  Chapter 1

The movers carried the last of her boxes into the two-story brick house. She dreaded unpacking her belongings and putting everything away where it belonged. The air conditioning hadn’t kicked in enough, with the front door left wide open for the past four hours. Summer had broken its barrier, the southern heat seeping up from the south, exactly where Jade had gotten away from, that and her dead beat ex-husband. At thirty-six, she was looking for a new lease on life, a future unlike her past, and starting on a new job come Monday.

Today, she needed to unpack or else dinner would be take out, and well, work clothes on Monday would be a bust. Jade signed the paperwork, agreeing that she had all the contents from the moving truck. Yeah, everything that she could see. Hopefully they hadn’t snatched anything without her knowledge on the drive over.

Did she have trouble trusting people? Hell yes. Spinning around, she headed into the kitchen and grabbed a knife, opening the boxes marked pots and pans. At least she’d had enough forethought when packing to make it clear what everything was. Her labels came in handy. Her ex-husband used to say she was OCD but she’d never been diagnosed with the disorder. No, she just liked to keep things neat and tidy; something that rat bastard didn’t have a clue about. Jade had a knack for being overly organized but it didn’t hurt anyone and hardly seemed like a bad trait given the dozens of complaints considering her ex.

Behind her she heard a rapid knocking on the open front door.

“Did you forget something?” she asked, assuming the movers had returned to grab their keys or maybe a bottle of water they left unattended.

“Hi, I’m your neighbor, Holden Foster.”

Jade heard his voice before she spun around and laid eyes on him. Holden had a skin-kissed tan and dirty blond hair. She tilted her head up to stare into his green eyes that sparkled in the sunlight. Jade didn’t know what the man did but she bet he looked good doing it. Sweat dripped down his forehead. He looked strong and she dared to admit only to herself that yes, she imagined him naked.

“Do you mind if I come in?” he asked, not waiting for an answer as he stepped in past the foyer, his eyes glancing over the piles of boxes. “You look like you need a hand.”

“No, I got it.” She wasn’t going to let some handsome guy handle her. She could lift and unpack what was left. Besides, the heavy lifting was already done. Her furniture was in her bedroom, the sofa was in the living room, the worst was done. “It’s really no big deal.” She didn’t want to make a fuss over it. “I’m Jade Brooks,” she said, introducing herself. She put down the knife and offered her hand, shaking his.

“Nice to meet you,” he said. “What brings you to Spring Mills?” His eyes glanced briefly over her before thoroughly examining all the boxes.

“My job.” It also had to do with the divorce but she didn’t want to talk about Paulie. Not again. He was the low-life scum that scraped to the bottom of one’s shoe. He stuck and no matter what, getting rid of him seemed near impossible. Well, Jade found a way how. She moved.

Her abruptness to his question did not seem to deter him. “What do you do?” Holden asked, watching her closely. He smiled, grabbing the knife from the counter as he opened another box in the kitchen, helping her unpack. Slowly he worked the pots and pans from the box, placing each item on the kitchen counter.

She didn’t stop him from helping. It wasn’t as though he’d find anything embarrassi
ng in her kitchen at least. Now the bedroom, that was another story. She retrieved the pots he helped unbox and she put them away, one at a time. “I’m a school teacher, exciting right? What about you?” She had learned that most people had certain assumptions about her being a teacher, like she loved kids. Well, she did like them, but she was not sure she ever wanted any.

“If I tell you, I’d have to kill you,” Holden said, laughing.

Did he enjoy teasing her or did it just come naturally to him? “Come on. You do not work for the C.I.A.” She would not believe his story. Maybe he was a pathological liar. No. She could not start comparing this nice-looking stranger to Paulie. She put the last of the pots and pans away before they opened another box.

Smiling, Holden nodded. “You are right. I work for the military. That’s all I can divulge.” He helped her remove the contents and handed her each item that belonged in the cabinet, starting with the spice jars. “I take it you like to cook.”

“No way. We are not changing the subject.” Jade pointed at him. He had to be a tease. Was he like this with all the girls he met or just her? “Give me more than that about your job.” Already she imagined him in green fatigues looking sexy as ever. Yeah, she could definitely see him in a soldier’s uniform.

“I work on a lot of classified projects.”

That sounded intriguing to her. Were they top secret projects that involved unexplained phenomena? She always had a wild imagination. “What’d you go to school for? Or didn’t you?” She knew she was being nosey but he was being cryptic. She wanted answers!

“I have my doctorate in theoretical physics.”

“Wow he’s hot and he’s smart.” Jade didn’t hold back, even when she knew she probably should shut her mouth.

Holden blushed. “Thanks. What about you? What do you teach?”

“Definitely not science. I stay away from the sciences as much as I can,” Jade said. “I teach third grade spelling.” She finished with the last of the spices and then he handed her the larger boxes of pastas, cereals, and sauces. Thankfully there was plenty of storage space in her new house.

“I’ll remember to go to you when I have to write a letter. Of course most of it will have to be redacted, so that’ll be an extra challenge.” Holden managed to finish the box and started on the next one labeled ‘dishware’.

They worked well together as a team. “I think I’m going to owe you dinner,” Jade said. Her stomach grumbled and at least the air conditioning had begun to cool the house down, but the thought of cooking seemed impossible. They still hadn’t unpacked the utensils to eat with, the plates to eat on, or the glasses for drinking. Not to mention she hadn’t had time to do any grocery shopping. “Any good places that deliver?”

“I’ve got dinner simmering next door. You can come over and eat with me,” Holden said.

Jade nodded. It would be good to get away from the boxes for a little while. “You don’t mind the company? Not sick of me yet?” Jade joked. She was sick of herself, mostly because of the amount of work she had to do. She should have paid the movers to unbox everything but that would have cost her far more than she could have afforded. Instead she’d probably end up living out of cardboard containers and takeout.

“Come on,” Holden said, finishing the box they’d started before he headed toward the front door.

Jade grabbed her house key, locked up, and followed him across the street.

He shoved the key into the lock, turned the handle and let Jade inside first.

“Nice place and everything is unpacked. I like it even more. Want to trade?” She slipped her sandals off and followed Holden into the kitchen. The house was painted a warm sage with wooden blinds and a few scenic paintings of the beach. They were all places that looked tranquil enough to go and visit.

“Nice try.” He opened the lid to the pot on the stove and grabbed a wooden spoon, stirring the dish. It smelled wonderful.

“You have a package on your counter?” she said, showing him the padded manila envelope. “Did you forget to mail it or open it?”

“It came this afternoon. It was on my porch when I opened the door to come visit you. Open it up.”

“Seriously?” He wanted her to open his mail?

“Sure. I get tons of free samples to try out on the internet for review purposes. I don’t even remember what’s getting sent to me anymore.”

“Must be nice.” Jade shook her head, he was unbelievable. She tore the edge of the package and removed the bronze and gold cylinder with multiple numbers and symbols in seven rows marked in black. She’d never seen anything quite so intriguing. “What is it?” she asked, holding it up to him. “Do you think it connects to the internet?” It seemed electronic but foreign.

With his back to her, he didn’t yet turn around. “Is there a packing slip or return address?” he asked her.

“Nothing,” Jade said and shrugged. The package didn’t even contain a postmark. “I think someone dropped it off on your porch. Maybe it’s military grade, special spy stuff.” She teased him, curious what it was intended for.

“I’m not a spy,” he said, paying attention to the stove and then opened the cabinets to pull out plates and then the drawers for silverware.

Jade turned the dials, feeling the soft click like a lock as she felt the contents warm in her hands. “Holden.” Her voice hitched slightly as a button popped out from the bottom, begging to be pushed.

Without thinking, she forced the interior cylinder that had jutted out back in, causing the cylinder to glow an eerie golden hue.

“Shit!” Holden cursed, rushing toward Jade’s side as he locked eyes on the cylinder in her grasp. Did he know what was going on? Had he recognized something? The look on his face, the flash of fear, was as if he knew what was about to happen.

The mysterious cylinder burned in her palms and as she let go in an attempt to drop it, Holden caught it from beneath her grip, just as the device opened a portal, but to where, Jade had no clue. She’d seen wormholes in movies and television shows. The swirl of blues and grays hummed as if it were alive, breathing and calling her to come toward it.

“Jade.” Holden’s voice was stern and held more than just a hint of warning.

Curious, she stepped toward the translucent material, her fingers grazing the substance before stepping through it. She had heard him but had paid no attention, as if a drug had released from the device and begged her to step through, her mind not entirely her own.

  “Damn it!”

She heard his voice as he chased after her through the wormhole. Was she crazy for stepping into the unknown? She could not stop herself. In the back of her mind she swore it had been no different than moving to a new city, but she knew she was wrong.

The material pulled and tugged at her, dragging her from Holden’s home as she stepped out into a darkened corridor. The walls were made of steel, gray and felt cold, unlike home. Her feet clanked on the metal floor and she attempted to be quiet as she took each step forward, curious to where they were.

“What the hell were you doing?” Holden asked, storming through the wormhole, chasing after Jade. It closed and disappeared behind him. He grabbed Jade by the arm, spinning her around. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done?”

She shook her head. “Do you know where we are?” He did mention that he worked for the government. They must have dropped off the package, but why? What the hell was that strange cylinder?

“Keep your voice down,” he said, his voice reducing lower to keep from drawing attention to them.

“Me? You’re the one yelling at me for bringing us here,” Jade said. She didn’t even know where ‘here’ was. “You didn’t have to follow me.”

“Actually I did.” He showed Jade the cylinder. “We couldn’t get home without it.”

“You know what it is!” Jade accused, stepping closer, her toes practically on his as she stared up at him, eyes narrow, and fists clenched.

  “Maybe.” His mouth shut as
footsteps echoed through another hallway and were fast approaching. “Quick.” He took Jade by the hand and pulled her to follow him down the hall, away from the incoming intruder.

  Jade didn’t move fast enough.

“Stop!” A man’s burly voice shouted into the void. “Seize them at once!”

A storm of boots against metal pounded over the floor.

Holden pulled Jade with him, forcing them away from the soldiers in the opposite direction. A wall stood in their path, making it impossible for them to escape.

“What now?” Jade’s voice hitched as her heart sped up in pace. Small and dainty, she tried to fight back, squirm away from the men, but it was no use. They forced her hands behind her back and clamped them tight with an electronic cuff.

The man who had spotted them earlier detained Holden, restraining him in the same handcuffs, as he forced Holden onto his knees. “You should know better than to consort with criminals!”

A solider handed a silver metal baton to the man who seemed to be in charge. Pushing the black button on the handle, it extended and then electrified.

“No!” Jade shouted, her eyes widening in horror. “Let him go.”

“Get her out of here,” the man ordered his soldiers.

They each grabbed her by an arm, pulling her away from Holden. Jade glanced back over her shoulder as she was forced away. The baton came down, the electricity pulsing through the stick as it jolted Holden onto the floor.

Turning the corner, she fought the men, trying to writhe from their grip, but it did no good, the bindings on her wrist tightened with such force that all she could do was muster a scream in agony.

The fighting to escape stopped. “I’ll go with you.” She had no other choice. One of the men clicked a button in his hands, releasing the additional tension from the handcuffs as he loosened them slightly from the intense binding that they’d caused. Breathing a sigh of relief, she felt defeated and the journey into where she didn’t know, had only just begun.
