Before the Crow Page 46

“Connell, are you okay?” the priest asked, but cursed as a large soldier, donned in the silver and green of the Silver Guard pushed in.

El’bryliz sat up straight in the chair as Tanea appeared through the door next, her eyes instantly locking on him. Several other soldiers appeared through the door, coming between the priest and the cleric.

“Release him, now!” Tanea said angrily.

“You do not give orders here, menace,” the elder priest snarled. He leapt forward, the shiny dagger sliding out of his heavy sleeve.

The big soldier chopped down, catching the older man’s arm hard, knocking him to the ground while jarring loose the weapon at the same time. He brought a boot down, pinning the priest to the ground.

“So what, are you her protectors? Here to fight her battles for her?” Father Pallum spat angrily.

The big soldier laughed and simply shook his head as another man, incredibly short and wide of shoulder pushed through the crowd.

“If you’d seen what ee just saw out there, you’d be glad to just be dealing t’with us,” the short man said with a crooked smile.

Tanea came forward and unstrapped the bindings on El’bryliz’s arms and legs, before hooking an arm around him and helping him up.

“You shouldn’t have come. Too dangerous,” he grunted. Yet he felt an undeniable amount of joy seeing her again.

“I brought help,” she said, holding up his hand and examining the blood-soaked bandage. “I just wish I could have gotten here sooner.”

“What are we going to do about him?” El’bryliz said, motioning to Father Pallum.

Tanea met his gaze, an undeniable fire simmering in her hazel eyes. “We have bigger problems to deal with right now.”
