Myrna Page 21

by Vandam, Vivian

A cool breeze passed over her, "I haven't had a good day since you left me…you were going to show me the world…I even listen to your favorite music, drinking our favorite wine. Every night I see you in my dreams and we're flying in the air holding hands."

She closed her eyes, gritting her teeth against the scream that was at the base of her throat. "I keep telling myself every day that I'm alright and I'll be okay. But God damn it I can't. I just can't. Waking up with you gone has been hell…it's so hard to function." Mina gripped his dog tags, "How the hell am I going to love someone else when you're the only one I've ever loved? You kept me sane when I had nothing else. I trusted you, and only you." She turned her head and pressed her burning forehead against the cool stone.

"Remember the night before I went into the Scarlet Corp? We made love, and you held me so tight like you were going to lose me, you treated me like I was a flower…" She watched the flash of bright blood, and hearing Ace scream. "That night was the most magical night of my life. You gave me the push to fight with the good guys." His face flashed before her eyes with his bright blue eyes and bright smile.

Her throat tightened, and she finally let the grief consume her. Myrna dropped the dog tags on her chest and wrapped her arms around the headstone. Her tears flowed like water over her face. "No one knows how much I miss you…" She breathed hard as a hard sob came from her chest. "Why…? Why didn't you just let Agatha attack me?! You knew I wasn't like you! I could've survived! I could've…I could've…"

  Myrna screamed.

"I can't do this! I can't keep living with your memory! You swore that you would always protect me, no matter what! That night, you asked me to marry you…and I couldn’t give you an answer…" She gripped the sides of the headstone.

She wailed, "My answer is yes…my answer was always yes.” As she laid her head against the cool stone, the soft rustle of wings made her look up. A cardinal sat on the limestone, tilting its head at her. It jumped from the headstone to her shoulder, rubbing its head against her face.

When she looked from the cardinal to the roadway where her car was, a tall figure stood there with robin egg blue eyes and a boyish smile. He gave her a light wave. It took a moment for her to catch her breath, he was coming down the long walkway wearing a black suit. He had a bouquet of flowers, and he locked eyes with her.

For a moment she believed she was seeing Ace.

The man came forward and the bird took flight from her shoulder, she still had tears on her face. “W... who are you? No one else knows where Ace is buried.” She was too tired to fight it, too tired to even try.

The man stopped next to her and laid the flowers on the gravesite. “I’m Doran Wilder, Ace’s younger brother.” He knelt, next to her and gave her his hand, “You must be Myrna.” Again, that boyish smile brought life to his eyes.

  “It’s nice to meet you.”

For the first time in almost two years, Myrna’s heart didn’t ache. She reached out and took his hand, gently shaking it. “Yeah...nice to meet you too…”

He gave her a wink, “Come on Supergirl, let's get you some food.”

  “How…?”

Doran nodded to the cardinal, “A little birdie came and found me.”

  Carnival of Rust

Taking a step back, my back bumped into a solid mass. I froze; sweet cotton candy smell washed over my body.
