Blessed, Life and Films of Val Kilmer Page 15

by William Hamilton

Perhaps the flurry of new movies is just a means to an end, if Val is trying to get enough money and fame to put this thing together. The storytelling is what’s important to Val. The fame and the money aren’t that important to Val after all, but the point of his telling meaningful stories is so that we all will be blessed.

Transcript from the Mark and Brian show KLOS 95.5, Los Angeles CA,

Val Kilmer interview (transcribed by Lindsey of VK Newsletter),

  Bonus caller (after Val left)

Caller: My mom and dad were kind of elderly, and they had no idea who he was. In fact my dad when he found out his last name was Kilmer, thought he was Joyce Kilmer’s son. And he ended up somehow coercing Val to go up to our place and help him build a wall land do some other stuff around the house having no idea that Val Kilmer was actually a movie star.

  M/B: Ok. You’re kidding.

  Caller: No, I’m serious.

M/B: So, Val Kilmer volunteered to go help with some stuff around the house.

Caller: Yeah. He helped my dad put up a wall and stuff. I don’t know what my dad was building at the time, I think it was a wall. Did some small repair and did some other stuff around the house.

M/B: I’ll bet you Val thought it was really cool that your dad didn’t know who he was.

Caller: And then my folks ended up going up visiting his house. He lived up behind us. They all knew him as Val. They had no idea he was a movie star.

M/B: How long ago was this?

Caller: It was probably about two or three years ago.

M/B: Wow. Did you finally tell them who it was?

Caller: Yeah, they finally figured it out. I think it was my sister that finally told them that he was actually a movie star.

M/B: Well, I like hearing that.

Caller: I thought that was a cool thing for somebody of his stature to do.

  Transcript from AOL chat

The question is: What do you think is the sexiest part of a woman? PS, I have great knees. (host says, “This is what you get on the Internet, Val.”)

Val: I’m still stuck on that name. Great knees? Knees are important. When they work. I don’t know. I don’t really think like that.

Love Dem Lady: I love the ladies, and I was wondering if the chicks flock to you now that you’re all famous and stuff, and like was it always like that, or did they choose you before you were famous? I’m just asking because I love the ladies. Do you love the ladies, Val?

Val: I’ve never kind of been a bachelor. I usually have been with someone, and I was very shy in school, so I wasn’t really like that. You know, I liked the homecoming queen. She was -- she wanted to be an actress, and I saw her years later. That’s the only entertaining story I have. She was one of Santa’s helpers in the mall.

Val says, “Jane Fonda’s bought a place up (in New Mexico) too, and I quickly called up Ted Turner to tell him I had nothing to do with it!'”

Early in the interview a cell phone rang in the audience (at Principa). He lept to his feet and bounded off the stage into the audience. “Where is it? Where is it?” he demanded, acting very annoyed at the disruption. Tracking down the phone he reached out his hand, palm up, and curled his fingers, saying “Give it here.” The owner surrendered her phone to him. As he sauntered back to his chair on stage, he answered the phone. The audience roared with laughter, so we could only partly hear what was said. It started with “She’s busy right now. She is just being taken into surgery …” He was weaving quite an impromptu story, seemingly to amuse himself. He kept the phone for the rest of the interview. Later in the interview he was asked to say, “I’m your huckleberry.” He said "no", paused, and picked up the phone to press the redial button. He asked who the owner of the phone had called last, and learned that it was her answering machine. He paused, presumably waiting for the beep, and said, “I’ll be your huckleberry.”

Val’s favorite movie story is when Michael Mann directed “The Last of the Mohican's” and started yelling at technicians to “get that big light out of the way!” The movie makers had worked through the night; the mysterious light was the sun.

When asked, “But is acting itself the most important thing in life?”

He responded, “It certainly is to Mr. Reagan.”

  Interesting Facts:

The Chatsworth Yearbook spelled his name Val Rilmer when he was in 11th grade.

Val Co-wrote the song “Love is the Language” with high school friends the Williams Brothers’ on their 1993 album “Harmony Hotel.”

Val raced motocross, surfed, and rode in junior rodeos.

Val wasn’t as gifted with his studies as he was at acting, “I had trouble with tests. I’m spiritually dyslexic: If I’m interested in something I can remember it forever; if I’m not, I have to find a trick. I had a great chemistry teacher, but her shoes, her smock, how she smelled were more interesting than chemistry.”

Kilmer enjoys the music of Chet Baker, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, T. Rex, Jimi Hendrix, and David Bowie; the art of Picasso, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh.
