the cutting alive for a week or more since it was only about eight inches long. I packed the top of the pot with wet, shredded paper, then wrapped cling wrap around the whole thing to keep the soil from falling out. I did have to leave a few spots for air to get in, but as long as it wasn't turned completely upside-down the soil should stay.
When I went back in the house, Maggie was in the living room with Molly. I took the seed packages and the cutting, then placed them on the table in front of her.
“Happy Birthday!” I said.
“It isn't my birthday.”
“So I'm late, or early, or whatever. But I figure you can use these. Molly should have some written instructions for you.”
“I couldn't possibly...” she trailed off into silence.
“Yes you can. I have plenty more seed and I don't have room for another fig tree, so...”
“That's a fig tree?” she asked.
“It will be, given a year or two, at least if you follow the instructions for it.”
“Thank you?” she said. “That isn't enough, but...”
Oh shit, now she's looking at me like that again. I'm not famous or powerful, what the hell do I do now?
“Don't worry about it. Use what I'm giving you to provide Cindy with a better life and that'll be thanks enough,” I said.
“Well, our bus doesn't leave until tomorrow,” Maggie said. “If you don't mind us staying another night, I'll find a way to thank you after the children go to sleep again.”
Molly gave me a thumbs up from behind Maggie's back.
“We don't mind,” I said.
Oh boy, I could be in trouble if she really means it. This is gonna be fun!
The rest of the day passed swiftly. I made sure she had all the notes on the seeds and also gave her a couple weeks worth of the homemade dehydrated soup packages I sold at the market. By the time evening came around I was eager to see what she was going to do.
In the end it was more than I expected, and less than I'd hoped for. She simply stripped nude and told me that her body was mine to do whatever I liked with. Since I'd already done that the night before, it wasn't as show stopping as I'd hoped, but still a welcome offer that I took advantage of.
I saw her and Cindy off to the bus stop in the morning. The sun had been bright for the past few days so the solar powered buses that the state used for the transportation system were running right on time. She waved as the bus pulled out and I wondered if I'd ever see her again. She'd been a lot of fun, even if not quite as adventurous as I would've preferred.

When I got home Molly had a thoughtful look on her face.
“You know Tim, it was nice to have another woman around. Especially one willing to help with the chores. Do we have enough to hire someone to help around the house? Preferably someone that could help us out in the bedroom too, if you know what I mean.”
I knew we did, precious metals got a far better deal than bartering nowadays, and I'd never even touched the stash of 90% silver coins (pre 1965 US coins) that I'd purchased long before the economy came crashing down. I'd actually added to it from selling my goods at the market.
“I'm pretty sure we could figure something out. Tell me exactly what you're looking for,” I said.
