“Of course it’s insane,” Kan Tur replied. His scar wrinkled as he smiled. “But what else do we have to do?” He sobered.
“You know, Gaumarus,” he said quietly, “I joined the Order to be like the Knights in the old stories, the ones about the Military Brotherhoods crossing the gulfs between stars to right wrongs and defend the innocent. Some, including some of my erstwhile brothers, would call me a naïve fool for that. Maybe they’re right. But right now, we three are quite alone in this galaxy, and if there is a worthier cause than helping a friend search for his sister, even if it ultimately is a fool’s errand, I cannot think of it.”
Gaumarus clapped Kan Tur on the shoulder, almost sending both of them spinning. He flailed for a handhold, while Kan Tur only smiled slightly and reached out easily to stop his own motion. “I’m glad you’re coming with me, Kan Tur,” he said. He stared out the viewport, his eyes going glassy. “There’s nothing behind me now, and maybe there’s only death in front of me. But if nothing else, the M’tait will know they’ve been hurt by the time we’re through.”
