So a big thanks to the two Dougs, and of course to Lorraine.

Lastly, I have never hesitated to use other people’s clever sayings in my books, but I have also made a habit of giving proper recognition to the source. In the Ava books, the saying “People always do the right thing for the wrong reason” was attributed to Saul Alinsky. In this book, Anne Anderson says, “Think twice before you have something to say, and then don’t say it.” I don’t know if our family friend Claudette Mikelsons invented that line, but she is the only person I’ve ever heard utter it, and so I’m giving her the credit.

IAN HAMILTON is the author of thirteen novels in the Ava Lee series and three in the Lost Decades of Uncle Chow Tung series. His books have been shortlisted for numerous prizes, including the Arthur Ellis Award, the Barry Award, and the Lambda Literary Prize, and are national bestsellers. BBC Culture named Hamilton one of the ten mystery/crime writers from the past thirty years who should be on your bookshelf. The Ava Lee series is being adapted for television.
