“Henry always beats me.” A dark-haired tomboy of a girl with hair that looked like it needed a good brush ran up panting. “Auntie Thea, it’s not fair.”
I leaned over to her. “He won’t beat you to the crown though, will he? First rules, right?” I winked.
My niece, Gwendolyn, looked thoughtful, sticking her tongue in her cheek. “Unless I decide to rule jointly with him, so that I can travel like you do. Though my friends say it’s ‘girls rule and boys drool’.”
“Well, there’s plenty of time for you to decide, given that you are only eight years old, and I don’t think your mother and I are planning on going anywhere any time soon.” I rubbed the top of her head as my sister approached.
Mercy stepped forward and hugged me. “Long time no see, Sister.”
“Indeed. I see you have been busy again in my absence.” I pointed to her once more rounding belly. “Is five children not enough?”
She smiled. “No, though I think this shall be the last one.”
Aaron walked over and with the way he still looked at his wife-nine years after marrying her in a joint ceremony with Billy and I-I wasn’t sure Mercy was right.
“Brother.” Aaron hugged Billy, clapping him on the back. “Come, let’s grab a drink and let the women chatter.”
“Still a pig, I see?” I shouted after him.
Aaron just laughed.
“Go on then.” I said to my own husband. “You may as well rest now, because in a week we’re expected at the Spring Court.”
He didn’t know yet that I was lying, and that we would be staying in Andlusan for some time with our family, while I prepared for the birth of our firstborn. We had been trying for a long, long while and I couldn’t believe it was finally happening for us.
“You wear me out, wife.” Billy grumbled good-naturedly.
“As does mine, but I’m not sure we are talking about the same thing.” Aaron quipped.
I guffawed with laughter. Things had changed for us all on return to Andlusan, but some things were exactly the same. Family and our love for each other. The most important things in the world.
