  En route to Paris

  Nov. 30, 1918

  Dear Charles,

I’ve finished my book and shipped it off to publishers. My mad English friend Nina says I need a change of scene and I want to see what Europe is like now that the war is over, so we’re off to Paris. We hope to reach Italy before the weather gets bad, then back to England next year some time.

I’ll try to write you. Look out for my stories!

  And don’t forget me.

  Alma

I felt I had lost her all over again.

  Charles,

I will be arriving at Portland, Maine on a hospital ship due to depart tomorrow. Expect to be back in Arkham shortly after landing; will notify you by telegram.

Ask Mrs. Fisk to get my house ready.

  Herbert.
