Chapter 1
It was the same dream. It took place at an old abandoned cabin and the trees surrounding the building were dark and bleak and looked like spiky hands reaching out to grab her. She would find herself running towards the cabin which would get farther and farther away each time she got nearer. She hugged the little girl close to her and tried to keep her quiet. She could hear his heavy footsteps behind them and knew he was catching up to them. He was going to take her away if she did not outrun him but she found herself getting weaker and weaker still.
As soon as he came near to them that was when she would wake up with a scream trapped inside her throat. Christopher’s eyes opened as soon as she jumped up and he caught hold of her when she made to get off the bed. Each time she had the dream and woke up she would jump up and race into their daughter’s bedroom to make sure she was still there.
“You have to stop doing that baby,” his voice was husky with sleep and he pulled her reluctant body back against his.
She had been having the nightmare for a month now and he had suggested that she see someone about it and she had refused; now he would have to insist. Sophia curled her hands on his bare chest and was reassured by the strong steady beat of his heart against her cheek. He stroked her back gently, the soothing rhythm causing her heart to stop the erratic pounding.
She sank into his arms and fell into a dreamless sleep.

The breakfast table was a rush of conversation and clatter of plates as usual. The three year old twins: Christopher Junior and Christian had more cereal on the ground than what they had put into their mouths and six year old Christine had a smudge of maple syrup on her brand new school uniform. They always tried to eat breakfast together as a family because having dinner together was often times iffy because of their busy schedules, Christopher and Sophia made the effort to have breakfast with the kids.
“Mommy look what I made!” Christian pointed to the heart he had made out of his cereal on the top of his high chair. Christopher Junior was pouring milk from his bowl onto the top of his high chair.
Sophia stood there looking at what was her family around the table. Her husband was cutting up Christine’s pancake as he did each time she had the meal, even though Sophia told him she was old enough to do it herself and the twins who had turned three in December. Her family and she had no idea how she had gotten so lucky.
It was getting late and the bus would be by shortly to pick up Christine. “Christine you need to get cleaned up and get your backpack honey, you are running late and boys you are making a mess.” She had just finished drinking her coffee and had gone into the kitchen to get some more and had come back to the chaos.
The helper had already arrived and the nannies in charge of the boys were upstairs tidying their rooms and the playroom to get them started for the day. By the time they had kissed the children goodbye and hand them over to the nannies they too were running late.
The January morning was bleak and the clouds heavy giving the indication that there was going to be snow at some point during the day. Christopher did not allow her to take her car unless he had an early meeting and he had to go in before her.
“Are we going to talk about last night?” he asked her lightly as he negotiated his way through the traffic on Main Street. He had driven the BMW this morning and Sophia leaned back against the padded leather seat, her eyes closed as she breathed in the soft leather smell of the interior.
“I am not going to talk to anyone else about it Christopher,” she told him stubbornly, not looking at him. “It will go away eventually.”
“And in the meantime I am expected to just ignore the fact that my wife is anxious and having nightmares?” his voice had turned cool and had her glancing at him. He spared her a look and turned back to the road. They had reached the high rise building that housed Tang Holdings and he pulled the car to a stop, his eyes straight in front of him. He was aware that the guard from downstairs had sprung to attention as soon as he had seen the car pull up but he ignored him.
“I guess I am just anxious because I have no idea what’s going on with Jeremy,” Sophia told him softly, taking a peek at his rigid jaw. “I keep waiting for him to show up and demand that he wants to see Christine.”
His hands clenched on the steering wheel and he felt the helpless rage go through him. He had not done his usual check since he had heard that Matthews had ran away with his mother in law and that Merrick had had a heart attack when he had come back and heard the news. He had not told her about it until several months after and she had stared at him in shock. He had wanted to shield her from the ugliness that involved the man who had gotten her pregnant all those years ago and had left her to go through it all by herself.
“You have no need to worry about Matthews,” he said finally, turning to look at her, his expression inscrutable. She hated when he was like this and when she had no idea what he was thinking.
“I wish I could order my mind to accept that,” she said with a sho
rt laugh.
“You need to,” and with that he opened the door and got out, coming around to her side to help her out. He pulled the soft dark blue cashmere coat closer to her. “I will deal with him.”

“You have the board meeting in ten minutes Christopher,” Tiffany looked up as soon as he came in. If she noticed the remote expression on his face she gave no indication. “You also have the meeting with the people from the pharmaceutical company at nine thirty.”
“Cancel it and get Marcus on the line for me.” He told her coolly without breaking stride. “Tell the board members to go on without me.”
“Will do,” she did not bat an eye as she picked up the phone to make the call.
Christopher picked up the phone and greeted the man briefly. “I have not heard anything about Matthews for a long time. I want to know where he is and what he has been up to and Marcus I want to know everything.”
“Yes boss,” the man said respectfully.
Christopher settled back into the chair and looked across the room broodingly. He had spent years not thinking about the man whom he had shipped off to Australia in order to get him away from his wife. Not that he had any fear that she would run back into his arms because he knew she was in love with him but he had not wanted him to be hanging around and wanting to try to see Christine. She was his daughter and there was no doubt about that. He was not going to let him come between his family.

Sophia was finding it hard to concentrate. She had been having the dreams for the past month and the first time they started she had not wanted to tell him but they had made a vow to each other to talk about everything and she had reluctantly told him about the dreams she had been having. Jeremy had gotten her pregnant and had told her that he wanted nothing to do with the child. She had met Christopher when she had been assigned to work at Tang Holdings for a period and he had pursued her and convinced even though she had found it hard to believe that a man like Christopher Tang could ever love her but he had proven to her that he did and over the years he had shown her in so many different ways.
Four years ago she had been anxious about giving him a son and after being so anxious and wondering if she ever would; she had ended up being pregnant with twins. She did not believe in the perfect life because of the way her life had been before she met Christopher and was constantly waiting for something bad to happen. She had to admit that when she had found out that Jeremy had gotten married and had a son she had been vastly relieved but now Christopher had told her that Jeremy had run off with his mother in law. What kind of sick twisted mess had he gotten himself into? She had wondered to herself. She knew her husband did not like her to mention his name but the fact remains that he had been her first and she still cared about what happened to him.
“You look pensive,” she had been so deep in thought that she had not heard her assistant come in.
Amelia had been with her ever since Christopher had put her in charge of acquisitions and the girl had been a big help. She had since gotten married last September to Devon in accounts and still had the fresh glow of newlywed on her attractive face.
“Just thinking about the shopping mall.” She said lightly, forcing thoughts of Jeremy from her mind. She had a job to do and she had gotten very good at it. “I must confess that I am eager to put this to the board and get their approval. I think it would be quite a coup for the company.”
“You know your husband is going to want to check everything before agreeing to anything.”Amelia told her wryly. She had somewhat gotten used to Christopher’s brusque and cool manner even though she still jumped a little when he came into the offices unannounced.
“I know,” Sophia said with a small smile. “So let’s get a jump on it and check it out ourselves.”
“Good idea.” Amelia said with a grin as she got up ready to leave. “I want to tell you thanks again for throwing us that wedding Sophia. You are the best employer a person could ask for.”
“It was nothing,” she told her with a wave of her hand.
With a smile Amelia left the office, closing the door softly behind her.
Sophia twirled the pen between her fingers, her expression thoughtful. Life was good to her. She had a wonderful husband and three of the most amazingly beautiful kids one could ever hope for. She had come from being a woman confused and pregnant with no prospects to one who had come up in the world. There was no need for her to think that anything was going to rock the boat.

Sybil kneaded the dough and put it aside. Matthew would be home from work soon and she wanted to have dinner ready by the time he came home. She had left the bookstore at six on the dot because she wanted to come and prepare something for him. Today was his birthday and he had told her he wanted to spend the time with her and not make a fuss about it. “Besides it is only going to remind me of how old I am getting.” He had told her with a smile.
She had baked him a cake and put vanilla icing on it with strawberries on top, his favorite. They had been married for three years now and she could not believe that they were so happy together. It had been touch and go for a bit because when she had first met him he had been married and his wife had been ill of the mind.
She remembered the stolen moments, the guilt and doubts and the time he had stopped seeing her when his wife had died. She had been so much in love with her first husband, Sophia’s father that she had never thought it possible to love another but she had met Matthew and he had lit a fire inside her that had warmed her lonely heart. She was glad for the second chance. She had seen the love her daughter and son in law shared and had been humbled by it.
Her head lifted as she heard the door turned in the lock. She quickly took the apron off and patted her neat chignon and went into the large homely living room to meet him.
“Hi lovely lady,” he quickly hung up his jacket and took her into his arms for a tight hug. “I smell something delicious cooking.” He kissed her softly on the lips and eased her back to look at her. “Are we going somewhere?”
“We are celebrating your birthday by having dinner right here,” she told him framing his dear face with her hands. “I want you to go and freshen up and come and have a seat around the table. I have a lot planned for tonight.”
“I am eager to find out what it is.” He kissed her again and then headed to the bedroom. Sybil watched him go with a smile on her face and then headed back to the kitchen.

“It’s okay Maria, I will finish up in here thank you.” Sophia said from the doorway of the large bathroom that belonged to the boys. They were already in the bath with their rubber ducks and were covered all over in suds.
“Mommy look what I have!” Christopher Junior lifted his hand and showed her a chewed up blue and white duck.
“Hi Mommy,” Christian greeted her with his usual gentle smile as he set his duck on top of the water. Her husband had gone in to talk to Christine before coming in to look on his sons.
She had wanted to talk to him and find out what, if anything, he had found out about Jeremy but she had not dared. He had not called her or come around to her office like he usually did and she knew it had something to do with the conversation they had had earlier in the morning.
“What have you done to the poor duck Chris Jnr.?” She asked him as she pulled up the stool and started to pour some water over their heads. Christopher Junior shrieked as the water ran over his face and splashed playfully in the bubbles, drenching her in the process.
She allowed them to play for a few more minutes before letting them get out and drying them off. Christopher Jnr. Resisted at first and then when he saw his brother cooperating he climbed out of the tub.
She had them in matching Winnie the Pooh pajamas and settled in bed before their father came inside the room. “Daddy!” they both chorused as soon as they saw him. His smile came forth as he pulled up a chair and sat between their beds.
Sophia stood there in th
e doorway looking at the three of them and could not help but be amazed at how much they looked alike. The twins had inherited their father’s straight thick black hair, his piercing black eyes and the shape of his face. They were small replicas of him and she often wondered if she and Christine were the odd ones out. With a shake of her head and one last look at them she went into her daughter’s room.
It had been designed by a professional as were all the others but the designer had spent a lot of time and put a lot of thought into it. It was of delicate pink and there were softly drifting clouds on the ceiling. Her bed was on a dais and had delicate white columns going up. There was white tulle material above and on the sides and she looked like a sleeping princess in the soft folds of the sheets. She was already asleep and her wild curls were spread all over the pillows. She had one arm flung to the side and her lips were half opened.
Sophia gently pushed away the hair that had settled on her cheek and bent to kiss her soft skin. She had been hers before she became hers and Christopher’s. She had never belonged to Jeremy, all he had done was plant the seed. He had not even watered it because as soon as he found out she was pregnant he had fled.
Christopher had been the one to make doctors’ appointments with her and to wake up with her during the nights when she cried. He had taken her with another man’s child and had treated her as if he had been the one to plant the seed inside her. Even if she had not loved him for whom he was, then she would have loved him for what he had done for her and for her daughter. She was not going to let Jeremy come in and spoil what they had.
He had given her a life and what a wonderful life. He showed her over and over again what love should be like and she could never love anyone the way she loved him. With a sigh she straightened up some books that were lying around the room and realized that she was going to have to talk to her daughter about picking up for herself.
They were spoiled and grew up with help who did most things for them. She was not used to that and felt strange whenever she saw the helpers doing the cleaning and straightening up. She was not used to people doing the laundry for her or even making her bed. Even after six years she had not gotten used to it.
