  Acknowledgments

My fervent desire is that H. Rider Haggard and Arthur Conan Doyle, Knights of the Realm both, approve of this effort, wherever they may be.

A special thanks to Nicholas Meyer and the editors of E.P. Dutton & Co. for opening up the pastiche flood gates in 1974.

A formal and most appreciative bow to Ian and Betty Ballantine and Lin Carter who introduced me to Rider Haggard in 1973 with the Ballantine Adult Fantasy publication of The People of the Mist.

Noel Langley’s discussion of Justinian and Theodora in his On Reincarnation was genuinely thought provoking, as was Nicolas Notovitch’s The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ.

Linda Villareal designed the cover and etched the cover illustration of this book for the 1987 first edition. Additional acknowledgements are located in the various paperback versions to this book.
