Young Captain Nemo: The Door into the Deep Page 19

  But what would they say?

“So,” Dad finally said, spreading his arms. “What do you think?”

Ms. Kosydar looked at Peter, who was saying so much yes with his eyes that he was practically shining. “But what are you actually going to build?”

“Here?” Gabriel’s mom looked up at the unbuilt tower with the sun shining through the bare metal columns. “Oh, I think you’ll be amazed.”

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

A lot went into the creation of Young Captain Nemo. I had a very simple goal to start with: I wanted to create the kind of story I would have loved as a young person, full of hints and Easter eggs that made the experience worthwhile. Throughout the book, you’ll find references to real things like the Eastern Pacific Garbage Patch, which is a nightmare we really do need to solve, and real organizations like the US Navy, NASA, and NOAA, as well as references to bits of lore from Jules Verne. For instance, the island base that the Nemos use is referred to here and shows up in the book The Mysterious Island. There are more hidden treasures, but it’s more fun not to tell.

I’d like to thank the incredible talent and support of my agent, Moe Ferrara, who shows incredible patience while whipping manuscripts into shape, and my editor, Holly West at Feiwel and Friends, who gamely shepherded this project through its completion. I’m forever in your debt. A lot of this book is pure, unadulterated fantasy, and some is error. Whatever I got wrong is absolutely my own fault. Finally, I’d like to thank my wife, Julia, for her extreme patience, and my daughters, Katarina and Sophia, for inspiring me to create more stories for them. They make me want to be better at every turn.

See you soon, because Gabriel Nemo will return.
