“Why would you do that?”
“Uh, because you talk about that place all the time and how run down it is?” Xander says. “I’m gonna fix it up nice. I’m not raising rent or anything like that. Those kids you still sell the potions to need a nice place to live, don’t they? I mean it’s nice they got the outreach program you started over there but an elevator in that place would be helpful. Some new coats of paint, working heat…” I’m staring at him, moony-eyed and he grins. “You like that?”
“I love that,” I say, squeezing him tight and leaning against him. “I love that you did that.”
“Now you tell me somethin’,” he murmurs in my ear.
“What could I possibly tell you?” I say, biting my lip and enjoying this playfulness.
“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe that you’re got a little baby Tremblay in there?” He pats my stomach and I smile against this lips.
“Oh yeah, that.”
“Hey, I want you to know something,” Xander says now, leaning back. He cups my cheek and kisses the tip of my nose. “Shifter or human...doesn’t matter to me. It really doesn’t. I love you. I love this kid no matter what. Love them already.”
“Aww, you’re already a good daddy,” I say, kissing his cheek.
“I’m so happy,” he whispers in my ear. “Can’t even tell you.”
“I know.” I grin up at him. “We can tell everybody in a while. Let’s just sit with it right now.”
“Definitely. And now the good daddy needs to go get his wolf out,” Xander says, kissing my mouth one more time. “I’m all giddy and he’s pawing at the door.”
I smack his shoulder. “Go get em’!” He backs away from me, seeming reluctant but I can already see Micah and Mason trotting off to the woods. “I’ll hang out with mom and Michelle!”
He blows a kiss and I roll my eyes but I blow one back. I jog out to watch him shift before he runs into the woods. It’s my favorite part of these dinners. Sometimes I wish I could share the run with him and know what it’s like to be a wolf. But we have our own runs when he curls up next to me under a tree and we just sit for a while, comfortable in each other’s presence.
Now I watch my alpha trot off with his brothers and Luna and Alice and I think to myself: My brothers, my sisters…
Because human as I am, I’m still one of the pack now and I have a family now that’s better than any family I would have wished for.
Because nothing says love and family like the Tremblay pack.
