Horus folded his arms smugly. “No deal then.”
Before Silas could toss his brother’s soul back in the river, I hauled at his sleeve and dragged him aside.
“Look,” I said, my voice lowered. “Maybe we should do it.”
“But I made a promise to you.”
I shrugged. “I just–I don’t see another way at this point. We’re running out of time. Set is unleashing chaos on the city and soon all of Egypt. And who knows what he’ll be able to do once he finds his actually body.” He still didn’t seem convinced. I took his hand in mine, willed him to calm. “We can put those gold cuffs on his body before we resurrect him.”
I could see him fighting with the logic, his face twisted every which way. This was killing him. The pull between his heart and his mind, between duty and life. I bounced back and forth on my heels as I waited for him to come to the only clear choice we had to pick.
“Fine.” He stormed over to where his brother hovered next to Anubis. “You get your way. Again. We’ll put you in this stone and resurrect your body, with the promise that you’ll tell us how and where to find our father.”
“Deal,” Horus replied, self-satisfied. He practically hummed with brazen superiority.
“Don’t make me regret this,” Silas said through gritted teeth.
He inhaled a deep sigh filled with regret and glanced between Anubis and I before slowly holding out the quartz that dangled from his fingers. He touched it to his brother’s soul and a blinding light flashed. One second Horus was there, the next…his amulet glowed with life once more.
“Are you okay to walk?” he asked Anubis as he stuffed the rock back in his pocket.
Anubis pushed to his feet. Most of his flesh had filled in, but his usual jet-black skin still paled with the ashy grey of death. But he nodded. “Yes. I can make it back.”
“Good.” Silas turned toward the exit. “We should get out of here now.”
We both followed him up and out of the deep cave system of the Underworld entrance and emerged to the world above. I sucked in a fresh breath of air, let it fill my lungs and wash away what little it could. But the outside world didn’t look as it did just a short while ago, when we’d last left it.
“Oh my god…” I whispered with a rush of tears that tickled my eyes. Disbelief held me in place.
I scanned the horizon over the vast landscape that was once alive with dunes and oases. With a city and small villages full of people. Mountains of sand covered every inch as far as the eye could see. The Great Pyramids in the distance were half swallowed by the work of Set. The faint hint of rooftops smattered in the dunes below.
“The entire city is…gone,” Silas spoke with strain.
I shook my head and failed to contain the tears that spilled out over. “All those people.” The three of us turned and shared in the sorrow, chests heaving with the flood of emotions. “We’re too late. They’re all dead.”
