“Be careful, Kingsley.”
“I will. I’ll…” He fell silent. “Holy crap.”
“What is it?
“Oak. Shit. By the look on his face, he thinks I’m behind all this. He’s suited up and ready for battle, and I think that he’s aiming to kill me.”
Epilogue
In the silence that followed, Harley sat staring blankly at the walls of confinement. Oak would kill Kingsley. Of that she was certain.
And The General of Fall; was he prepared to kill his own sons in order to gain omnipotent control over the entire realm.
She thought of the twins and their mother and it suddenly seemed all too clear.
The General had assassinated the royal family of Fall and had taken over, putting The Kingdom under military rule; his rule.
The Dean, as smart and worldly as she was, had been duped by him.
“I have to get out of here,” she said. There was too much to do for her to just sit there and wait for some knight in shining armor to come save her.
She had her own armor. She knew she had the ability to save herself.
And she had to. There was no time to wait.
She suddenly thought of her mother. As The General of Spring, she would head her army. Despite her title as Queen, she took the role of general to heart.
Harley looked out the small broken window and saw her sword in the hands of a lieutenant. She was like her mother; a warrior princess. She was strong and capable… and fierce.
Her mother would never sit back and wait.
“And neither will I.”
The soldiers guarding her were suddenly distracted by the fighting going on around them. Harley hurried to take advantage of this and squeezed through the small opening.
Once outside, she was stunned. For all the walking behind the carriage, then the rattling around inside it, she hadn’t realized just how far they had travelled.
Now, she looked around and recognized the rolling hills of The Kingdom of Spring, only now those beautiful rolling hills were stained with blood and littered with bodies; the bodies of soldiers wearing the colors of every kingdom in the realm.
Her heart jumped to her throat as she thought of the people she loved. Was Kingsley among the dead? Oak? The twins? Even her brother?
And what of her mother? Could she have already given her life to this senseless battle?
Then she saw them in the distant. Oak and Kingsley were alive, but for how long? They were fighting. Even from a distance Harley could see how restrained they both were. It was clear that they were both reluctant to truly maim or kill the other, yet both determined to win all the same.
From the left, a horse rode through and a regal woman, dressed in military garb and wearing the Spring crest on her chest, pulled the reins stopping the horse just short of where The General of Fall stood.
In an instant, she wielded her sword and fought The General who simply sneered as he fought her back. The Queen staggered back, and The General continued to push forward, every swing of his sword sending her back a few paces.
She tripped and fell to her back and The General offered her a triumphant laugh as he raised his sword high into the air.
Harley ran out to them. “No!” she shouted.
But before she could reach them, a vice grip took a hold of her arm and pulled her back.
“Let me go,” she said, certain it was a soldier. But when she turned around, she gasped. “No.”
The Dark Fae Wizard held her, his rotted breath taking the place of the fresh air.
“No!” she shouted trying to break free.
“Don’t fight, little girl,” he said with a chuckle. “Do not fear me, little one.”
He was uncomfortably familiar with her, as if he knew her. As if he’d always known her.
“Who are you?” she said, looking into his red eyes. “What do you want with me?”
“Steven,” he said. “The name is Steven.”
Steven? Harley thought. Wizard Steven? It didn’t sound right.
“I’ve come to claim you, Harley, Princess of Spring. I’ve come to claim you for the Dark Realms.”
His red eyes flared and burned like hot ambers. He picked her up.
“No!” she screamed, kicking and slapping at him. “No! Help! The Dark Fae! Please, help! He’s taking me!”
As Harley had thought, The General of Fall, his sword still held high, stopped to look, as did The Queen of Spring. The General, fearful of losing his pawn, left The Queen and approached them.
The Queen also approached them, her eyes wide with confusion and disbelief.
“Steven?” she whispered.
Harley looked at The Queen then back at the Dark Wizard. No, she thought. It couldn’t be.
“Steven,” The Queen said. “Is that you?”
The Dark Wizard sneered and shifted Harley’s weight to get a better hold of her.
“I thought you had died,” The Queen said.
“I guess a part of me did,” Steven said.
“What are you doing? Where are you going with our daughter?”
Harley almost fainted on hearing the words. It couldn’t be. This beast of a man could not possibly be her father. She looked up at him, and the ugly disfigured features. Despite it all, she noticed a slight resemblance; the mouth, the lips, the chin. Though transformed by the ugliness that enveloped him, the resemblance was there.
Sickened, Harley gagged as she shook her head.
“Why are you doing this to me?” she whispered. “Where are you taking me?”
“The Dark Realms, my little one. With you by my side, the Dark Realms will completely rule all of the Faery Realms.” He sneered. “Through you, my lovely, we will spread the darkness over the entire human realm. We shall control it all.”
