Synopsis
Noemy has always felt different but she didn’t understand how different she was until she is confronted by a world she never knew she was a part of, let alone crowned the Forbidden Goddess.
Topez has lived a life of duty. Working only to serve his people of Ruella, his dreams of becoming the Head of GPP leads him right to the woman who was made specifically for him… but she has a target on her back as the Forbidden Goddess.
Will Topez be able to fulfill his life mission of becoming the Head of GPP while also being able to save the other half of his soul? Can Noemy deal with the fact that her entire life has been a lie and embrace the woman she has now come to know? Or will she allow the pressures of a new life to cause her untimely end?
Asha
Ruella, Egypt - The Hidden City in the Clouds
I glanced around the table at the council as they continued to shout and deliberate on whether we would take over the earth. I would assume taking over the earth would be an open and shut case we had no reason to be concerned with anyone other than our own people of Egypt. Slowly standing to my feet I brushed my hands down the front of dress to remove any wrinkles. I cleared my throat causing all voices to cease followed by looks of confusion in my direction.
“Is this really a discussion? What did the people on earth do to us? Why create an unnecessary war when we already know the outcome?” I questioned before taking my seat once more.
I waited a moment to say another word because I wanted them to think about what they were suggesting we do truly. What had those innocent people done to us? It almost made me question who we were all becoming. I remembered when I was a young girl; all we wanted was peace and love. Nothing more, unless we were actually threatened. We only had our people of Egypt to be concerned with, which was the way it should be. The rest of the world and their problems were not ours to solve. Initially, when Ra became head of the council, there were a few concerns. But ultimately, I felt we had placed our people’s well beings in the right hands. Since the moment he married Serafina, his views had become different, unlike our people’s ways.
“My Ra, what does she know about the outcome? The last time I checked, her power isn’t to tell the future. Who’s to say they will not soon plan attacks on our people? You see the many wars they create and the advancements they have now made. It is only a matter of time, my love, before it all takes a turn in our direction,” Serafina announced, standing to her feet as she looked over her shoulder snidely at me.
With her little speech, all the other council members began to whisper to one another, causing another disagreement to break out on this topic at hand. I had never seen the council this divided in the many centuries that I had lived in Ruella.
With a raise of Ra’s hand, all talk ceased. “I have heard enough. I agree with Asha at this current moment; they do not give enough cause for war. Once that time comes, we will decide on what we shall do with them then. You may all go home to your loved ones,” he announced, standing to his feet as he looked over in my direction to nod his head.
I smiled as I bowed my head back in his direction. The moment my eyes lifted, I could see the pure hatred of me shining in Serafina’s eyes. Choosing not to entertain her a moment longer, I left the temple. Making my way down the stairs, I rushed to make my way home. I didn’t have far to go because being a part of the council provided me with certain luxuries. My home sat on the edge of Ruella, surrounded by clouds and the beautiful night sky. This was one thing I would never tire of seeing when I came home nor the beauty that laid in wait for me. Walking through the front door, I practically floated to the back. As Melli, my housekeeper, turned toward me with my beautiful daughter smiling brightly. Any time I saw her smile, it brightened my day. Noemy was everything I dreamed of when I dreamed of starting a family.
“You’re fine to go for the day, Melli,” I announced as Noemy flew into my arms.
Walking with her over to the lone chair that sat next to her bed, I took a seat as she climbed into my lap, and I began to rock her. It always amazed me how intently she would stare back at me like she knew all of my worries for the day. It was almost as if she placed calming energy over me the minute our skin touched. Leaning down, I placed a soft kiss on her forehead. Eyes still staring into mine, I watched as a smile came across her face.
“Would you like to hear the story of our people?” I asked as she nodded her head in response.
“If I tell you a story, you have to go to sleep, Emy,” I responded with a smile.
She nodded her head quickly in response, and I smiled as I placed her on the bed. It had become our nightly routine since she waited until I got home every night before falling asleep. I waited as she scrambled underneath the sheets.
“Ready, Mama,” she announced in a low tone.
“Remember when I told you the story of our people and how we’re called the Godina People? Well, today, I am going to tell you the story of soul mates and why it is important to our people,” I started.
“Soul mates are one of our most sacred laws of our people. We all have someone who we will always be bound to with our hearts and soul. This story is about a Goddess who fell in love with this young man who shared her same interest. They both liked to paint and to be around family. Not knowing what love was, they decided they would always share that since they would never meet the person they were supposed to be with anyway. Not while being stuck here in Ruella. Everything was going just as they planned. All until it wasn’t, and they ended up welcoming a beautiful little girl. But because they were not supposed to be together, it was forbidden for anyone to make a child with someone who was not your soulmate. The child had to become a secret to her people; no one could know that she was born out of this type of union.”
“Why, Mama?” She asked in her cute little voice.
“Because both the parents would be stripped of their powers, including the child,” I responded.
I watched as her hair started to turn a deep black color, almost blue, and her eyes changed colors. I had seen her powers start to flare out this way anytime her emotions got the best of her. Placing my hand on top of hers, I continued with the story as the sounds of a storm could be heard outside of her bedroom window.
“But because the little girl was so special, her parents did everything they could to keep
her identity secret. Once she was older, she would soon be able to go out and find her soulmate to stop the vicious cycle her parents had started,” I continued as the sounds of the storm calmed down outside.
When I heard loud pounding at the front door, standing to my feet, I placed my hand up to my lip to signal for her to stay quiet. Clicking the secret compartment by her bedroom, the wall shut behind me as my eyes started to turn an ivory color, gearing up to protect my daughter at all costs. I took a deep breath in as I began to seek outside to see who was on the other end, only to feel the familiar energy of someone I would never expect to be at my door. I pulled the door open only to see a cape covered figure on the other side. Coming inside, Ra removed his hood as soon as the door closed behind him.
“What are you doing here? Where is Serafina?” I asked, looking behind.
I closed my eyes once more to seek outside of myself to make sure I didn’t miss Serafina’s energy.
“No, I am alone, Asha. It is urgent. You and Noemy have to leave now, or you will both be killed!” he exclaimed, pacing back and forth.
I was lost for words. I could do nothing but stand there in silence until I found my voice again to speak.
“What do you mean? I thought we were safe once you had become in charge,” I responded frantically.
“You were until tonight; Serafina has found out about Noemy. I am unsure of how she has acquired this information, but she has let me know as my true soulmate, she has the power to rid this world of both you and Noemy if you do not leave at this moment and never come back.”
For a moment, all I could see were the movements of his lips as he told me the only place I knew had to be forgotten. I knew the words he was speaking were true because once you found your true soulmate, in return, all of your old partners could be killed if she wanted it to be that way. I had never experienced the love of a true soulmate, but I knew from my parents before they passed on that they could be very jealous.
“We don’t have time for this! You have to get her and go now,” he stated again in a rushed tone.
Nodding my head quickly, he turned to leave my home. Turning on my heels, my mind ran a mile a minute as I tried to figure out where I would take my child. Where would we live? We were not regular humans but goddesses. Rushing into our kitchen, I waved my hand to reveal a secret compartment. My parents had always known this day would come and told me when to get the contents from this compartment. I had never gone into it with the thought that we would be protected now that things had changed. Quickly reaching in, there were two bottles, keys, and a map. Deciding not to look too deeply into exactly what it was until I knew I was safe, I rushed to open the back wall. Grabbing Noemy from her bed, I rushed out of the back entrance connected to her room. No one knew of this exit, not even Ra.
I continued to follow the tunnel all the way until I was overlooking clouds and the edge of Ruella. I looked behind me to get one more glance at the one place that had been my life. The place that had made me who I was. Turning back toward the edge, I closed my eyes as I recited the words that would allow me onto the earth.
“Tume Norambe,” I whispered, stepping from the ledge with Noemy in my arms.
Opening my eyes, I glanced around as horns blared and tires screeched against the asphalt, knocking me out of my shock. Running to the opposite side of the road, I watched as the human male stuck his hand out of the window, yelling obscenities. Pulling the papers my parents had left behind for me out of my pack, I looked them over to see it was an address, and the keys were to a home here on earth. I pulled out the map to where I needed to go. Closing my eyes once more, I placed my hand over our destination on the map. Opening my eyes, we were standing in front of a one-story home that looked as if it had seen better days. Finally rousing from my shoulder, I watched as Emy slid down my body, staring at the house in confusion.
“Mama, where are we?” she asked.
“Home,” I responded as I took her small hand into mine.
Walking into the house, it was filled with furniture, but cobwebs adorned everything. Glancing around, I almost jumped out of my skin as a small animal ran across the floor in front of us. Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath in as I cleared the whole house of anything that should not be there. Once I opened my eyes again, the entire house was spotless. Wiggling her hand loose from my hand, I watched as Noemy took off running toward the rooms in the back of the house.
Finally able to take a moment to breathe, I picked up my pack to look over everything I had grabbed from the compartment. In the process of placing the two containers I had taken from the compartment onto the counter an old letter fell. I hadn’t seen this until this exact moment. Unfolding the old letter, I immediately recognized my father’s handwriting, which brought tears to my eyes. I didn’t realize until this moment just how much I missed my parents. My mother had gotten sick, and when she died, my father chose to follow her. He felt as if he was no longer needed, and I told him it was okay to go. Bringing my hand up to my cheek, I was getting ready to dry my face when I felt a soft breeze clear my face of all tears followed by a soothing cool breeze that washed over me, slowing down the erratic beating of my heart. I glanced up from my letter to stare at the beautiful face of my daughter. I smiled as she climbed up into my lap, laying her head onto my shoulder. I returned my attention to the letter.
Daughter,
I knew the moment would come when this letter would be needed. You know I always had the gift of foresight, and I couldn’t leave my daughter & granddaughter without the knowledge you needed. Yes, I knew you were pregnant the day I left, but when you gave me the okay to go, I knew you would need this letter. My granddaughter is special. She is destined to do great things for Ruella, to change the way things are running there. But she is not ready yet to face the truth of our people. In the emergency compartment, I left behind the key to your safety. There are two vials; give them to her. They will help to hold her powers at bay so she will appear normal around the humans, and the other vial will help conceal both you and her from our people. I know you’re wondering how I acquired something like this, but I knew what I had to do was necessary for your safety. I love you, and in twenty years, you’re going to meet a stranger from our homeland. His name is Topez. Understand that you need him to succeed in your journey!
-Love Dad
Folding the letter back up, I held it to my heart briefly before crumbling it. Waving my hand in front of the fireplace, I threw the letter into the fire. I knew no one could see those words my father had left behind. I glanced over at my smiling daughter as I picked up both vials, understanding that from this moment, our past lives would no longer be allowed to exist. Well, at least for the next twenty years, but I would do anything to keep my daughter safe.
Present Day
The steady movements and sounds that resounded throughout the hospital always calmed me yet made my heart skip a beat at the same time because I knew at any moment, I would be in the position to save someone’s life. It made being around all of these snobby ass people worth it. Holding my clipboard against my chest, I continued to follow the rest of the students. It was only a day before the last day of my residency at Palmetto Health Hospital. Walking into one of our usual patients’ rooms, the head doctor turned his attention toward me.
“Ms. Ruella, please demonstrate that you know the proper way to take the patient’s vitals,” he stated.
Nodding my head in understanding, I walked over to the side of the hospital bed, smiling down at the chocolate little girl with two sloppy pigtails coming down each side of her head. Stepping around Doctor Stevens, I grabbed the stethoscope as I proceeded to perform each task perfectly while still making our patient feel comfortable once I was done with my task at hand. I looked up to see he had a smile of acceptance on his face. Patting my lower back, he stepped around me as I moved a little until his hands were no longer caressing my back.
“Now that is how it is done,” he stated with a smirk.
I glanced around the room to see everyone agreed, all until my eyes fell on Amber, who I knew couldn’t stand me. I could never understand what her problem was with me. It wasn’t as if I asked the head doctor to call me out. Shit, if it were up to me, I wish he wouldn’t. Any time he did call me up to the front, he found ways to touch me inappropriately. I had thought about bringing it up to the board on multiple occasions but figured since the class would be ending soon, I should leave it alone. It wouldn’t help my reputation to be known as the woman who would go straight to the board, at least not without speaking up for myself. I told myself every day I would, but it became the next day’s problem in my eyes each day.
Moving back to the other side of the bed, I wrote down a few notes on my clipboard. Filing out of the room, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked up into a set of brown eyes as I took in the scowl on Amber’s face. I rolled my eyes as I braced myself for whatever she planned to say.
“Good job. Maybe let someone else get a little bit of the shine next time. You’re not the only person who’s going to be a great doctor,” she stated, stepping around me.
I closed my eyes, taking a moment to get my thoughts together before I snatched that nappy ass weave Amber persisted in wearing every day. When the lights in the hospital went out, sending the hallways into pitch-black darkness, the sounds of the many people panicking could be heard through the darkness. I opened my eyes as all the lights flickered back on, almost as if the backup generator had kicked in.
“Oh wow, it must be a storm outside. Well, good thing we have backup generators here,” Doctor Stevens announced, turning around to face us.
