was.

Thus, Ayshen became a solitary mystic in a land far away from her birthplace. She used her Gift unbeknownst to anyone, even her husband. No one knew of her ability to gaze into water and see things. She lived an ordinary life, raised her family and practiced her art discreetly. If a friend was having issues about something, Ayshen would gaze into her bowl of water and look for helpful answers. She would steer them away from trouble and set them on course toward more beneficial ends.

“Think more before quitting job; things be better if you sit and talk.”

“I have good feeling about this opportunity; you should follow up on it.”

“Maybe see your doctor about this pain; you have it too long.”

Her English wasn’t perfect, but her friends understood her easily. She was a reliable friend who always gave great advice. People turned to her naturally, never suspecting that behind the causal guidance lie a great mystical talent.

The only thing Ayshen did openly with her friends – and she assured them that it was a popular form of entertainment back home and was not to be taken seriously - was to read their coffee cup. Her friends loved it, because she made it so entertaining. When Ayshen noticed something that needed deeper probing, she gazed into her bowl of water; and then found a way to relay the message if further action was required. No one suspected that they had a mystic among them.

It was during a casual coffee cup reading with her neighbour and long-time friend, Evelyn, that Ayshen saw the first signs of trouble. There were a lot of light and ominous darkness in Evelyn’s cup. Ayshen’s heart skipped a beat then hammered away. She had to use every bit of self-control she could muster to appear casual about what she saw and then dismiss it as just a silly cup – this is only entertainment.

Ayshen pulled out her silver gazing bowl and filled it with holy water to do a proper reading as soon as Evelyn left. As in the coffee cup, Ayshen saw that there was definitely death, a lot evil and just as much divine help on the horizon. They were at the eve of something monumental.

And then Fatma Nene’s image appeared in the water.

The time has come, child. Your help is greatly needed. The events have been set in motion. There is no turning back.

“What events? What am I helping with?”

  You will know.

“You are speaking in riddles again.”

I disclose only what I am permitted to reveal.

  “This is so hard.”

You were guided your entire life for this mission. You will do your part. That is all that is asked of you. It is Divine Ordinance.

“Divine Ordinance? That sounds so serious.”

  It is God’s will.

“Then it shall be done as God wills it.”

  Amen.

There were no more images in the water. A divine message was delivered to Ayshen. Fatma Nene had called it Ordinance. Ayshen’s entire body buzzed with the impact of that single word.

She braced herself for the challenge ahead.

  It was coming.
