“Here,” Becks says, placing headphones over my ears.
“Here what? What am I supposed to do?” I ask.
“You’re supposed to keep me company, princess.”
“Cash? What? You’re racing! Why are you—you need to focus.” He is insane.
“I am focusing. On my future. On the things most important to me. And before I cross that finish line, I need to ask you a very important question.”
“Jesus, you can ask me when you’re done.”
“No can do, princess. I need to ask you now. It kind of depends on if I win this race.”
That gets Beckett’s attention, his frown in place. “You fuck this up, I quit,” Becks gripes, and Cash laughs. He’s about to win the most important race and he’s casually laughing!
“Have you lost your marbles?”
“Yes. Now, focus.” Oh, now he’s telling me to focus. “I need to know one thing: if I finish this race in first place, will you marry me, Luna Monroe?”
“Can’t say I’ve ever heard a proposal during a race before,” Jimmy pipes in, which makes me remember there are five other people hearing our conversation.
“Cash, really? Right now?”
“Yes, right now. If you won’t, I’m gonna pull back and lose it. I’ve been thinkin’ out here. Without you, there truly isn’t anything. This win…it won’t be anything if I don’t have you to share it with.”
He’s crazy. Insane. The love of my life.
“Your stalling is making me nervous. I should just let up—”
“You let up and I’ll kick your ass!” I snap.
He chuckles, and Becks looks ready to detonate. “So, what’ll it be? You got about thirty seconds to decide. Be my forever or ruin me for eternity.”
My tears can’t keep up with the emotions exploding inside me. My happily ever after is coming to life.
“Fifteen.”
“Dammit, if she says no, I’ll fucking marry you. Don’t you let off that damn—”
“Yes! Yes, I’ll marry you, you crazy, crazy man!”
Cash hollers into his mic, and I can’t stop the laughter. “So, what you’re saying is I’ve advanced from creepy to crazy. I’ll take it. I’m gonna see ya soon. Got a race to win.” Then he goes silent as his car speeds past and crosses the finish line. The checkered flag flies down and the grandstand erupts. Beckett, Jimmy, and the pit crew hoot and holler, jumping at one another with celebratory hugs and back pats. I swipe at the happy tears falling down my cheeks as Cash drives into the pit showing off the biggest smile on his face.
I don’t miss the moment he takes for himself when his hand reaches up, cupping it over his heart. The place he has the number twenty-four patched to his fire suit. His brother’s number.
Then his eyes search out mine. His lips move, and even though I can’t hear him, his words are loud and clear.
I love you.
I stare back, my heart soaring with love, passion, trust. Forever. Because Cash Huntington, my man, my fiancé, my creep, is my happily ever after.
