  CHAPTER EIGHT

After checking his status, he couldn't help but notice the 3/100 behind his class title. However, when confronting the system about it, no information was delivered. Instead, the system remained quiet and simply left Wilhelm to be in a more confused state.

"Sigh, I suppose the system is not omnipotent after all," he grumbled to himself whilst shrugging his shoulders and looking for human tracks. He wasn't fearful of the night, this was especially so since he now possessed the 'night-eye' skill.

Thus, after a few moments of putting his past training to use, he discovered some of their tracks within the grassy plain. The grass was slightly lowered on a certain path compared to the rest, so he followed it for around half an hour until he laid his eyes on the smoke rising into the air.

It was partially discernible from a distance, however, with his night-eye skill, he could see it more vividly than a normal human. Albeit, it wasn't too considerable of a difference. Wilhelm comforted himself by thinking that his first skill would be quite weak in comparison to his future abilities. At the very least, that was how most games worked.

Unfortunately, however, he presumed his class to be somewhat gloomy, as it buried dead bodies and was more efficient during the night. Though, this was to be expected when selecting a class termed 'undertaker'. As such, he stopped thinking about such unnecessary thoughts and continued walking in the direction of the smoke.

He couldn't care less if he was spotted by fellow humans, as he was in dire need of water. Although some of his thirst had been quenched by the lake laced with some sort of flammable material, he hadn't drunk anything in around twelve hours. An amount of time that no living mammal wanted to go through without water.

Wilhelm was a trained man with many stat points allocated in certain areas, granting him the strength not obtainable by a normal human. Yet, his bodily needs were still present. In fact, he felt as though his hunger was a much more prominent characteristic as of late.

Thinking to here, he soon arrived just a few dozen meters away from the assortment of fires that he could bear witness to from a distance. The flames stuck out a sore thumb during the night and surely attracted quite a large number of insects and other monsters. He could also faintly see plenty of tents set up in the camp and quite a few men standing guard, wielding things like large sticks or rocks.

'Were they perhaps sent to the holy land together?' Wilhelm thought to himself after observing the abnormally large number of people in the camp. If they were sent alone, there was no possible way for them to have made a camp of this magnitude in the short amount of time they had been here.

After a few simple deductions, Wilhelm decided to patiently wait outside the camp for a little while longer. He was quite aware of his strange appearance and didn't expect anyone to treat him very kindly.

Then, as Wilhelm was just beginning to regret choosing the undertaker class more and more, a few people exited the camp and walked in his relative direction. They were a group of six and owned somewhat small statures.

Even from a distance, Wilhelm could easily discern they weren't muscular and carried small weapons. Using his night-eye skill, which caused the surroundings to appear green, similar to night-vision on earth, he was capable of deducing that it was a group of three men and three women.

Seeing this, Wilhelm subtly moved his body to the left and walked a few meters to the side. The ground that was blanketed by tall grass and pine leaves camouflaged his figure. This caused the group of six, unbeknownst to even themselves, passed right by him.

From a closer distance, they appeared to be from varying Asian countries. More peculiar was that even when walking through the dark, their expressions were devoid of fear. Piqued, Wilhelm quietly followed behind the group of six. He felt that it was quite rare for a human to be so calm in their current circumstance, so he was curious as to what they were up to.

The group of six traveled through the grassy meadow without any blunders or stops. Once they reached the vast and expansive forest, they finally halted their footsteps and started to circle the forest, careful as to not enter it.

They continued like this for another quarter of an hour before stopping dead in their tracks. Surprisingly, they stopped exactly where Wilhelm had buried both the innocent boy and the blonde man he had murdered.

One of the women, with an oval-shaped face, Pheonix eyes, and thin, pink lips took a few steps forward. Her wavy, black hair flowed behind her shoulders and her waist swayed provocatively as she moved.

She was a beauty, but her actions contrasted with her appearance. She dug her hands into the ground where Wilhelm had buried the two men and pulled out their bodies after much difficulty. Without care for dirtying her clothes, or face, she continued scrutinizing the corpses.

After deep examination, anger filled the face of the woman as she abruptly stood up from the ground, "this man killed Banri, and then something, no, someone, murdered Alex, ruthlessly," she spoke in a slightly perceivable accent, just audible enough for Wilhelm to hear from a distance.

The group of five frowned in response to the lady's words, "do you think there is another group of humans nearby?" one of the men asked whilst raising his glasses. He had short black hair and ordinary features, vastly different from the ornate looking woman.

"I highly doubt it. Judging by what that fairy had told us, this world should be much larger and more dangerous than earth, and since only 1% of humanity was sent, there shouldn't be another group nearby," the beautiful woman replied while using her index finger to periodically tap her chin.

"A sole human?" one of the others asked in shock, to which the woman nodded her head with a strange smile. She surveyed the surroundings and looked down at the flattened grass before squinting her eyes.

"Yes, a human that I presume is nearby…" she spoke with a higher octave than normal, causing Wilhelm to inwardly applaud her quick deduction. He admired intelligence, and the woman in front of him fully showcased that aspect.

Wilhelm deliberated about whether or not to show himself for a few awkward moments before shrugging his shoulders and standing up. Judging by their earlier reaction, they seemed to acquaintances with the boy that Alex killed. Therefore, he didn't think that they were immoral people. And even if they were evil, Wilhelm was confident that he could either escape or kill all of them.

His rising figure that moved the nearby brush alerted the group of six. They silently gazed at each other through the dead of night for a few small junctures. An eerie wind coursed through the nearby terrain, fluttering their clothes and hair.

It was quite dark, so the group of six couldn't vividly identify Wilhelm's features. But, they could deduce that he was a very tall and thin man with long hair. Thus, the beau
tiful woman, without fear, walked towards Wilhelm until she was only a few feet away.

Upon closer look, she possessed a beauty spot just below her lower lip, which accentuated her beauty. Fortunately, Wilhelm was no stranger to beauties. In fact, he had seen plenty back on earth, so he was not stunned in the slightest. From his experience, the prettier, the more dangerous.

While he was thinking of this, the woman was also stunned by his abnormal look. His unblemished pale skin and piercing green eyes were startling. Yet, his long and ungroomed beard seemed extremely out of place. Almost influencing the woman to want to walk up and shave the beard off right then and there.

Unfortunately, her emotions were not shown on her face as she simply opened her thin lips, "did you kill that man?" she inquired while pointing towards Alex's lifeless body laying on the ground.

Her question caused Wilhelm to jestfully tap his chin with a wry smile before nodding his head, "that would be correct, " he said with a strange gaze, "I caught sight of him brutally murdering an innocent boy, so I decided to personally act," he continued with a smirk while imposing his long and slender hand forward.

"My name is Wilhelm, nice to meet you."

  CHAPTER NINE

The beautiful woman stared blankly at Wilhelm's extended hand for a few moments before grasping it with her own and shaking it. Although she didn't fully trust him, she didn't feel that he had any ill intentions. Hence, a friendship would be in both of their interests.

Seeing that her reaction was as he expected, a small smile formed on his lips, "your name, is?" he asked a with a tilt of his head. He disliked speaking to people that he didn't know the name of, especially so for women.

"My name is Anastasia, however, please refer to me as Anna," she said politely and gently pulled her hand away from Wilhelm. Contrary to her looks, her name wasn't of Asian origins. Perhaps, she was born in America, Wilhelm quickly deduced and also pulled his hand back.

After they exchanged a few more formalities, Anna surveyed their surroundings, "is your group nearby? Or perhaps, have they fallen to the beasts of this world?" she asked curiously. According to her knowledge, humans were transported in relatively large groups.

"Unfortunately, the fairy must have had a slip of hand when transporting me. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been transported alone" Wilhelm said with a chuckle as he gazed at the large moon in the sky. He was quite happy that he had finally found some people that he could converse with.

Not knowing of his inner thoughts, Anna simply nodded whilst looking at him incredulously, "I won't ask of you anything personal, as that would be overreaching my bounds as a friend. However, I am quite curious as to how you have survived alone until now."

Her words trailed off as her group of five allies, or friends approached. They carried expressions of scorn and disgust as they observed Wilhelm's filthy clothes and beard. They felt as though someone of his caliber was not worthy of shaking hands with their esteemed Anna.

Seeing this, Wilhelm merely chuckled and didn't bother to answer Anna's previous question, "is your group of people in possession of water? If so, I would gladly join you" he said monotonously without sparing a glance to the group of five rude folks.

Anna was first taken aback, but soon seized ahold of herself and nodded her head energetically, like a woodpecker, "Someone of your expertise would be greatly appreciated, please follow me!" she said quickly and led the way back to her encampment, to which Wilhelm followed silently.

He walked shoulder to shoulder with her and the other five could only grind their teeth angrily as they followed behind them. This caused Wilhelm to snicker, "Anna, what type of monsters have you come across thus far" he initiated small talk as they walked, but he was also intrigued as to what other monsters were present.

Anna didn't mind his abrupt question and answered without much thought, "we've only been released to the wild for about a day or so, however, we've come across tribal races such goblins and strange feathered creatures that walk on two legs," she explained.

Her words caused Wilhelm to stroke his scraggly beard, "I've come across an assortment of beasts myself, such as oversized rabbits, flame monkeys, giant spiders, colossal wolves, and a cyclops," he spoke whilst tapping his chin as if trying to recollect his memories.

Before she could even respond, he chuckled, "it would appear that just like earth, there are many different creatures dependant on the environment… Perhaps, the more intelligent creatures reside in this savannah," he muttered and patted Anna on the back.

Anna nodded her head at Wilhelm's words and they continued on their way to her encampment. They didn't talk much more whilst walking, but he could certainly hear the gnashing of teeth from behind him.

This was something to be expected as he was most definitely considered an outsider. nonetheless, he was in dire need of water and other necessary supplies. Besides, even if they detested him, they would not be able to deny his special set of skills.

Still, he was quite intrigued as to why their reaction to him murdering someone was so monotone. He figured that they had been through their fair share of dangerous events on the holy land. But, that still was not enough to become so apathetic toward human death.

Thinking to here, both he and the company arrived at the encampment. Large tents were already set and crude looking fences surrounded them. Many weak-looking guards holding robust sticks stood there as guardians for their pitiful looking village.

Such a sight nearly caused Wilhelm to burst out in laughter, but he held himself back with much effort. Instead, he praised the encampment whilst Anna led him through the gates. They looked at him with curiosity, but it would appear as though Anna was quite respected in the small village. Thus, they didn't pay him much mind, other than a simple glance.

The group of five closely followed in tow as Anna led Wilhelm through the village. Their actions were excessive and even an insider would likely feel that they were abnormally obsessive. However, as if their current actions didn't bother Anna in the slightest, she continued showing Wilhelm around.

They passed by a ragged looking shack where they stored the food, a white and open tent where they treated the injured, and, of course, the residential tents which varied in size. They appeared to have been pitched by someone well-versed in survival skills.

Surprisingly, however, there weren't many people roaming the encampment. In contrast, they seemed to be resting in their tents or guarding the outskirts. Subsequently, their little sight-seeing trip ended without many mishaps and they soon arrived in front of the middle-most tent inside of the encampment.

Two muscular guards stood in front of the entrance and glared at Wilhelm as he approached. In response, Anna simply waved her hands and both of them fearfully gulped down a mouthful of saliva and looked elsewhere.

"You seemed to have tamed them well... " Wilhelm commented from the side and pushed the drapes aside, entering into the spacious tent. Once he entered, he immediately inspected his surroundings and couldn't help but smile cheekily once he perceived what was inside.

A few dozen barrels and flasks of water littered the walls and even some more advanced weapons, such as knives or spears were present. This was presumably their "treasury" which in comparison to earth, was quite lackluster.

However, to the ravenous and thirsty Wilhelm, he couldn't think of a much better sight as he took a few steps forward and directly removed the lid off one of the barrels. He then entered into the barrel with his head and spontaneously drank a few mouthfuls of water.

Immediately, a burning sensation assaulted his throat and mouth, causing him to fall back and collapse on to the ground. His body spasmed for a few moments before he raised his upper body whilst massaging his neck and breathing heavily.

"You monster!" He said sarcastically whilst glancing at Anna with a wronged look. It didn't burn as much as the lake he had discovered prior, but it was certainly not the refreshing taste he had envisioned.

  Anna merely chuckled in deligh
t after seeing his pitiful appearance, "I simply told you that there was water, whether or not that water was palatable on the other hand, was not something you asked of me" she replied jestfully and exited the tent with a sway of her hips.

Wilhelm, who was still on the ground, rolled his eyes and subtly grabbed a small knife that was on a nearby table. He figured it was the least they could do for tricking him into this place full of obsessive beauty worshipers.

He then exited the tent and followed Anna, who was now a fair distance away from him. They continued walking in a similar fashion for about five minutes until she stopped in front of a small tent riddled with holes. It was possibly the worst one that he had seen yet. And, it was due to this that a dark premonition overtook him.
