“Where did she go?”
The maid moved cautiously to her side, afraid of Susanna’s anger. “Your girl? I think I heard her tell Cook that she was leaving the island, and since the tide today would be out before dawn, she needed to clear out early in order to board her ship on time. No one’s seen her since last night, as far as I know.”
“Her ship,” Susanna repeated. A horrible possibility occurred to her. “Have you ever heard of a female pirate?”
“Of course, ma’am. Haven’t you? There’s several of them, but they say Scarlet Jenny’s the worst of the lot. She’s the worst pirate there is – I certainly wouldn’t want to be caught by her. There was a rumor she might be here, on this very island, last night; it’s why the guards were out. Surely you heard them? They were searching all night, with their dogs and whistles and what-not. It gave me bad dreams. But surely you don’t think she might have taken your jewels?”
Susanna pressed her hands to her throat in shock. “Scarlet Jenny?”
“Yes, ma’am, that’s what she’s called.”
Susanna collapsed into the dressing table’s chair. She looked at the boxes and purses – now nothing more than useless trash – scattered around her and thought that the room looked like a battlefield on the day after the battle. She wondered what else might be missing from the house, and how long it would take her father hear about the women Susanna had invited in last night, and to connect her to the theft. Of course, if Jenny – “Scarlet Jenny” – really was so famous, perhaps Susanna could turn this to her advantage. After all, it would have taken a pirate of renowned cunning and evil to rob the Drysdale family. If Susanna told the story the right way, her friends would fall over themselves to offer her their sympathy. Handsome young men would compete for the chance to heal her from her tragic suffering. Of course, Susanna wouldn’t tell them the whole story. Some things a woman had to keep to herself.
