“Yes, that’s right. I’m a freelancer,” said Ellie.
“And you did the recent rebranding for the clinic?” continued Oscar.
“That’s right,” said Ellie.
“We could use someone on a regular basis at my firm… It’s not the most interesting work, but we’ve been looking for someone,” said Oscar.
Ellie’s eyes lit up. “I’d certainly be interested.”
“Excellent. I’ll get your details later.”
“Networking at the dinner table,” said Minhal, shaking her head.
“She’s very talented, though,” said Harika. “It’s pure luck that she stumbled into my clinic that day.”
“Is that how you met, then?” asked Minhal.
“My clinic was the closest when her greyhound got injured,” said Harika. “So yes, that’s how we met. And when I found out she was a graphic designer, we did a barter. And it blossomed from there.”
Her parents nodded approvingly. Ellie was impressing them so far. She cleaned up really well when parents were involved. The sweatshirt was put away in favor of a neat sundress with a geometric design. She looked very clean and hip, just like you’d expect a designer to look like. She’d even gotten a fresh haircut last week, and styled her short hair.
“That’s wonderful, Ellie. Now, I hope you like spicy food,” said Minhal, getting up from her chair.
“Let me help you with the dishes, Ma,” said Harika, following her.
“I’m sure I’ll love your cooking,” said Ellie, smiling. “Harika really talked it up.”
Harika and her mother brought the dishes to the table, and they dug into it immediately. Everyone was starving, and it seemed like this was a particularly large feast. Harika couldn’t remember the last time her mother had made this many dishes. And she’d made many of her favorites, too.
“This is top notch,” said Ellie. “Thank you so much, Minhal.”
“My pleasure,” she replied.
“She’s just happy to see you put away large amounts of her cooking,” said Harika sagely.
“And there’s dessert too, so save room,” she warned.
Harika had been expecting the night to go smoothly, but not this smoothly. Ellie listened attentively to Oscar and Minhal’s stories of traveling to Pakistan and Puerto Rico, and offered her own travel tales. She had no problem with the spiciness level of the cooking, which impressed Minhal (and Harika), and when they’d all finished, she offered to help clean up, though Minhal politely refused.
All in all, it was a very successful evening, and Harika couldn’t believe that she was sitting with the same people who’d previously told her they were going to find her a man to marry. Here they were, accepting Ellie like they’d accepted Harika’s sexuality her whole life.
It seemed like Harika’s mother really was doing the labor of working through her fear. Harika didn’t like that she had to take it on, but it was the reality of being queer, or loving someone queer. And she loved her daughter enough to do it. Love was stronger than fear, Harika realized.
When she and Ellie drove back to Redwood Crossing that evening, they picked up Betsy and stayed in Ellie’s house for the night. Exhausted from the excursion and full of massive amounts of food, they curled up together on the bed. The dogs were already sleeping in the living room, next to each other. They’d become fast friends.
“I’ve been thinking,” Harika said, “it’s about time for me to take another vacation. I’m thinking Paris, since I’ve never been. And I’d like you to come with me.”
“Ah, that would be awesome,” said Ellie. “But I am severely lacking in funds right now. I’ve been getting more projects recently, but—”
“I’ll pay for most of it,” said Harika. “If you can cover your half of the hotel and some meals, I’ll get you your plane ticket.”
Ellie blinked at her. “Really?”
“Yeah, really. Listen, Redwood Crossing isn’t exactly an expensive place to live. And I am a doctor, albeit one for animals. I can afford it, and it’s a gift I want to share with you.”
“Well, I, I don’t know what to say,” said Ellie. “Thank you.”
“You don’t have to thank me with anything but your presence,” said Harika. “I think it would be wonderful to travel with you. I love you, Ellie. I want you in my life.”
“I love you too, Harika. But I can think of another way I can thank you, though, so I might as well,” said Ellie nonchalantly.
“Is that so?” asked Harika. She wasn’t sure what Ellie was getting at until the other woman’s hand crept down to her crotch and started fondling her through her pants. She got wet in record time, and felt confined in her clothes. She unzipped her pants, pulled them down, and Ellie started going down on her.
God, she was just perfect. She was incredible at oral sex. And watching those arms, that skin, with the color and lines on it, like she was a living work of art, was incredible. Harika didn’t think it’d ever be possible to get tired of seeing Ellie naked. She was gorgeous.
“Mmm, you taste good,” said Ellie, taking a moment to catch her breath. She licked all around Harika’s inner thighs, tracing winding patterns on her skin and making her squirm.
“And you are good,” said Harika, her voice half a moan.
“Excellent,” said Ellie, and she went back to licking Harika’s clit. Harika was getting closer and closer to the edge, despite how tired she thought she was. She still had the energy for an orgasm, it seemed, especially when Ellie was involved.
“Damn it, get up here. I want to kiss you,” said Harika. She couldn’t bear to just be the recipient of Ellie’s attention when she desperately wanted to touch her girlfriend’s clit too.
Ellie pulled up and they started kissing furiously, pressing their tongues vigorously against each other, like they had all the energy in the world. It was amazing what a libido could do, really, when it got sparked.
Harika reached down and started stroking Ellie’s clit. “Let’s come together,” she said in a husky voice.
“That sounds hot,” said Ellie, but her voice was faint and her eyelids fluttered as her own orgasm drew nearer.
They worked each other’s cores passionately, like they were in a race to finish first. But when Harika felt like she couldn’t hold back any longer, she spoke. “I’m going to come soon,” she said. “One, two, three…”
“Now,” said Ellie.
With a groan of release, Harika came in Ellie’s hand, and felt Ellie come in her hand. They held each other closely and shuddered together, pressing their bodies against the pillows and the mattress and each other, breathing heavily, chests heaving with exertion. Harika felt herself twitch a little as the aftershocks coursed through her, and her skin was suddenly damp with sweat.
“Just as hot as I thought it would be,” said Ellie with a weak laugh.
“Oh yeah. One of the hottest things in the world. Being touched by a sexy woman, and touching her, and oh my God…” said Harika. She was babbling, brain flooded with good feelings. There was nothing quite like sharing an orgasm with someone you loved. It was one of the best sensations in the world.
“I really, really love you, Harika,” said Ellie. “I just… I could never have foreseen you, this, us in my future, but damn, am I glad I found you.”
“I love you, too,” said Harika, gently kissing Ellie’s mouth, softly tonguing her lips. She broke away to look into Ellie’s eyes, which sparkled in the dim light filtering in through the window. “And I’m glad you found me too.”
