Our line moves and I feel sick. Like I might seriously vomit. Why did I let Harmony talk me into this? As if sensing my thoughts, she turns, smiling at me.
I’m so close to the stage that I can see the judges through the curtain. My eyes go right to Norman because he is wearing a shirt from Warrior Queens. I can’t believe that he watches it!
Harmony struts across the stage to the ‘X’. She turns and stares at the judges, obviously waiting for them to ask her something. When they don’t, she twirls again and makes her way off the stage. Which means it’s my turn. Inhaling, I plaster a fake smile on my face and force my feet to move. Left foot. Right foot. Left foot. Until I’m finally at the ‘X’.
I do the obligatory spin and start to walk away when I hear a voice.
“I love your costume. Which of the Queens are you dressed as?”
My heart is pounding as I look up and find Norman smiling at me, waiting for an answer.
“Uh, I’m dressed as Scarlett.”
He nods. “You paid a lot of attention to detail. Does your sword have the traditional blade color?”
Again, I’m shocked that he actually watches Warrior Queens.
I reply, “I based my outfit off the comic books, so the blade is silver, but the hilt has the house colors woven through it.”
Lifting my sword from the hand-pressed brass scabbard, I hold it out so he can inspect. I’m shocked when he gets up and walks over. I try not to notice how good he smells, but come on – Norman freaking Vinson is standing right in front of me, jagged brown hair and all.
He smiles and says in a tone that only I can hear, “You did a great job. Scarlett is my favorite character.”
“Mine, too.”
It’s crazy, but I feel like we have a moment.
