When the time came, they bid goodnight to his family and headed outside to the carriage. Dense clouds draped the evening in an unusual twilight. Fat, heavy snowflakes sheeted from the sky, pillowing in heaps on the frozen ground. Ester nudged a thick pile that had formed on the walkway with the toe of her boot. Pulling her black, wool cloak tighter she shivered against the freezing wind. John held her gently by the elbow and led her to the carriage. Once they were both inside, she snuggled closer to him, trying desperately to get warm. His arm came around her and she pressed closer to his side.

“I spoke to my mother about the family moving into the mansion with us.”

“What did she say?” Ester truly hoped her new family would join them in the big sprawling mansion. It would be so lovely to not be alone in her new home.

“She agreed to discuss it with my brothers. It has to be a family decision.” He kissed the top of her head.

“I understand. I am just glad she has agreed to at least consider the prospect.” Ester was delighted that everything had went so smoothly with his family. She had been so scared, but they all treated her so kindly that her fears proved unwarranted.

“My family knows about you.” He hugged her closer to him. “I didn’t think it would be wise to keep it from them. Secrets have a way of coming out and in a family this size, that usually means sooner rather than later.”

“I figured you would have told them the truth about me.”

“You are not angry with me?”

“No, I am not angry. I love you John and I love your family.” They knew, and they accepted her. It lifted her spirits that she didn’t have to hide anything. There were no secrets kept from her new family, and she was free to be herself. Leaning her head on her husband’s shoulder, she sighed. Never had she expected life to turn out so perfect. She had God and her grandfather’s will to thank for all these blessings.
