“Why don’t you go ahead and get in the back?” Susan asked. “I have a lot of equipment piled on the front seat.”
Audrey almost made a comment about her playing limo driver, but then she gave a mental shrug and told herself to go with it. Susan got in behind the wheel, and Audrey opened the rear door and slid into the back seat, then fastened her seatbelt.
Susan started the engine. Before she began to back out of the parking space, however, the rear passenger door opened, and a tall man in a black suit got in. For just the barest second — probably because of the suit — Audrey thought it was Michael, and irritation began to flare.
But then the man turned toward her, and she realized she was looking at the face of a stranger. Or rather, Audrey thought she didn’t recognize him…at first. Then she focused on the deep-set dark eyes, the thick black bars of brows, the thin mouth and long nose. She’d seen that face before, staring mournfully at the kitchen window of Michael’s house, gazing down at her from her own upstairs bedroom.
The man in the back seat was Jeffrey Whitcomb, the late owner of Whitcomb mansion.
