I tilted my face to him. “Nor would I.”
We stared at each other for a moment, a lifetime of words unsaid silently passing between us. Just as they always had, though, their tone changed.
“Question, new girl…”
“Yes?”
“How pissed do you think your brothers would be if they walked in on us christening the kitchen counter?”
His hands clamped down on my waist and he lifted me onto the cold stone surface. His body pressed between my legs, and the smallest moan escaped my lips.
“Displeased would be an understatement, I imagine, but we could try it and find out.” His laughter shook through his body, and my thighs clenched against him. “Or we could take this to the basement. I feel we have unfinished business down there.”
He looked over his shoulder at the basement door. “Does that mean it’s my turn in the shackles?”
I nodded. “I believe the bloodstains are still on the floor, if that incentivizes you.”
Another rumble coursed through his chest. “Show me…”
With a step back, he let me down from the counter. I led the way to the basement that I had once called home. The Dark One was not far behind.
“I do not believe that I ever agreed to give up my room for yours,” I said, baiting him further.
“Oh, you will by the time we’re done.”
His laughter followed me down the stairs to the darkened space and wrapped around me, just as he had my heart, my soul—my very being. The fallen angel turned Dark One, fated to protect the Unborn turned vessel of destruction.
There would be no Khara without Oz.
Not now. Not ever.
