Kelly and Troy said goodbye and left the house.
“He’ll be all right,” Troy said. “He has a solid family behind him. I’m not saying he’ll stay out of trouble, but he’ll be all right.”
Kelly slid her gloved hand into Troy’s hand. He looked at her in surprise as they walked down the street. Christmas was underway. The streets were decorated. People were lining up at the post office to mail presents and cards. It was late afternoon.
“Are we out in the open now?” he asked, squeezing her hand.
“I figured your hands are cold,” she answered. “I’m helping keep them warm. Besides, there’s nothing to hide.”
“No one knows that we were involved,” he said. “Mrs. Hammond spoke up when the DA’s office called her, and once Mr. Cardew started kicking up the dust, everything moved pretty quickly.”
“I didn’t want you to be at risk in the police department, if anyone thought that you were giving away information. People in small towns have long memories.”
“Not too long, I hope. I don’t want people to remember that Lucas was accused of the murder.”
“They’re going to remember that Scotty Stark is a killer,” she said.
He didn’t argue with her prediction. A girl was dead, and the killer was caught. The justice that she’d hoped for had been won.
“How about a date?” he said.
“A date?”
“If we’re not hiding anymore, why not come out in the open?”
“We weren’t hiding,” she said with dignity. “We had dinner a few times.”
“How about dinner and a movie? Or take-out and Nexflix?”
“How about a run on the Trail this weekend?”
He was ready to answer when they both heard the sound of a window opening above them.
“Mrs. Hammond!” Kelly greeted. “What are you doing with your windows open in this weather? It’s only twenty degrees out!”
“I wanted to invite you two to dinner,” the old lady said as she beamed down at them. “I’m putting my tree up this weekend and I could use some help.”
“We’d love to,” Kelly replied. “What are you having?”
Mrs. Hammond laughed. “Oh, I haven’t decided yet.”
“Make sure it has lots of onions,” Troy called up. “We work better with onions.”
