‘That was close,’ said Jane after Rebecca had thrown the toaster in the bin and gone back inside. All the gadgets in her and Deep Fat’s squad were pressed up as closely as they could to the outside kitchen wall, which was still in early morning shadow. ‘We can only be thankful she didn’t look down.’

  Deep Fat used Marty to contact Blade and tell him the news and then it was decided they should all try to move as quickly as possible off the top patio and down into the rockery where they could better hide.
