“Why do you think I am?” he was having a hard time concentrating on what she was saying because his body was jumping in desire.
“I heard you put up the pharmaceutical company for sale and I know it’s because of me.” She leaned forward and took his hands with hers. “I know we are a long way from getting over this my darling husband but we are going to have to try. I promise you that I will never go anywhere without letting you know first. I also realize that there are dangers around and I have to be careful and I promise you I will be.”
He took a deep breath and reached out his hands to pull her onto his lap. “I am going to be holding you to it.” He told her hoarsely as he took her lips with his in a hungry kiss that had her clinging to him.
Chapter 15
He was planning her birthday party and he wanted it to be a splash! She was going to be thirty on July 2nd and he knew she was dreading reaching the big ‘three O’ as she called it. They were planning on having a cookout at the house for the holiday celebrations which would be on Monday but he wanted to do something for her birthday and he wanted it to be a surprise.
“Do I still look like the woman you married six years ago?” she had asked him that morning as they were getting ready to go to the office.
“Even better,” he had told her coming up behind her to stare at her reflection in the mirror. She had put on a brand new teal blue skirt suit that leaned toward formal but she had teamed it with a soft pink and blue silk scarf around her throat. Her hair was done up into a myriad of curls and she had them up with a red clip on top of her head. She was wearing gold earrings at her lobes and an exquisite gold watch he had given her a few months ago. “You are the most beautiful woman I have ever met and I say that without reservation.”
“You don’t think I am getting old?” her eyes met his anxiously as she ran her fingers over her smooth cheek.
“Fishing for more compliments?” He quirked his eyebrows at her.
“Christopher I am serious!” she retorted, poking him in the ribs.
“I get it, your birthday is coming up and you are wondering if you are going to be required to carry a cane.” He moved away before she could elbow him in the gut.
“Very funny.” She said looking at him darkly. She sat on the vanity stool and pushed her feet into her cranberry colored heels and stood up to get her matching purse.
“You are ageless honey,” he told her seriously. “I find myself looking at you and wondering how on earth you could be a wife and a mother of three kids, it’s not possible.” He had come in front of her to take her into his arms.
“I thank you kind sir,” she looped her hands around his neck. Even in her very high heels she only came to his chin. “That I can live with.”
He kissed her lingeringly on the lips before he went to finish getting ready.

He called Tiffany in his office. “Is everything in place?” he asked the stylishly professional woman as she came in armed with her tablet.
“All the invitations have been sent out and the RSVPs are pouring in. You wanted the theme to be about her accomplishments since she has been at the company so we will have photos enlarged and mounted of the buildings she has been involved with including the one where the celebration will be. You also said she is a little touchy about turning thirty which I can’t see why, the woman looks like a darn teenager.” Tiffany said darkly.
“I wished you would convince her of that.” Christopher told her with a laugh. “I do agree with you.”
“I have thought of a way of going around that by putting up pictures of her from the media. You know they have called her one of the most beautiful black women in business and always photographing her whenever she is out in public and also there will be pics of the kids and you of course.” Tiffany said with a smile.
“Sounds good. How about the cake?”
“A three tier cake of vanilla with chocolate fudge icing. Her mother is making that and a live band for dancing and also the grand finale when you will ask her to marry you again. Then the renewal of vows. Very romantic I must say Christopher.” She said with a beam.
“Thanks I just want her to have something to think about aside from what she has been through with that creep who kidnapped her.” He said darkly. “I want something special for her to wear. She is going to argue and tell me that she has enough clothes to last her a hundred years,” he said with a grin.
“I have already sent to order a Parisian outfit which will be arriving tomorrow. Reservation has been made at Chez Locale´ for that night and then you will just have a drink and I will call you to tell you about an emergency at the hotel. That will be your cue.” Tiffany reeled off the arrangements in her coolly professional voice.
“You have everything under control I see,” Christopher looked at the woman in admiration. “I know this is not in your job description Tiffany so I owe you big.”
“You don’t owe me anything Christopher; you are the best employer a woman could ever hope for.” She was referring to the time she and her husband had been trying to come up with the down payment for their home. He had asked her what was the problem and after a moment’s hesitation she had told him. He had not said anything to her but later that day she had gotten a call from the realtor to say that the sale had gone through. When she had tried to make arrangements to pay him back he had waved it aside and told her: “If you are happy, you are more productive.”
There was nothing she would not do for him and Sophia. “The hotel will be reserved for the night and I was thinking that maybe you and Sophia would like to spend the night in the honeymoon suite. Sybil is willing to go home and supervise the children.”
Christopher looked at her, admiration on his handsome face. “I think you are about due for an increase.” He told her mildly. “Get accounts on it.”
“Thanks Christopher.” Tiffany stood up with a pleased smile.
“Tiffany, I think fifty percent is fair.”
She turned and looked back at him in shock. “Thank you very much!” her professional voice slipped a notch as her excitement shone through. Now she could renovate the kitchen and the front porch.

“Hi baby girl how are you?” Sophia had stopped by the bookstore.
Christopher was in a meeting and he had told her before she left to make sure that Carlos took her and he would be by to pick her up. “No arguments Sophia,” he had told her firmly.
It was Friday afternoon and her birthday would be tomorrow. Christopher had told her that he was taking her out for dinner and although she had told him that she had enough jewelry to open a jewelry store she knew he was going to probably give her something shiny. The man was unstoppable when it came to giving her gifts.
“Mom hi,” her mother was busy wrapping up a purchase for a customer who was still wandering around no doubt looking for something else to buy. The store was fairly full mostly with teenagers milling around the café and chatting, some were actually reading while others were surfing the net. “Need help?”
Sybil handed her the package she had been wrapping as she turned towards the couple who handed her several books to ring up.
“So the big day is tomorrow,” she commented as she turned towards her daughter, watching her efficient hands crease and section off the colorful paper.
“I am going to be thirty Mom can you believe it?” she shook her head and tore off a piece of tape. “I found myself looking in the mirror for any sign of wrinkles.”
Sybil laughed in genuine amusement. “I thought you were not vain.”
“You know I am not but having kids makes you wonder. I look at Christopher and he does not look a day older since the day I met him. I see women looking at him and I know what they are thinking and I want to gouge their eyes out.”
“You are aware that you look like a teenager; don’t you?” her mother asked her dryly taking the neatly wrapped package from her and putting a bow on it. “You have nothing to worry about when i
t comes to that honey. You are beautiful and sophisticated and your husband can look at no one else when you are around.”
“You are right.” Sophia said with a smile as she went to pour them some lemonade from the jug left out for the customers.

“Happy birthday Mommy!” the trio of voices dragged her out of a very pleasant dream of her lying on the beach and Christopher rubbing lotion onto her skin. She opened her eyes to see her children crowded around her and peering down at her.
“I tried to stop them but they insisted,” her husband told her resignedly as he sat on the edge of the bed.
“Thank you my sweets,” she cleared the sleepiness out of her throat and put her arms around them.
“We made you cards,” Christian wiggled out of her arms and held up a gaily decorated card made out of construction paper. There was a drawing of what looked like a woman on the front and the words: ‘Happy birthday mom’ written haphazardly underneath.
“Here is mine!” Christopher Jnr. said not to be outdone. His was red and had the same writing on it and drawing.
“I made a necklace out of beads,” Christine held up the gaily colored necklace.
“Oh my goodness! I am such a fortunate woman,” she exclaimed hugging all three of them.
“Daddy says he is going to give you your present later.” Christine told her.
“I am sure he will,” she looked over at her husband.
“Okay kids give your mother a break and go and get dressed. We are going to the park remember?”
“Yay!” All three of them hopped off the bed and raced from the room.
“And you my sweet beautiful wife who does not look a day over sixteen, have an all day appointment at the spa. Carlos will take you.” He kissed her hard on the mouth cupping her breasts, his fingers passing over her nipples making her lean towards him as her body flamed with desire. He had woke her up very early this morning with his hands all over her body and had made long and lingering love to her.
“Very clever words,” she wrapped her hands around his neck and deepened the kiss. His hands drifted between her legs, nudging her open and touching her mound. He had gotten rid of her panties since early this morning and she was naked beneath her nightgown.
“I have to stop. The door is still open and the kids-“ he groaned as her tongue tangled with his. “Damn!” he swore and dragging himself away from her, he went and closed the doors coming back on the bed to spread her legs and entered her with a force that took her breath away.

“Right this way Mrs. Tang,” the pleasant Swedish girl said leading her into a very large room with a massage table and an easy chair in the corner.
She put on music, Beethoven and the lovely strains of Fidelio filled the room and made her relax and close her eyes with a sigh. The woman’s experienced hands moved over her body with an ease that made her bones feel like liquid. She fell asleep during the experience and was awoken by the gentle tapping of the woman’s hand on her shoulders. She was waxed and exfoliated and her eyebrows tapered. Her nails were buffed and polished and she chose a bold red for a change.
She did not finish until late in the afternoon.
*****
She got home in the afternoon to see her dress laid out on the bed. Christopher and the kids were not home yet and Madge had laid out a fruit plate for in her room.
The dress had her gasping and her hand flying to her throat. It was the most stunning dress she had ever seen. It was plum colored and very light, almost as if it was nonexistent and very short. Sophia held it up against her and saw that it barely came to the middle of her thighs and had a scooped neckline that gave a glimpse of her cleavage. There was also matching strappy sandals.
Her hair had been done as well by a hairdresser at the spa and it was blow dried and wrapped up into a very neat and elegant chignon on top of her head.
He had come home without her knowing it and stood in the doorway watching her. He had left the children outside under the watchful eyes of the guards and the nannies as they ate at the pool. He had wanted to see her and be with her for a little bit. She looked up and saw him through the mirror. He looked so handsome and confident in black T-shirt and black denims that she felt her heartbeat quickened.
“I did not know you guys were back. Where are the kids?” she turned around and put the dress back on the bed.
“At the pool.” He put his hands on her arms and held her a little distance away to look at her. “You are incredibly beautiful!” he breathed.
“You like?” she put one hand on her hip and struck a pose.
“I love,” he murmured. “You like the outfit?”
“I was going to rail at you for buying yet another outfit but I fell in love and the annoyance disappeared.”
“Is that so?” he said in amusement.
“You spoil me,” she said softly putting her hands around his neck and breathing in his scent of sun and expensive aftershave.
“You haven’t seen anything yet,” he breathed against her mouth.
*****
“Isn’t this a little early for dinner?” she was just putting on her lipstick in readiness to leave. He was already dressed in a black suit with tiny red stripes, a red shirt and black and red tie and was achingly handsome. He had not given her a velvet box yet so she supposed he was waiting until they got to the restaurant.
“An early reservation. I want to spent the rest of the night with the birthday girl.” He told her softly.
“That sounds very nice.” She stood up and walked towards him. Her walk! He felt his blood rush to his lower body. The dress was riding up too high, her legs were enticing and he was not going to be the only male there with a pulse. It was a stunningly beautiful dress but it was too revealing, way too revealing, it hugged her generous curves too lovingly and she looked like very hot sex.
“Maybe we should stay home or you put on something else.” He muttered.
“Am I mistaken or weren’t you the one who chose this dress and these totally sexy shoes?” she asked him curiously.
He was probably going to have to demote Tiffany.
“I am keeping you very close to me tonight,” he muttered.
*****
“I am sorry to cut your night short baby but I have to deal with this,” he apologized again as he helped her out of the vehicle in front of the hotel.
A valet came by swiftly and took the keys from him as he took her arm and led her inside. The hotel was one of the trademarks of downtown and had been left to be broken down and had been slated for demolition until Tang Holdings had rescued it and renovated it to its former magnificence. Now it was the main attraction downtown. The door was opened for them and they entered the darkened lobby.
“Is there a convention going on?” Sophia looked around and noticed that there were no guests milling around or staff members.
“I think so,” Christopher’s voice was casual as he led her over to ballroom.
He pushed the doors opened and the loud chorus of ‘Surprise!” had her jumping back against her husband. Someone had hit the light switch. There were hundreds of people in the room! And the décor! There were pictures of her in different outfits, the buildings she had acquired and pictures of her family! Her husband and her children and there were balloons everywhere. She could not believe it.
The room looked amazing and there was a huge banner over one wall that said: ‘Happy birthday to an amazing woman!’ Then suddenly there was a single male voice singing happy birthday. Her eyes widened as she turned and saw international recording artiste Derek Mitchell coming from one corner of the room singing in his sensational voice to her, a smile on his handsome face.
Sophia was overwhelmed and felt the tears gathering in her eyes. She turned to her husband and saw the gentle look on his face. “You did all this for me?” her voice was hoarse with feelings.
Before he could answer their children came running over to them. “Happy birthday Mommy.”
They chorused. “Are you surprised? Daddy said it was a surprise birthday party.” It was Christine in a beautiful pink dress with a long bow tied behind her. The twins looked handsome and smart in dark blue suits and red ties; her family.
“I am sweetie,” she hugged them to her.
She was amazed at the people she saw there. The entire staff at Tang holdings was there, as well as her mother and Matthew, Jeremy and his son and Lauren looking beautiful in a bright blue dress and also Lorna and the guy she was seeing. There were business associates of Christopher’s and a U.S. senator as well. They were all there to celebrate her birthday. Derek Mitchell sang several of his hit songs and had the crowd cheering like crazy.
“You did this?” she looked up at her husband as they waltzed around the dance floor. She was amazed and humbled by all of it and kept looking at the pictures hanging from the ceiling.
“With the very big help of Tiffany,” he told her softly. He had seen the look on her face and knew it had all been worth it.
“I must remember to tell her thanks,” Her throat was hitching and she was very emotional trying hard not to cry. “You make me feel as if I am the only woman in the world.”
“To me you are,” he told her huskily.
“Thank you for loving me,” she whispered.
*****
She cut the cake with her children and her husband and when they had finished eating she was in for another surprise. Her husband led her over to the dance floor and got down on one knee before her.
“What are you doing?” Sophia whispered as he took her left hand.
“Sophia Tang you are amazing and I cannot express how much I love you. I have tried but there are not enough words. You are the only woman I will ever love and I want you to know that. With that in mind I am asking you to marry me again right here and right now.” He took out a stunning sapphire square cut ring out of his jacket pocket and slipped it onto her finger after taking off the diamonds he had given her on their wedding day.
