Chapter 11
All four of them were flooded with adrenaline, not sure what to do even though they had made a plan. It was just that the opening was so wide that if Culler did come up behind them, they had no chance. But the decision was made for them. All of a sudden, Quinn saw Culler hurrying toward them, the AK held tightly in his hands. He was wearing a black backpack filled with ammunition. The moment he saw them, he raised the gun, but Quinn also raised his rifle. When Culler saw that, he dove behind a tree, one so large that he could shoot from behind it by merely leaning slightly to one side or the other. Quinn fired and hit that tree, but as he was reloading Culler let out a burst of at least twenty-five bullets. They ripped up the ground and foliage, drilling big holes into trees, but not penetrating the trunks the four of them had taken shelter behind.
It was an old-fashioned gunfight, but the four of them were completely pinned. They could do nothing but hide behind the big trees and hope the bullets would not penetrate. Every thirty seconds or so Quinn would move left or right and shoot at the madman’s position, but Culler was crafty, staying out of harm’s way. In his rush, Quinn had only grabbed half a dozen rifle bullets and was soon down to one. After that it was a handgun versus an assault rifle. Not good odds. If Quinn failed to end it with that his last rifle cartridge, they were goners.
Then a shot rang out and they heard a groan. Looking back, Quinn could see Culler lying dead on the ground, his hands still wrapped around the machine gun. Behind him, holding a handgun, was Chief Barnes with some policemen not far behind. Two of them went over to ensure that Culler is indeed dead. One moved the gun away while the other gave an all-clear hand signal.
Ali and Elle were in tears as they hugged each other. Quinn moved forward and hugged Ali from the back, kissing her head, while Derek hugged Elle. Derek then gave Quinn a good pat on the shoulder and hugged him.
“It’s over. It’s finally over. We are free now!” Ali choked back tears of relief as she fell into Quinn’s strong arms.
“I love you,” Quinn said, touching Ali’s face with the backs of his fingers. He held her as if his world depended on it. “God, I love you!”
“I love you,” she returned, passionately kissing him. “I want to live, Quinn. I want to live my life with you.”
“And I do not ever want to lose you. Marry me, Ali Miller.”
“Yes,” she said, crying and holding him. “A thousand times yes!”
The four of them laughed as they walked toward Chief Barnes. A crowd of onlookers had started to gather. Other than having the mystery of the serial killing solved, this might just be the most sensational incident that had rocked the little town of Hidden Grove and would most certainly be the talk of the town for a long time to come.
