A sense of peace fell over him, and he gasped at the wonder of it as he held her. “I’m quite willing to give you whatever else you desire.”
“There is one thing.” She tipped her head back and caught his gaze. Mischief and wicked intent danced in her eyes. “You can give me a daughter... if I’m not too old to bear another child.”
Dear Lord. Cecil dropped a swift kiss to her lips. To know what it would feel like to hold a baby—his child—in his arms left him shaking with awe. “Perhaps I’ll make inroads on that promise tonight once Simon is abed...”
“Now that makes today a happy Christmas indeed.”
Cecil rested his chin against her hair and simply held her for long moments. “We should go tell our son the good news. I’ve promised him a ride in the sleigh in any event.”
“You’re a good man, Cecil. I thank God every day you showed up on my doorstep and that we have this second chance.”
“As do I.” He kissed her cheek and ushered her back to the modified carriage, where she slipped his jacket over her shoulders.
Life had the power to send a man tip over tail into a new direction if he was open to change and accepting of who he was. Love helped soften the jagged edges, and he had that in spades.
