Ominous Order: A Young Adult Post-Apocalyptic Dystopian Series (The Separation Trilogy Book 3) Page 29

“Me either.” Her ice blue eyes flick up at me. “The situation isn’t the best, and our losses is something I wish we never needed to endure. But I’m happy I’m still here to have you.” She breaks away from me sooner than I’m ready to let her go. “Now, the Trade will be after me and who knows who else when they find out I’m still alive. Without each other, we’ll be left with everyone else, and that wouldn’t be enough for me.”

She looks back to her palms, clearly fascinated by the change. I watch her as she stands, walks to the edge of the building, and looks out at the ruined city of Highrum.

I have no idea what our future has in store for us. The what’s next of our story, but I know I don’t want to go through it without her. If that means running at her side or having her back, I want to fight every Zombie, every alien, every Normal, and every government official that has us in their sights. I want to change the world with her.

  Chapter Thirty-Three

I stand on the roof of the Guidance headquarters, surveying the impact the Vojin’s invasion had on Highrum. What the Vojin didn’t destroy, the Zombies do now. This new world will bring on new adventures and obstacles. We’ll meet new people and lose them along the way as we fight to stay alive and rebuild a foundation that will preserve life and reestablish stability for our country. Maybe I’ll survive. Maybe I won’t. Maybe more will find out about the gifts of an Itteix. Or a diverse Creation, like myself. Maybe they’ll hunt me, and maybe I’ll run. Maybe I’ll fight…

It’s not the many maybes or possibilities that matter. It’s the simple fact that possibilities exist. That a future lies before me that I thought wouldn’t. That I have my own will, and I can choose what I want my future to become. So I am going to take this opportunity to live the life I was destined to live. Without restrictions on what and who I am. On what or if I can feel.

I look over my shoulder at Marc and wave him toward me. When he makes it by my side, I take his hand. The scar across his palm changes the smoothness of it. Death wasn’t sweet. It didn’t welcome me to join Luke or my parents. It was dark. It pained me from the tip of my toes to the ends of my hair, an experience I never want to endure again.

The city is a wasteland, but on the buildings still standing tall, people rise, Normals and Creations together, fists raised. Atop the building across from us, Jord stands next to Seits, right fists raised to the sky. Amber and Jesail are with them. I smile, tears clouding my eyes.

Raising my fist, the cheer cuts from my throat.

Excitement erupts from my friends, and Normals and Creations jump with joy on the roofs and yell from raised windows on still intact buildings. Their hoots and chants are like a song playing throughout the city. A joy in the America I’ve never heard.

  We did it.

I lift my gaze to the sky, watching the falling debris from the Vojin. It was supposed to be me who flew up there and gave up my life to save us. To save this world. But Sean loved his brother more than he loved himself. I squeeze Marc’s hand. “Sean gave up his life for us to be together. He didn’t have to do that.”

Marc clears his throat and says, “A few days ago, maybe he wouldn’t have. But he must have seen something in us that was worth saving.” His purple gaze peers into mine. “You willing to find out what that is with me?”

I nod. “Until the end of time.”

Nearly one hundred years ago, the America experienced a destruction that shook the Earth’s core. This destruction was caused by aliens, the Vojin, who brought me up to believe they were good, that they had the world and its citizens’ best interests at heart. But we were wrong. The Vojin plotted against us in preparation for their greatest feat.

What they didn’t know was that there was something more powerful than them. That something wanted peace and freedom more than they desired captivity.

We, the Creations of the America, rose above their annihilation. We, the Itteix, driven by our feelings of contentment and love, rose above what they said we cannot acquire.

Seanabe Thanatos gave his life, not only to save the world, but for me, for his brother, and for anyone who may come after us.

He gave up his future so we could have one. So his end could become our new beginning.

  The Separation Trilogy

  Acknowledgments

Thank you so much for reading the Separation Trilogy. I hope you enjoyed Kylie’s story as much as I enjoyed writing it. This was a genre binder that mixed a few of my favorite science fiction genres, and I wanted to take the risk of combining them. And boy oh boy was it an adventure that I enjoyed every second of. (Except for the days when I was up until 3am with writer’s block.) Thanks for taking this journey with me! There is a lot more I want to share about this world and Itteix, and I hope to connect with you in future books. If you’d like to stay connected, sign up for my newsletter where I share all my news and updates. Please consider leaving a review or rating on amazon. Thanks in advance for your support!
