Dawn of a Legend Page 42

by R K Lander

Within the Inner Circle, General Huren made plans should the Silvans close the Forest, and the lord councillors of the king’s court sat talking of the shameful council, of the vote the king had vetoed and whether he had been right to do so.

But the Alpine warriors and teachers, craftsmen and musicians, the farriers and the bakers, the people lifted their faces into the strange night and listened to the talking drums of Ea Uaré, and they asked themselves . . .

  What have our leaders done?

And still, the Silvans beat their drums, clapped their hands, thumped their chests, and stomped their feet into the night, a night that would always be remembered as the Night of a Thousand Drums.

Their subjugation had come to an end. Their debasement and their humiliation would vanish into a shameful past. The Great Forest Belt was the home of the Silvans, and all that was left to do was reinstate their own Ruling Council and then bring forth the Silvan warlord to defend the Forest from their enemies, whoever they may be.

They did not need Alpine lords. They did not want them.

  They were no longer welcome.
