Murder At the Flea Club Page 19

by Matthew Head

The three of us—Dr. Finney, Emily Collins, and I—sat at a table along the Champs-Elysées, not having felt like going to the general vicinity of The Flea Club for a nightcap after the dinner. We found little to say, and I bought a newspaper. I always read the horoscopes, and I asked Dr. Finney if she would like hers. “Sure,” she said. “Sign of the Fish.”

Under Pisces it said, “Look forward soon to an interruption of the tranquillity of your life. Make new friends cautiously, and do not travel long distances. Stick conscientiously to your own work, avoiding distractions. Furthermore,” I went on, as if still reading, “go home and get a little sleep, and give old friends from Africa a chance to do likewise. O.K.?”

  “O.K.,” said Mary Finney.
