Chapter 1
Bile rose in Kiki’s throat. Memories from her youth flashed through her mind. The sight of blood had never bothered her but she hadn’t seen a kill like this since she was a child. “It’s hard to tell but I think that is Jacque Maurier.” She looked around the two-bedroom apartment. Magazines littered the floor. A glass lay on its side at the dead man’s feet. The gray couch was pristine except for the dark red soaking into the material.
Zane put the bloody fingers of the dead man on the scanner until it beeped. “It is. This is messy. Worse than we have seen from PURE or the Ladon.”
Kiki had killed. This kind of torture, with each slice meant to bring more pain, brought up emotions she had worked her entire adult life to suppress. “Maybe it wasn’t them. Did Jacque have any enemies? Owe money to someone he shouldn’t? Just because he’s PIA doesn’t rule out the possibility this is... something or someone else.”
He looked over the mangled man’s corpse. “A Columbian necktie isn’t something you see in L.A. often. A gang used this M.O. to send a message to a rival a few years ago. LAPD had to deal with the backlash, maybe Jacque was into something he shouldn’t have been.”
Kiki wet her lips, willing her stomach to settle. “He was a skilled weapons tech and designer. Do you think someone’s after the DK10 blueprints?”
Zane squinted at her before he answered. “How did you know he was working on the DK10 designs?”
“Jacque was the one who assigned me my gun. I assumed that was how you knew him.”
Zane looked down. “No. I met him before that at my brother’s funeral.”
“He was a friend of your brother’s?”
Zane shrugged. “I guess so.”
“I’m sorry, Zane.”
He looked at the scanner. “I didn’t know him well. They assigned him to the factory.”
Kiki huffed. “Senator Davidson may have some information on his current projects or his personal life.”
Zane looked past Kiki. His face hardened to a scowl. “What’s he doing here?”
She felt him before she turned. Her body hummed with excitement. Fire and power that represented one man. Jordane.
He walked up to them, surveying the dead man before turning to her. “Are you all right?”
Kiki rolled her shoulders, fighting her unease and temper. She tried not to notice how his tanned skin defined every muscle in his thick arms. How his black t-shirt clung to his chest. “I’m fine. Why are you here?”
“Jenner suspects this was the Ladon. If a demon kills a human, he comes under my purview.”
Zane’s eyes narrowed. “What does that mean?”
“If a demon kills an innocent, he dies,” Jordane said.
“No trial. No...”
Jordane’s eyes met Zane’s before they flashed green. “Valen possesses the power to... read any member of the demon race. If a demon kills an innocent, he dies.”
Zane passed the scanner to a team member. “We can’t confirm this had anything to do with the Ladon or PURE. If a human did this, it has nothing to do with you.”
Jordane nodded. “Correct. If a human killed this man, I will not interfere with your justice system.”
Zane flexed his hands. “Since when do you dictate to us...”
Jordane’s tone dropped. Power radiated through him. It was clear he was not used to being questioned. “Since the moment you picked up that weapon.”
Zane’s jaw ticked. “You keep this up and I will have you arrested.”
The air distorted. Warmth brushed against her skin, causing her hair to tingle. Kiki looked around. She couldn’t see anyone but knew they surrounded her. She felt them. Zane’s eyes darted around too. His senses picking up the disturbance.
Jordane’s eyes flickered before he spoke. “You oppose me. Try to use your human court system against me and I will shut down every one of your weapons. I will... revoke them.”
Zane huffed. “I was a soldier before I had a DK10. I...”
“Will die in unimaginable pain if I choose.”
Kiki put her hands out. “Stop this, both of you. You’re acting like fucking teenagers. You want to go measure your dicks and see whose is bigger... fine. Get away from my crime scene.”
Zane squinted at her. “Are you giving me orders?”
“You’re being a prick. So is he. This is a murder investigation, show a little restraint.” She glanced down at Jacque. “And some respect.”
“You’re right. Jacque’s killer needs to be apprehended. Jordane and I will shelve this discussion... for now,” Zane said.
“Good.” She turned when Jordane shifted his stance. “What?” Kiki said.
“I am deciding.”
“On what?” she asked.
“Whether to strip your team of their weapons.” His voice was low. Uncaring. As if he were deciding on an ice cream flavor.
“Jordane... please.”
His eyes took on an emerald glow. “I will allow this experiment to continue but only because you have asked it of me.”
She wanted to say, go to hell. That she and her team were not an experiment regardless of where the PIA got the DK10 power source. She also had the urge to kiss him. Since neither choice would help her solve Jacque’s murder, she nodded. Kiki needed to get her focus back. Jordane made her uneasy. It wasn’t his physical presence. She knew he wouldn’t hurt her. He could own her, and with her past, she could never let that happen. Not again. “Zane can you give me a few moments. I would like to talk to Jordane about the DK10’s.”
Zane’s clenched his hands into fists. “Make it quick.”
Kiki led Jordane away from the scene.
Kiki stopped Jordane by a PIA squad car. She put her fingers on his chest, irritated by his treatment of Zane. Her fingers snapped away as the warm sensation traveled up her arm, pooling in her chest. She looked down, stroking her eyebrows to calm the fire racing through her body. What the hell?
“It’s because you are my mate,” Jordane said.
Kiki took a long breath, wanting to deny his ridiculous claim but she knew demons sensed lies and she wasn’t ready for the truth. “I’m a person not an animal.”
“You talk to them. I believe you prefer them to humans.”
She thought back to the first animal to teach her about her gift. The first creature she loved and the
ultimate pain that love cost her. “Well duh. Humans are dicks... except for Laura.”
“And demons?”
Her hands went to her hips. “Bigger dicks.”
“We will have to work on your perceptions... and your vocabulary.”
Kiki huffed. “Good luck with that.”
Jordane smiled. He seemed rusty, like it wasn’t something he did often. “When you have lived as long as I have you find persistence triumphs over luck.”
“You can save the... I know everything because I’ve lived forever shit. I’m not interested.”
He grabbed her so fast, she didn’t see him move. He pulled her against his body with her chin tipped up. Her heart thumped loudly but it wasn’t from fear. “You may lie to others but not to me. You feel the connection between us. I will give you some leeway with that team of yours but make no mistake. If they disobey my warning, it ends.”
“What does that mean?”
“You know the answer to that question,” Jordane said.
“Let me go.”
His hand slid down her arm, while his eyes searched her face. “So defiant.”
Kiki backed away, calming her treacherous body’s reaction to the large warrior. “I barely take orders from the PIA. If you’re expecting me to take them from you...”
“I do not wish to command you. I want your word that you will not allow Zane’s interest in you to go any further.”
Her body stiffened. The flame of arousal faded, replaced with anger. “There is nothing between me and Zane. Not that it’s any of your business.”
Jordane’s eyes flared. “Everything about you IS my business. I want your word or...”
“There isn’t anything between me and Zane and there won’t be. He’s my squad leader. I follow his orders... on the job.”
“Zane is not your leader. While I understand why he’s enamored with you, he will die if he persists in his... advances toward you,” Jordane said.
Kiki’s hands turned to fists. The will to keep her anger in check was an ongoing battle, and she was losing. “Zane has never...”
“He will. He can’t keep his eyes off you.”
“It’s not like that.”
“It is for him.”
Kiki shook her head. “You don’t have the right.”
Jordane shrugged. “I gave you this warning as a courtesy. He touches you, he dies.”
“You don’t kill innocents.”
“A man that interferes with another’s mate, is not innocent.”
Kiki shook her head. “That’s bullshit and you know it. Human women can date more than one man and...”
Jordane’s eyes flared green. Power crackled around them. “I am not human. This is the only warning I will give you.”
Fear replaced anger. Not for herself but for Zane. Jordane was serious. She held Zane’s life in her palm. “This is why demons are bigger dicks.”
“As my frame is larger than the average human. I would assume...”
“Oh, shut up. You wish that’s what I meant,” Kiki snapped.
Jordane shrugged. “You brought it up.”
“Ha ha,” she said, before her curiosity got the better of her. “What would you do if he asked me on a date? You can’t kill a man for liking someone.”
“I would force him to challenge me and kill him in combat, as is our custom.”
“Overconfident much? Zane is the leader for a reason. Even Jenner would have a hard time taking him down.”
“He will not have his weapon when he fights me,” Jordane said.
Kiki crossed her arms. “He doesn’t need the DK10, Jordane. Zane was a Navy Seal before he joined the PIA.”
“He will die in seconds.”
Her heart squeezed. She believed him. It wasn’t his arrogance. It was the way he moved. Even when he walked, he flowed across the ground as if it worshiped him. She chewed her lip to stop the smart remark. While she enjoyed a good verbal debate and loved a good fight, this one would get an innocent man killed. “Zane isn’t my boyfriend and neither are you. Zane has the right to dictate my actions as part of the squad. You have no rights at all.”
Jordane touched her chin. “You will not touch him?”
Kiki stared up at him. She heard the sirens in the background but her heart drowned out the noise. “No, but I won’t touch you either.”
Jordane smiled. “I take responsibility for my actions and this relationship.”
“We don’t have a relationship,” she snapped.
He leaned forward to whisper in her ear. “We will.”
Kiki shoved him. While his body didn’t move, she was propelled away from him. “Back off, Jordane. I’m nobody’s bitch.” She walked away, feeling his eyes on her backside.
Kiki tried to think of an excuse to get Jordane away from the crime scene. The tension between him and Zane was escalating, and she feared the result of their altercation. She leaned over the couch, looking at the dead man’s ear. “They cut his earlobes. This kind of torture doesn’t fit with the Ladon or PURE. A Ladon could have impersonated a friend or colleague to get the information he needed from Jacque, without all the torture.”
Zane looked over the body. “This killer enjoyed what he did. Considering the Ladon’s origins, it isn’t much of a stretch to think one of them is psychotic.”
She gave Zane a dirty look. He shook his head, realizing his mistake.
Jordane took a deep breath. “The man who killed your agent was human but if he was a member of PURE, then this man’s death was orchestrated by the Ladon. We must find out who ordered this assassination.”
Kiki and Zane both turned to Jordane. “You know who killed Jacque?” she asked.
Jordane shook his head. “No, the human killer is unknown to me. I have never scented him before.”
“You can scent the killer?”
“Yes,” Jordane said.
“Can all warriors...”
“Yes. We are hunters,” Jordane said.
She glanced at Zane. “If you met the killer would you know he was the one who killed Jacque?”
“Yes. I have shared the killer’s scent with the pack. If any member of the pack finds him, I will bring him to you for questioning,” Jordane said.
Kiki startled. “To me?”
“Jenner assigned you this investigation.”
“Yeah, but you don’t recognize Jenner’s authority.”
“As a PIA agent, no. He is however a member of our royal house.” Jordane said.
Zane looked at Kiki. “Jenner has both the PIA brass and the demons in his pocket?”
Kiki rubbed her mouth. Zane didn’t realize that everything Jenner did was for his sister. He didn’t care about his connections or status with the PIA as long as it furthered his goal of keeping Laura safe. “Let’s just say if anything happened to Jenner the shit storm would destroy the PIA and us.”
Zane rubbed his mouth. “Fuck me.”
Jenner walked up as if he knew they were talking about him. “Problem ladies?”
Kiki held back her smile. “No problem, Boss. We are just discussing... jurisdiction.”
Jenner looked between Jordane and Zane. “We’re working together on this. Get used to it.” He turned to Kiki. “Can I have a word with you?” He led her away from the crime scene.
She stopped, glancing back so she could monitor Jordane and Zane. “What’s up?”
“Laura and Valen asked me to include Jordane and his warriors in any investigation that involves the Ladon.”
“How did you sell that to the brass?”
“Marcus is our director, and he’s more motivated to take the Ladon down and find those women than anyone.”
Kiki felt a pang of regret. She often forgot her director was a demon. He went to great lengths to hide it but those close to him, knew his motivation. “I can’t imagine what he is going through knowing his bride is...”
“Being held hostage, raped and who knows what else. Me either, but it gives us the leeway to h
andle demon related investigations how we choose.”
Kiki nodded. “Okay, but Jordane and Zane…”
“Both want you.”
She punched his arm. “No need to be a dick.”
Jenner put his hands on his hips. “I’m not used to having to worry about you.”
“You still don’t. I’m armed and not afraid to pull my gun on any man if he gets out of line.”
Jenner smirked. “That’s the Kiki I need right now.”
“What do you want? This isn’t a dating pep talk.”
“No. I asked Valen about the warriors, he said even he and Dante knew little about the warrior code. Only that they’re loyal to the royal family and will do anything to protect their species... especially the queen.”
“Why Laura?”
“I think it has to do with the king business. Dante didn’t want to talk about it and that concerns me.”
“Are you asking me to spy on the warriors?” she asked.
“I want to know more about them. You will work with Jordane. Find out what kind of man... and demon he is.”
“That sounds like spying to me.”
“Laura trusts Jordane. I want to know that trust is warranted.”
Kiki squinted. “You are using Laura to get me...”
“I’ll do anything to ensure her safety. So will you,” Jenner said.
Shame made her take a quick breath. “You’re right. Sorry.”
“Never apologize to me for your... dedication to my sister.”
“Sure. I’ll check out Jordane’s demon ass but...”
“Kiki, Laura is a demon too.”
“She was human first, and she is exempt to my demon rules.”
Jenner sighed. “Fair enough but if you are Jordane’s...”
Kiki held up her hand. “If you finish that sentence, I will drop your ass right now.”
