  Introduction

  Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;

Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see

A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings,

And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings.

In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song

Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong

To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outside

And hymns in the cozy parlor, the tinkling piano our guide.

So now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamor

With the great black piano appassionato. The glamour

Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast

Down in the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past.

  Prologue: Coronation Day

  Earth.

  After the Second Fall.

  Location: Unknown

My name is Rae, and they took everything from me…

“Slide it in.” He grinned, salivating heavily at the mouth. “Deeper, yes… so fucking deep.”

Darkness enveloped her sanity like a warm blanket. Cavernous caresses from hypodermic needles tore through her arms, keeping her asleep. Again, she was forced into slumber, forced to lie in cold and dormant sleep until the time was right to wake her again. The darkest horrors allowed her no form of comfort. As Rae dreamt, her demons awakened. And somehow, she was used to their tormented ways.

She had been fighting all her life—fighting to hold on, fighting for some ounce of freedom and liberty, fighting to survive. Fighting for the men who took her and left her alone again to fend for herself. There were no truths found. There was only darkness, isolation, and the inevitability of her capture and death.

“Vash… Killian… Lucas…” Heavy pain ran through her veins. A fog that refused to lift enveloped her mind. “Where are my men?”

“Your men will not be coming back.”

A man shrouded in darkness hastily rolled a cigarette, licking the edges gently. He lit up and breathed in deeply. Tobacco spilled onto the floor, and his eyes burned a dark shade of red. The man’s name was Severin, the newly appointed minister of propaganda of the new republic. A tall and sinister snake of a man, he watched over her with elongated eyes. Now, she was trapped deep within his coiling tail, even kept away from her twin sister, Ruby. He’d kept her near him, only providing her nourishment when necessary. He forced her to understand everything she was taught in the old world meant nothing now. Her destiny was to not only lose herself, but her family as well.

She was a captive. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Manly hands carried her body, speeding her through a darkened hallway. “Hurry. We do not have much time,” he urged.

Addressing new faces, horrible faces, faces with eyes that glowed in the dark and teeth that clicked in rapid succession, Severin muttered, “Everyone is waiting. Place her inside the center of the machine, like so.”

Months upon months stacked against each other, rolling into nothingness, into one moment she couldn’t twist away from. It always did seem like every time she twisted away, she fell back into another web of insanity. Severin claimed they had constructed a new world, but it was exactly like the old one. The only difference was how they conducted their torture.

Now that the reconstruction had come, Severin prepared her daily for the next steps. He told her of his plan to broadcast her image across the globe. She’d be his little star. With her voluptuous body and hourglass hips, she was already the most beautiful icon Severin had ever come across, but he promised her he wouldn’t use her for sexual pleasure. According to him, she had another purpose.

That’s what he told her, night after night, breathing deep into her ear like a hungry worm searching for the core of the bright-red-and-glowing apple. Still, he left out plenty of details to surprise her.

His eyes burned severely. Every time she saw him, she felt the pain of her children sear through her empty womb. All she wanted was for this to end, to find some semblance of peace. She thought of her alphas patiently waiting for her. Despite her circumstances, she tried not to laugh. They sure as hell weren’t waiting patiently. If she knew them like she thought she did, they were frothing at the mouth, desperate as her to come together as four again.

And despite the pain Severin forced her to feel, she couldn’t stop the heat emanating from between her legs. Nor could she stop the soft flow of dewy wetness from dribbling between her pussy lips. She needed her strong and possessive alphas, not this ungrateful, imbecilic puny man.

Severin lowered his voice, presumably so that she would take his next words seriously. “Look around you, dear.”

Reality came rushing back. She took in the terrifying sights in the same way she took the drugs from the needles. Numb, numb, numb. There were hundreds of alphas gathered to watch. Their eyes lit up, as sti
rring as candles in a cold, dark desert. “Who are these people?”

“They are your audience,” he muttered. “You may not realize it yet, but you’ve been asleep for quite some time. So much of the world has been waiting for your reawakening, and now the time has come to show them that you’re ready.”

She took a deep breath, but the air seemed to sting her lungs. “Ready? F-F-For what? What could they possibly want to witness?”

Severin’s lips twitched eagerly. “Well, of course, they want to see the show, my dear,” he said through a tight chuckle. “You are ready to lead, are you not?”

Rae’s eyes dropped and scanned what housed her. She had been set in a subterranean auditorium, body held inside her own glass casing. A pod. Another capsule to rest in. “The show...? But you despise me. I can’t lead anyone.”

“Dear Rae. Remember what I told you so many times before? It’s not about what you can do. A martyr needs an audience,” he said.

A man next to the minister giggled maniacally. “Open her up. I want to see how hollow the bitch really is.”

But Severin would not kill her. Not yet. The public wanted a story they could rally around. Although Rae was the perfect martyr for the new regime, she was aware that if he killed her too fast, the public might descend into chaos again. For all regimes were built on glass castles. Severin had a lot of planning to do, and he was counting his cards wisely, stacking them as need be. But the walls could shatter at any moment.

As she stretched and tested her limits, her tits stretched back and appeared as two perfectly sculpted orbs. The men inched toward her to see a better sight. Soft and subtle, her body had adapted to the effects of childbirth quite well. The wideness of her hips was an alpha’s only weakness. The mother… There was something about the idea that brought on a certain type obsession or hunger in an alpha.

She was now more than a piece of flesh or candy to suck on, and perhaps that gave her some level of agency. On the other hand, she was the one still trapped.

The herd of slobbering alphas shared the same hungry expression. Their eyes rolled into tired slits, and they extended their tongues as if she were near enough to taste. Every glance they sent her way traced her body until she absolutely knew that whatever this gathering ceremony was about, it was going to change her life forever.

“Back, you mutts,” Severin said, standing above them on a round metal podium. “I will not let you bleed her.”

Blood. Since my beginning, there has been the problem of blood. Blood weighs the body down. It allows for the mind to wander. Of all things, blood seems to be our downfall.

He stomped his heel to crush the men’s hollering. “She is ours to protect.”

Lies. Although he never touched her, Rae was convinced Severin was as completely untrustworthy as Cassian. In fact, she couldn’t trust anyone anymore, so as time passed, she kept her thoughts inward and waited until she could have a say.

The chattering noise of teeth and tongues from around the room echoed and tickled her ear canal. She hated hearing the noise of their unearthly excitement. Obsessive lust was one thing, but some alphas’ expressions were on another level. She fought to extend her body forward, but it was of no use. She was stuck. Glancing down, she noticed two pipes opened into the glass sphere she was resting in. Above, the top closed, latching her inside for good.

No. Not again. No more sleep.

She couldn’t stand the days passing as seconds, the years turning into fleeting moments. She jerked forward again, to no avail.

Giggling, Severin stepped down and adjusted the front hem of his uniform. “There, there. It’s alright.”.

Her senses were not sharp, but she was slowly starting to understand what he might do to her. They were going to flood the glass sphere with water. They were going to drown her, and everyone in the world would be her witness.

  “Let me go, at once!”

More alphas laughed with the minister. Some pounded their fists against the metal interior of the room, while others held onto the rafters like wild and deranged animals. They were the old leaders, and they couldn’t hold back their savagery. The habits ran through their veins. “Shut the fuck up and perform, darling!”

Reaching into the front pocket of his uniform, Severin lurched forward and pulled out a thin tarot card. It had to have been hundreds of years old. Without glancing at the artistic design, he threw slid it inside an opening underneath her writhing body. It floated into the small puddle of water, floating closer to her toes. When she gazed down, she could easily see the design. It was the Six of Swords. Inverted.

“A wonderful card. If you examine the artwork closely, a woman and her child are being towed across the waters in search of new land.” He paced the room as a king might wander his courtyard. “Customarily, this card represents change and safe harbor. How fitting it is to your situation.”

“W-What? Please, tell me what is going on…”

Severin sighed and wrung his hands. “Unfortunately, the card is inverted. It appears your travels have led you to utter ruin and disaster. Yes… loss has been etched into your name.”

Low chuckles of pure disgust and hatred echoed near her open legs. Men encompassed her. Suddenly, the lights above her cut through the darkness of her new prison, blinding and hot. She felt the glass reflect against her pale skin. Taking in what sights of horror she could process, she blinked to focus her eyes, but as the flood of images turned clearer, she realized they were waiting for her to panic. It made them all the more satisfied to see her writhe and kick with no result.

Her twin, Ruby, had lied to her. She’d stolen her children, imprisoned her alphas, and killed her dreams of starting a family. Now, they would ruin her for a lifetime.

“Indulge in the fantastic sight of her tears, everyone. We all love a good victim,” he said. “So, gather around. Feed on her tears.”

“I want to talk to her,” she murmured, voice growing with strain and vocal fry. “I want to talk to that cunt sister of mine!”

“Shh... Quiet, now.” Severin held up a finger. “We don’t want to ruin the broadcast too much, do we? The people must know that you’re safe. We saved you from his clutches.”

Rae gave up and obeyed the man. “But-But I don’t understand. I am not safe! My sister… she was supposed to let me live! She was supposed to give me my children back…”

She thought of Cassian and all the harm he did to her. Her father, her maker, her tormentor ruined her in the worst way by giving her something supposedly wonderful: life. Severin had made his intent abundantly clear. This was a show for the public to feel better for the sins of the past. Severin would tell the world they saved her life, and surely, she’d then be sent away, back to the darkness whence she came.

“And yet, they are her children now.” Severin’s eyes darted back toward the cameras that surrounded the subterranean platform. “The future can be fabricated. Edit that portion out,” he said.

Voice tight, facing the heavens, she uttered, “Father, what is the point of bringing me all this pain? No one listens. Nobody changes. Everyone is so horrible to one another that love seems nonexistent. It shatters my heart.”

“On second thought, this is all so good,” Severin said to himself. “We can edit this down properly.”

She shifted her eyes back to her new captor, growling as an alpha might. Severin giggled and walked toward her, stuffing the remaining cards back into his pocket. He hastened forward, sure to extend the look of pleasure across his lips. He did not blink against the sudden light, but he was a different breed of punisher.

When a man searches for truth in an atom bomb, he extracts a piece of himself from inside it.

Soldiers. There wasn’t anyone left who hadn’t fought in the wars against the coalition of the New Republic. In this region, even some women fought. Of course, that didn’t mean they got all of the same rights as the alphas. No—only some omegas qualified to be leaders. Betas were another story. Her sister was one of those be
tas, and it was only because she had been bought by Severin through Cassian so long ago that she had any right to power.

It was the same piece-of-shit world as before. Only, now she had to start from scratch. She wasn’t sure her mind could handle it.

“You’re pathetic,” Rae said, spitting against the glass. “A pathetic little man who couldn’t have children of his own. A beta, a—”

“An omega as precious as you would be wise to shut her lips. One might decide to split them open,” Severin said.

In what appeared to be an attempt to save face, Severin came closer to her and lowered himself to his knees. He was old—much too old for her. Everyone in the building must have known that. Besides, he had an omega he could fuck whenever he felt the mild urge take over, and without the annoyance of sharing with a whole pack of alphas. Her sister was his whore. If only he cared…

He opened the center of the sphere, reaching inside to make sure she was latched in place. His frail palms felt like crumpled paper against her thighs. Quietly, he spread her apart and breathed in the musky air that hung against the atmosphere of her bottom bliss. All for effect. All to make her writhe and scream. All to make him appear as the alpha he wasn’t.

“Ah,” he exhaled, nose twitching abruptly. “You are ovulating again.”

Rae jerked her arms back, but every movement served against her needs. Thick cables of military grade fastened her to the glass like a Chinese finger trap. She was taken in more and more by her struggle. Eventually, she grew tired. All it did was reveal her weakness to the audience of sex-crazed men.
