Looking down at the sleeping woman, Suros could feel his body stir in response. By everything that was holy, he was going to get back home tonight with his bride and lay her down in his bed where she belonged.
It was night when they emerged from the surrounding forest and saw the first signs of Tige. The collective groan of relief from the soldiers wordlessly described the rigorous pace their King set for the remainder of their journey. Walking through the large gate, sentry soldiers greeted the party quietly while the taking keen, curious note of the sleeping bunny woman nestled to the King’s back.
Bowing each man smiled and kissed their new Queens hand as she sleepily thanked them for the safe journey. Ushered away by some of the older women who kept and maintained the castle Ishtar was scrubbed and bathed before she was escorted to the King’s bed chambers. Dressed in a fine silk sleeping gown, Ishtar turned to the sound of Suros entering the room. No longer in his fine black armor, Suros wore only a pair of simple white cotton pants leaving his sculpted torso bare for her eyes’ enjoyment.
With gentle strength, Suros lifted her and laid her on the bed. Pulling at the ties of her gown he paused when she cradled his face in her hands.
Giving him a searching look. “Will we be happy my Lord?”
Understanding her anxious fear, he nuzzled her neck, receiving a small sigh of pleasure in reply. Dipping his tongue to her tender collarbone, he whispered in her ear. “Yes, my little Queen. I promise to keep you safe and happy until the end of time.”
Epilogue:
Pacing the long hallway Suros strained to hear what was going on inside the room. Ishtar’s screams still rang throughout his head, haunting him. Three sons, Ishtar had given him three sons with three different births with absolutely no issue.
This one was different.
The demon midwife had come running out telling him she had finally delivered the babies after the last shattering scream, but Ishtar was still bleeding. As if sensing his needed presence, Suros turned to see his half-brother suddenly appearing from the shadows of the long hallway. Once at his side, Decimus immediately took over. Decimus was what humans referred to as a physician and what demons referred to as a sorcerer. There was nothing Decimus did not know.
The door at the end of the hall slowly opened, and a small white-haired head poked out. Two familiar red eyes gave him a worried stare, silently seeking answers.
“Go back inside Orpheus.” It was his oldest son, a spitting image of himself and just as obstinate.
The red eyes narrowed in reluctance. It was expected, Suros mentally sighed, the child absolutely and unequivocally loved his mother the most out of the two.
“Inside Orpheus,” he commanded again, before adding softly. “I promise you she will be fine.”
Eyes softening back to worry the young wolf nodded before softly shutting the door. Bracing one arm against the wall Suros dug his claws into the stone wall. She had to be okay because he couldn’t imagine his life if she wasn’t.
The doors to the room eventually opened. Decimus stood there for a moment giving him an unreadable look before smirking. “She is fine now, come in.”
Rushing past him into the candlelit room Suros stopped near her bed. Leaning down he pressed his forehead to her damp one and listened to her beautiful breathing. “My love,” he whispered, his voice thick with relief.
She was exhausted and sleepy. “Suros,” she whispered opening her eyes against sleep, giving him a tired look. “My babies?” The desperate plea in her voice reminded him of the child.
Frowning he straightened and turned to find Decimus. With his back towards Suros in a darkened corner of the room, Suros heard Decimus’s dark echoing laugh.
“Oh yes, little brother you heard correctly. Babies as in two.” Still, with his back to him, Decimus began to rock stiffly from side to side.
Suros never questioned his brother’s demented humor, being half hell hound everything about Decimus was warped. Still only too relieved at Ishtar’s recovery Suros opened his mouth to question about the infants when Decimus turned around stealing Suros’s breath.
Shock froze him to the spot as Decimus came closer. Smiling wider at the younger wolf’s reaction Decimus’s sharp toothy smile grew until it reached ear-to-ear, unhinged and wide. Handing the stiff father, the soft tiny infants Decimus laughed as Suros continued to stare at the infants in his arms in shock.
“When you’re raising my two lovely nieces I hope you remember your own tenacity in pursuing Ishtar as your Queen.” The dark laugh seemed to fill up the room as Decimus stepped back into the shadows.
Staring down into his full arms Suros stared in a mixture of shock and awe at the two baby girls in his arms. White velvety fur covered their sweet tiny bodies while two tiny golden-brown floppy ears lay flat against their heads. Two tiny bunnies just like their mother yawned and squirmed in his arms.
“I believe,” the large toothy smile floated from the shadows detached and wide. “The humans call this karma little brother.” Laughing darkly the hell hound faded into the darkness.
