He stood at the foot of Grant’s bed. He could hardly believe it. The day before, Grant had been pasty-white and close to death, but now, he looked as if nothing had happened.
“I’m okay,” Grant said, “considering the circumstances.”
Grant glanced over at the incubation chamber, and moisture filled his eyes. Bryson could see a flash of pain cross Grant’s face. It was there one minute and gone the next. He lifted his free hand and rubbed his eyes, banishing the tears before one fell. Grant was healthy, but he looked emotionally wrecked.
Bryson couldn’t even begin to imagine what Grant had been through. His baby had to be cut out of his stomach.
“It’s so weird to see my baby floating in an incubation tank. The doctors assured me that he’s okay, but…” Grant sighed, shaking his head as if he couldn’t finish the thought.
“He’s strong.” Bryson strolled over to the incubation chamber and peeked inside. “He’s a survivor.”
But it was more than that. It was the Sweshan technology. The Sweshian people had the ability to knit bones back together and keep babies alive inside glass containers. It was really quite amazing. And Bryson was able to see it all firsthand since he was working in the medical building. Bryson turned back toward Grant.
“Yeah.” Grant’s lips twitched, as if he wanted to smile but couldn’t find the strength. “He’s a survivor.”
“You look tired.”
“It’s the pain suppressors,” Ael said. “They make him drowsy.”
Bryson nodded in understanding. “I just came to check in on you. I’m glad that you’re okay, Grant.”
“Me, too,” Grant murmured.
Grant yawned. He closed his eyes, and his fell back against the pillow. It looked as though all of the energy had completely drained out of him.
“It’s okay, love. Go to sleep. I’ll be here when you wake up.”
Grant made a non-committal sound in the back of his throat.
Ael smiled. He rose from his seated position on Grant’s bed and leaned forward. Ael kissed Grant’s forehead, his eyelids, and finally, the male placed a soft kiss on his lips. Watching the sweet gesture, Bryson started thinking about Talr. His chest ached from missing Talr. He wanted to see the male.
“I’ll check in on him later,” Bryson said in a low voice.
Ael glanced back at him and nodded. “Thanks for stopping by, Bryson. I know it meant a lot to Grant.”
“I’m glad that he’s okay.”
Ael took a deep breath. He sat down in the chair beside Grant’s bed and said, “Yeah, me, too.”
Bryson turned on his heel and left the private suite. He strolled down the hallway. Instead of meeting up with Rune, Bryson wandered around, looking for Talr’s office.
* * * *
Talr was sitting at his desk, inputting data and updating medical records, when Bryson walked into his office. He lifted his head and stared at his lover. A smile curled his lips, and his stressful morning was suddenly forgotten.
“Hey,” Bryson said. “Are you having a good day?”
“Close the door.”
Bryson pressed the button on the wall, and the door slid closed, locking them inside. Talr pushed his chair back from his desk and leaned back, drinking in the sight of Bryson.
“Take off your clothes.”
A slow smile spread across Bryson’s face. He strolled to the center of the room, stopping in front of Talr’s desk. Bryson toed off his shoes and kicked them aside. He grabbed the front of his jumpsuit and pulled the material apart. All the snaps popped open, exposing his chest and abdomen.
Talr moaned. He unsnapped the buttons on his trousers. Talr pulled the material apart and freed his cock. He stroked his hard shaft, running his palm up and down. Naked, Bryson strolled toward him. Bryson moved between Talr and the desk. He placed his hands on the desk, spread his legs, and arched his back. Talr bit off a growl. His human was perfect.
Talr licked his lips. He cupped Bryson’s ass cheeks, massaging the meaty globes. Talr leaned forward. He pulled Bryson’s cheeks apart. He flattened his tongue and licked the puckered skin. Talr flicked his tongue, up and down, swirling it around Bryson’s hole before pressing it inside.
“Fuck!” Bryson yelled out. He collapsed against the desk, his entire body shaking. Talr alternated between licking, kissing, and gently biting. “Bite me.”
Talr’s fangs dropped down from the roof of his mouth when he heard Bryson’s words. Talr struck fast, sinking his teeth into Bryson’s ass. The sharp points pierced Bryson’s skin, and he released a small amount of venom. Talr could spend the rest of the day eating Bryson’s ass, but he had to be inside of his mate. He wanted Bryson’s heat wrapped tightly around his hard cock.
Talr opened the top desk drawer and pulled out a bottle of oil. He kept his face buried in the crease of Bryson’s ass as he slicked up his fingers. Talr gave one last lick before pulling back. Talr stroked Bryson’s hole, preparing the human. He added a little bit of pressure, slowly sinking his finger into Bryson’s ass. Bryson cried out in pleasure. He pushed his hips back, forcing Talr’s finger in deeper.
Talr rose to his feet. He kept his finger buried inside of Bryson as he leaned over the human’s body. The heat from Bryson’s skin seeped into him, scorching Talr from the outside in. Talr started a slow rhythm, thrusting his finger in and out of Bryson. He added a second finger, stretching Bryson.
“Please,” Bryson panted. “Talr…I need you.”
Talr leaned back, pulling his fingers free of Bryson’s body. He wrapped an arm around Bryson’s waist, lifting the young man off his feet. Talr took a step back and sat down, placing Bryson on his lap. He wanted Bryson to ride him.
“Sit on my cock,” Talr ordered.
Bryson glanced over his shoulder. He grinned. His blue eyes were blazing as he licked his lips.
Talr helped Bryson get in position, lifting him enough to position his cock against Bryson’s hole. Inch by inch, Bryson slid down Talr’s cock. When Talr was buried balls deep inside of Bryson’s ass, he wrapped his arms around the young man’s waist. Tight heat surrounded his dick, and Talr groaned in pleasure.
Talr held Bryson, keeping him from moving. He wanted to give Bryson time to adjust to the invasion. He splayed his hands over Bryson’s flat abdomen. The human leaned back, pressing his back against Talr’s chest.
Talr rocked his hips, moving inside of Bryson. He pulled out and pushed in, again and again. Talr thrust into his lover, and Bryson moaned. Bryson reached back. He wrapped his hands around Talr’s neck, locking his fingers together. The human arched his back as he rotated his hips, and Talr groaned.
Talr moved a hand down Bryson’s chest to the human’s erection. He wrapped his hand around the young man’s cock and moved his fist up and down, jacking the flesh.
“Fuck!” Bryson arched up. “Faster,” he gasped, “faster.”
Talr moved his hand over Bryson’s erection, following the human’s desperate plea.
“I’m gonna…” Bryson said in warning.
Bryson’s ass tightened, and his cock pulsed as he came. His release triggered Talr’s, and he followed his mate over the edge. Talr’s muscles tensed, and his hips surged upward. He buried his face against Bryson’s neck, breathing in his mate, as he came deep inside of his mate. He wrapped both of his arms around Bryson, holding him in a tight embrace.
Bryson’s body went limp. The only sound that could be heard was the sound of Bryson’s breathing as he gasped for air.
“So,” Bryson sighed. “Are you having a good day?”
Talr chuckled.
Chapter Thirteen
The rest of the week went by quickly and soon, Bryson’s time with Talr came to an end. Bryson’s heart ached. He was in love with Talr. He couldn’t lose the male, not now. Their only obstacle was the outcome of the pregnancy test. But Bryson wasn’t sure if he was strong enough to hear the results. If the test were negative, the placement officer would take Bryson away from Talr and de
liver him to his next prospective mate. In the end, love didn’t really matter.
Talr held Bryson’s hand, escorting him to the medical building. Bryson walked in silence, unable to speak. Normally, he snuck out of bed and waited for the placement officer by the elevator, but this time was different. He didn’t want to leave Talr.
Talr tried to talk to him while they made their way through the moving walkways, but Bryson was afraid to speak. His stomach was churning, and he felt nauseous. Bile rose in his throat, and Bryson thought he might vomit. He swallowed down the excess saliva and gritted his teeth together. It was a good thing he didn’t eat anything.
“Bryson.”
He shook his head, refusing to speak. Talr gave his arm a gentle tug, pulling Bryson away from the crowd. He turned Bryson around, placing his back against the glass wall.
“Do you trust me?” Talr asked.
Bryson nodded.
Talr pursed his lips together in a straight line and shook his head, looking slightly disappointed. “I don’t think you will truly believe that we’re mates until I prove it you.”
Talr leaned forward and pressed their lips together. The kiss was slow and filled with so much emotion that it brought tears to Bryson’s eyes. When Talr pulled back, Bryson ducked his head. He closed his eyes tightly, trying to fight back the tears. He didn’t want to cry. If one tear fell, Bryson knew he would have a total breakdown.
Talr tucked his hand beneath Bryson’s chin and forced him to look up and make eye contact. “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” Bryson said, his voice cracking.
As soon as the words passed his lips, Bryson pulled his lower lip into his mouth and bit down, hoping the pain would prevent the tears from falling. He couldn’t cry, not now. When Bryson didn’t respond, Talr dropped his hand. Talr wrapped his arm around Bryson, pulling him against his side.
“Let’s go upstairs.”
Bryson felt numb as he walked by Talr’s side. Together, they took the elevator up to the exam room floor. The male ushered Bryson into one of the private rooms.
When Talr dropped his arm, Bryson dragged his feet, moving to the center of the exam room. He stood on the square carved out of stone with his arms hanging loosely at his sides. Bryson took a deep breath, inhaling and exhaling, trying to calm his nerves.
It wasn’t long before a thick beam of light ran over his entire body. Bryson was tempted to look at the three-dimensional image of his insides, but he couldn’t do it. He dropped his head, pressing his chin against his chest and closed his eyes.
After the last three months and thirteen prospective mates, Bryson didn’t want more bad news. Why couldn’t Talr just claim him? Why did he have to be pregnant? It wasn’t fair.
“Bryson,” Talr said in a low voice.
Bryson tried to lift his head and make eye contact with the male, but he couldn’t. He wasn’t strong enough. He didn’t want to lose Talr. He didn’t want the placement officer to escort him to another male’s home. He couldn’t go through this again. He didn’t want to be taken to another male. Just the thought of another male touching him made Bryson feel ill. There was no way he would be able to accept another male into his heart or his body.
“Bryson,” Talr said again. When Bryson didn’t respond, the male walked over to him. Talr stopped in front of Bryson and cupped his face. “Look at me.”
Bryson steeled his nerves. He lifted his head and looked into Talr’s yellow eyes.
“I love you, my mate.”
Bryson swallowed the emotion clogging his throat and managed to say, “I love you, too.”
“I love you, my mate,” Talr emphasized the last word.
It took Bryson a moment for Talr’s words to sink in, but eventually he understood what the male was saying. His eyes widened, and his mouth dropped open in surprise. Bryson stopped shaking. Peace settled over him like a warm blanket.
“What?” Bryson asked, making sure he’d heard correctly.
Talr smiled. “You’re pregnant.”
“Are you telling me the truth?” Bryson’s brows pinched together. He thought for sure that he was misunderstanding the male’s words.
Talr nodded. “You’re pregnant with my child.” He pointed at the image. “See right there. Do you see the little peanut-sized shape?” At Bryson’s nod, the male said, “That’s our baby.”
Bryson stared at the three-dimensional image. After all of the negative test results he’d received over the past three months, Bryson was having a hard time grasping the truth.
“It’s true,” Talr said, his voice soft and his gaze warm. “You’re pregnant. We’re having a baby.”
“I’m pregnant.” He said it out loud, hoping to convince himself that this was real.
Bryson placed a hand on his stomach. He looked down at his abdomen, and tears filled his eyes. Overwhelming emotions filled Bryson’s heart and vibrated through his body. Bryson was pregnant, and Talr was his mate. They were really going to end up together. Bryson could hardly believe it.
He glanced up at Talr. Bryson went up on his tiptoes and threw his arms around Talr’s neck, hugging him tightly. Talr leaned down. He wrapped his arms around Bryson’s waist.
“What do we do now?” Bryson asked.
This was new territory for Bryson. Since his arrival, Sweshan had never felt like home. He’d felt so lost and disconnected. Drifting alone. But spending time with Talr had altered his whole perspective on Sweshan. And this test changed everything. His future. His life. Bryson belonged here with Talr.
The male pulled back. He looked down at Bryson and grinned. “Now, we go home and celebrate.”
