“Yes!” I told him, pumping my fist in the air.

I wanted to fucking hug him. But I refrained.

“Yes. Thank you, Coach. I appreciate it so much. And of course I brought my uniform. I always have it with me, just in case, I don’t know, some miracle happens and I’m called back. And this my miracle. Thank you so much!”

“I get it, Ward. You’re grateful,” Coach Kramer said, with a small smile on his face. “Now, go get ready or you’ll be late. Don’t make me regret this.”

“I won’t,” I told him, unable to resist the biggest smile ever that was crossing my face.

I guessed Coach Kramer wasn’t that bad, after all.

I hurried to get ready, but first I called Olivia, and told her to head over to the stadium if she could. And to bring Kylie.

“You’re not kidding?” she asked me. “You really get to play again?”

“I really do!” I told her. “I couldn’t believe it, myself.”

“We’ll be right there. Kylie, honey, good news!” she called out. Then she came back to the phone. “We were drawing and she drew me in the picture, with you and her. I was touched.”

“Awww,” I told her. “That’s great.”

“Yeah. She’s reluctantly putting away her colored pencils, so we’ll be on our way soon.”

“Olivia?” I began, but as soon as she said, “Yes?” I thought better of it.

I didn’t want to tell her yet. Not on the phone.

So instead, I just said, “Thanks for bringing Kylie and coming yourself, on such short notice like this.”

“No problem,” she said. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I just wish I could go out there and cheer for you.”

“Oh, don’t worry,” I told her. “You will be, in my mind.”

  Chapter 33

  Marvin

I couldn’t believe I was back in the game. I was determined to make this last game my best ever – at least when it came to the amount of effort I was giving.

And I was on a roll, if I did say so myself. I had thrown three scoring passes and ran in a touchdown myself. Now, I looked out across the field and saw an opening, but it was far away. I wasn’t sure my throw was still good enough to make it.

The cameras had panned in on me, and then on Olivia and Kylie. Coach Kramer had made a press announcement about me before the game started, explaining why I was on the field, and finally resolving the question of What will happen to Marvin Ward’s football career?

Now, the local news was doing some feel good story about how I had rebounded for one last game, and one last chance to be a good dad to Kylie – and that Olivia, my high school ex, was helping me do that. They were really going all out, and portraying it as some all-American happy ever after story.

But I didn’t have time for the emotional aspect of all of this. I had to pay attention to the game going on in front of me.

Right now, a member of the other team was coming up behind me, so I dodged him to avoid the sack and then I decided to take the chance and give it my all. I went for it, throwing the football directly to my own open teammate who was at least twenty yards down the field.

He caught it and easily ran it home, because no one was expecting me to attempt – let alone make – a throw that far. They were probably letting me play out of pity and thinking I would barely do anything right – like in previous games. Even though I had been surprising them this time by playing a lot better, I didn’t think they had expected that.

The crowd went wild, with everyone stomping and clapping and hooting and hollering.

I could distinctively make out that some of them were shouting, “The Ward is Back! The Ward is Back!”

I sure was back, and it felt good!

Too bad this was my last day of playing, ever. But it was bittersweet, because while I didn’t want to be going out at all, at least I was going out on a high note. Not a super low, bitter, depressing one like before.

It sucked that I had come back and was riding high just to leave again for good, but at least I had this chance. I was grateful to the coach.

I was grateful for a lot of people in my life lately: the coach, Olivia, Greg, who probably would have taken time out of his busy professional schedule to come to this game today so he could see me ride out into the sunset, if only he had known about it in time, of course Kylie, and even my dad, who had helped make it possible for me to get to this good place in my life. I guessed he was making up for lost time, which might have been much later than I would have preferred, but, as I knew from standing here on this field today, was better than never making up for it at all.

After that stellar throw of mine, the Leviathons were up by a lot. We had been expected to win this game, but not by this much, and to face the Boston Flags in the Superbowl, because they were expected to win their own division championship.

There was always the chance that we could blow this, though, especially, now that I was out here, if I choked like I had in the past. So, everyone was over the moon happy that we were doing even better than expected, and they seemed as surprised as I was that it was in large part due to my performance. Once the clock ran down, we were the victors, and the crowd was going wild again.

The coach rushed onto the field after the game, and it was clear that he was trying to talk to me. I couldn’t hear him over the roar of the crowd and the din of all the other players talking to reporters and each other on the field, so I got in really close.

“What’s that, Coach?” I asked him.

“Good job! You more than surprised me,” he said.

“Well, thanks,” I told him. “I promised I wouldn’t let you down.”

“You sure held up your end of that bargain,” he told me. “And I don’t want you to quit now. I need you in the Superbowl – that is, if your game is still gonna be on this hard.”

“It fucking will be!” I exclaimed, and I skipped the high five, the fist bump and the butt pats and went straight in for a hug.

“Well, geez, Ward, there’s no reason to get that excited,” Coach said awkwardly.

But he was smiling, as if he was glad I was back. And so was I.

The next day, Olivia and I were at my place, still celebrating my miraculous comeback victory. And when I say celebrating, I mean that we had been fucking each other’s brains out over and over since last night. My dad and Sandra had been kind enough to watch Kylie at their house.

“Is this the cock of my big, brave football player?” Olivia was saying now, as she got down on her knees in front of me and took my cock in her hand.

“I don’t know,” I teased. “Why don’t you taste it so you can be sure?”

She did, taking my cock into her mouth and looking up at me with mischievous eyes. At the same time, I took in the view of her big tits, curvy ass and small waist. I was so glad my petite, voluptuous Olivia was back in my life – and back in my bed.

She moved her lips all over the head of my cock while her hand moved up and down my shaft. She sucked on me while grabbing my balls and playing with them. I had never felt so good in my entire life – except for the times that I was inside her.

“You feel so good,” I told her. “I don’t ever want this to end.”

“Oh, really?” she asked, and began sucking on my cock even harder.

I was torn, because I wanted to flip her over and fuck her, but I also wanted to cum in her sweet, hot mouth. I decided that there was plenty enough time for both.

As if reading my mind, she said, “You deserve a nice release. I want your cum in my mouth.”

She didn’t have to say it twice. I reached down and grabbed a hold of her nipple so I could twist it in my fingers while she kept sucking my cock. She took it all the way in her mouth, deep-throating me and making me feel so fucking amazing.

“Mmmm,” she moaned against my cock, and it made me get even harder and start to throb.

“Here I come,” I tell her. “I’m gonna cum in your mouth.

“Yeah,” she moaned, as I began shooting it inside her mouth.

My cock slid out of her throat a bit as she eagerly swallowed my cum. I pulled her hair back a little so it wouldn’t get in it. She winked at me to let me know she liked that, so I pulled it a bit more roughly while I finished emptying my cum into her mouth.

“Mmmm,” she said, gulping it down and then licking the head of my cock to slurp up the rest of it. “It’s even better than ice cream.”

I handed her a towel after wiping myself up, and then laid down on the bed. When she was done, she laid down beside me and I put my arm around her.

“That was amazing,” I told her. “Thank you.”

  “No problem, Superstar,” she said.

“You know, I don’t think anything is better than ice cream,” I told her, and we laughed.

“We’ll have to have some of that later,” she said. “To further celebrate your big win.”

“Yeah,” I agreed. “That’s a good idea. We’ll bring Kylie. I’m supposed to drop by my dad’s and pick her up in a bit. You can come with me and then we’ll go.”

“Sounds like a plan,” she said.

I was just about to drift off into a blissful nap when I heard a knock at the door. And when I say knock, that’s an understatement. It more like booming, incessant pounding.

“What the hell?” I said, scrambling to throw on a robe.

But it was too late. The person who was banging on the door obviously had a key – and didn’t have any patience at all.

I watched in horror as a wide-eyed, crazed-looking Sasha barged right into my bedroom, where Olivia and I were still stark-raving naked.

“Sasha!” I exclaimed, while finishing pulling the robe over my body and chastising myself for not getting the locks changed. “What are you doing here?”

“I came here to tell you that I know you’re dating Olivia!” she shouted. “No wonder you fired me! I saw on the news that you guys are dating now. Oh, really! No wonder I’m out of a job, and the whole plan I had made for us, Marvin.”

The she hissed in Olivia’s direction and yelled, “Yeah, it was all because of you, you bitch! His little high school girlfriend, coming back to steal him from me right when we were about to get started as a couple.”

“None of that is even true,” I started to protest, but she cut me off.

“I told you I would ruin you, Marvin,” she said. “And I’m going to. Because I know that the judge and Kylie’s mom didn’t know, at that hearing where Little Miss Innocent testified as to your fitness, that you two were in a relationship! And I’m going to tell them. Then they’ll have a basis to reverse it and take Kylie away from you. And that’s what you get for ruining my life! Now your life will be ruined.”

“Sasha, that isn’t true, either…” I say again, more frantic this time, but she’s leaving the house just as quickly as she came.

I supposed there was nothing to do to change her mind. And I wanted her gone. So, I didn’t go after her. I just sat down on the bed, next to Olivia, who had covered herself up with the blanket on the bed.

“What the fuck?” she asked. “I knew that chick was off her rocker, but woah.”

“Yeah, I have no clue,” I told her. “I’m really sorry about that. She has gone absolutely crazy.”

“Do you think that the court knowing that we’re together will hurt your custody case?” Olivia asked me.

“Probably,” I said, and shrugged. “I mean, I’m sure the judge wouldn’t be happy to hear that my raving character witness was also my girlfriend.”

“Yeah, that doesn’t sound too good,” Olivia agreed.

“But it’s not like there’s much I can do about it. And I’ve learned the hard way that I have to just let the chips fall where they may. I need to stop thinking so negatively and instead try to tell myself that maybe those chips will end up falling down in a way that actually works out for me – like you coming back into my life did.”

“Aww, that’s so sweet,” Olivia said.

My heart was pounding, but I didn’t want her to worry about things that were outside of our control, so I kissed her on top of her head and said, “Yeah, sometimes I have a good side of me that comes out.”

  Chapter 34

  Olivia

Today we were gathered to celebrate Roxanne’s wedding day. Although I wished that it could be timed better due to the tumultuous events of my personal life, lately, I also knew that today was about her. And I was doing my best to focus on her, not me or Marvin or even Kylie.

It wasn’t hard to do that, considering that I was standing right beside her, as her maid of honor. I was able to admire her lacy white wedding dress and her beautiful flower bouquet, as she said her vows to her new husband and then he bent down to kiss her.

They had been through a lot together, which was a story for a whole other day, and I was happy that everything worked out well for them. It showed me that true love really does exist – even during that time in my life where I felt utterly convinced that it wasn’t going to happen for me, at least I didn’t lose all hope for humanity.

At least I knew that happily ever afters could work for some people. Even though, for a long while, I didn’t think that I would be one of those people.

But now, I was finally beginning to see that perhaps it could happen with Marvin and me, too. He had really turned everything completely around. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen with the custody case but I knew that he had Kylie’s best interests at heart now, completely. And I had grown quite fond of her.

It seemed as though his contract would be renewed with the Flags for another season next year, and that would be different on our home life, but I didn’t mind staying back to watch Kylie. Maybe we could even bring her on the road with us sometimes, when I had long weekend breaks from school. Of course, though, we had to wait and see what happened with the court case.

“I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the officiant said, and I cheered for my best friend along with the rest of the wedding guests.

I cheered for her and I cheered for me, too. For believing that love really does exist, and that it can conquer any obstacles in its way.

  ***

Later, at the reception, Roxanne came over to me and threw her arms around me.

“Congratulations!” I told her. “It was a beautiful ceremony. It all came together so beautifully.”

“I know. Exactly how I wanted it. Thank you so much for being the best bridesmaid, ever!” she told me.

“No problem,” I answered, smiling to myself because it really wasn’t a problem at all.

Roxie was too anal retentive to leave the planning or details of her wedding day up to anyone else. Even when I tried to help, she wouldn’t let me.

And she hadn’t wanted a bachelorette party or shower, due to her social anxiety. She said she had to deal with people enough at her job as a lawyer, so the last thing she wanted to have to do in preparation for her wedding was to go out to some loud, crowded club or to pretend to “ooh” and “aww” at gifts she received but didn’t really need.

She didn’t even want speeches at this reception because she said it made her nervous even to have to see other people in the spotlight. And she didn’t want everyone staring at her while hearing embarrassing stories about her youth.

I wouldn’t have done that to her, but I got where she was coming from with the whole wedding toast thing in general.

Therefore, I really hadn’t had much to do. We had gone for a small luncheon with a few of her other friends – some of whom were mutual friends of mine as well – and I had arranged it with the other girls and had paid for it, but otherwise, I didn’t have to do anything. It was the easiest maid of honor assignment ever.

“It’s not like you gave me much of a job to do,” I told her now, voicing my thoughts.

“Well, I’m giving you a job right now,” she said.

“Oh yeah?” I asked, glad there was something I could
help with. “What’s that?”

“It’s party time, girl. And I’d like you to be responsible to get people moving out onto the dance floor.”

“Okay,” I told her, wanting to groan, but trying to look excited, instead.

Dancing really wasn’t my thing, but it was her day.

First, I went and told her table of bridesmaids that they had to help me with this endeavor. They happily agreed, moving over to the dance floor to shake their tail feathers.

Then I went over to Marvin and Kylie, who were still finishing off their wedding cake, which had tasted delicious.

“Hey guys, come dance with me,” I said, pulling them both up from the table by their hands.

“Oh, you know I have two left feet,” Marvin said.

“Come on, Daddy!” Kylie coaxed. “It’ll be fun.”

“Whatever my girls want, my girls get,” Marvin replied.

We went over to the dance floor and all three of us starting rocking out to Blondie. Then, when a slow song came on, Marvin pulled us both closer to him and we swayed back and forth.

“I knew it wouldn’t kill either of us to dance,” I said jokingly. “This is actually pretty fun.”

“It sure is,” Marvin said. “This was a nice wedding.”

“And when are you two going to get married?” Kylie asked, looking up at both of us with a devilish grin on her cute little face.

I laughed, but Marvin answered her honestly.

“I think that’s something we’ll have to take care of very soon,” he said.

“What?!” I replied, surprised by what he had said.

“Well, I figure we’ve already wasted too much time finding our way back to each other,” he said. “I don’t want to waste much more time before having an official life with you.”
