“I’m thinking of hiring him to beef up our security around here,” says Nikki. I raise my eyebrows at her? “What? Tech includes security, and not just of the cyber sort. Besides, you’ve got enough on your plate. I, for one, am really concerned about the recent break-ins in the neighborhood. He’s just going to present some ideas.”
It makes sense. Part of the reason I got such a good deal on the house, besides the fact it needed a shit ton of renovation work, was that the neighborhood was still “dodgy” in part, as Hayley likes to say.
“Still doesn’t explain why I have to be there,” says Syd, grumpily.
“Because I’d rather have you put the kibosh on whatever he’s proposing now as opposed to after I submit a work order,” laughs Nikki.
“She has a point there, Ms. Scrooge,” adds Cat.
“No one ever thanks me for keeping us in the black, though,” grouses Sydney.
“I thank you all the time,” I say. “Thanks, Nik, for thinking of this. It’s been on my radar, but I’m glad you’re taking action. Let me know how it goes.”
“Oh, you should go to the meeting yourself, Cass,” sighs Lucy. She’s smiling at me with this silly grin on her face. “Have you ever seen Dane Eversoll? What a dream! I checked out his website. He’d get your mind off of Greg in a hurry.”
The room gets silent for a moment, and looks are exchanged that seem to question the wisdom or genius of a remark like that. Poor Lucy. She’s still so young or at least she seems that way, a mere 22 compared to our 26-28 around here. I don’t blame her for her wandering attraction to men, and I certainly don’t blame her for wanting to help me out of my crisis of the heart. But being in the company of a supposedly handsome man is not going to cure me of Greg.
“Um, I’m sure Nikki and Syd can handle it. Too many cooks in the kitchen and all that.” I gather up my things and head back to my office. I hear whispered scolds to Lucy and one or two others that suggest it would do me good to find someone new to fall for.
It’s not long before I hear someone come into the front lobby. I can also hear Lucy’s chirping little voice, so I assume it’s the “dreamy” security guy. Sure enough, two seconds later, Nikki and Syd stroll by. I hear them greet the guy, and then take him into the conference room. But almost an hour later, I hear the door again, and more subdued voices—Lucy, and another woman’s voice. I wonder who it could be this time, and in answer to my mental question, the com on my phone buzzes.
“Yes?” I say.
“Cassidy, you have a surprise visitor. I’m sending her back now.”
She clicks off before I can tell her no. I make a mental note to explain protocol to Lucy—that she should wait for me to say who I want to see and whether or not I want them to come to my office or wait in one of the perfectly comfortable chairs in the lobby.
A few seconds later, Jill pops in at my door.
“Surprise, CJ! Just had to come and see my maid of honor in person. Let’s get this wedding started!”
I stand up and before I can say anything, she rounds the desk and clutches me in strangling hug.
Great. Let the fun begin.
