One-handed, he opened the box and revealed the most beautiful diamond solitaire ring set with royal blue sapphires on the sides.
I sucked in a breath. “That’s gorgeous. But it kind of looks like an engagement ring.”
His dark eyes held more emotions than I could name. “That’s because it is.”
Sugar plums. “Are you—” But I knew the answer. He was. My heart thumped in my chest like it might break free.
Still holding my hand and the ring box, he got down on one knee. “Will you marry me, Jayne Frost?”
I wanted to say yes. I wanted to yell it so loud the nurses came running. But Sin needed to see the other half of my life. He needed to understand that at some point, I would be moving back to the North Pole to take my rightful place on the Winter Throne. He needed a chance to back out, no matter how much I hoped he wouldn’t take it.
“It’s the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen.” I smiled, hoping that would make the rest of what I had to say a little easier to take. “I just can’t answer you yet.”
He got to his feet. “If you need some time, I understand. I know we’ve only been involved since right before Halloween, so maybe this feels sudden to you, but I know how I feel. Those feelings aren’t going to change. But if you want some time, I’m good with that.”
I shook my head slowly. “It’s not that. It’s…my life in the North Pole. My responsibilities there. I need you to see all that and really understand it and to be okay with it.”
“I’m sure I would—”
“No, Sin. It’s not something you can guess at. You need to experience it for yourself.”
He nodded. “So we need to go to the North Pole. As soon as possible.”
“As soon as possible. I promise.” I might even ask Uncle Kris to come get us on the sleigh, because I finally had a resolution for the New Year.
Get that ring on my finger as fast as I could.
