“My pleasure. I am very glad that we found you, and you are unharmed.”

Reggie glanced at the magistrate. “If we are not needed right now, Mr. Healey, I would like to take Lady Gallagher home. His Grace is worried sick about her.”

“I think we have most everything we need right now, My Lord,” he replied with a smile at Amalia. “My office will be in touch.”

  “Thank you.”

Reggie led Amalia outside where the big wagon lined with stout bars and a roof stood waiting. Both Eastcairn and Patrick sat inside, glaring at them as the constables finished locking its door. After the men jumped onto the steps and held onto the wagon’s sides, the driver cracked his whip over the team of four. Amalia watched the wagon roll out of sight, then clasped Reggie’s hand.

“It is finally over,” she whispered.

“Yes, it is.” He squeezed her fingers, gazing down at her. “I had hoped Patrick was innocent in all this.”

“I never thought he could have willingly participated in murder,” Amalia replied. “I expect that greed can change a person.”

Reggie guided her toward a line of waiting saddled horses, and the carriage Patrick used to kidnap her. “Yes, it can, Amalia. I will drive you home now. The others will return your father’s horses to the house.”

Though it was improper, Amalia refused to let go of Reggie’s arm as he guided the single horse away from the river. She gazed at the passing traffic and structures, the people striding along the sidewalks, the workmen going about their labors. “I love you so much, Reggie,” she murmured. “Can we be married by Christmas?”

“I do not see why not,” he replied with a grin for her. “I suppose a whirlwind courtship is in order. I daresay your father will approve.”

  “He will.”

“At a more proper time and place,” Reggie went on, “I will more formally ask you to marry me.”

“No,” Amalia said, gazing up at him. “I want to hear it now.”

Reggie’s grin widened. “Amalia Gallagher, will you marry me?”

She squeezed his arm, matching his grin. “Yes, Reggie Davidson, I will marry you.”

  About the Author

Born the oldest of three children, Patricia Haverton grew up believing that she’d follow in her father’s footsteps and pursue a career in science. However, her worldview changed when she decided to explore her British mother’s roots. The trip to her ancestral lands solidified her conviction that she had found her true calling in the romanticism of the Era of Kings and Queens.

A hopeless romantic and a firm believer in the idea of soulmates, Patricia changed the course of her life and decided to get her degree in Creative Writing and Psychology. As she jokingly says ever so often, “she lives in the past now, where love shows the way and Dukes save the day!”

When she’s not weaving tales of love that prevails, Patricia enjoys spending time with her husband, roaming the British countryside, where they have been living in for the past decade.

Now would be the time to let yourself go and experience the true magic of the Regency Era! Let your imagination run wild, live amazing adventures through the eyes of brave heroes! Like the legendary wise wizard, Patricia will be your guide!
