weekend?”
Emily handed her an invitation.
“Thank you, do you really want me to come?” I asked.
“Of course I do girl, so I will see you there then right?”
“Yes of course.”
I was excited and scared at the same time because I had no idea what just happened. Emily walked away and walked back over to Mary and all her other friends.
“What was all that about?” Mary asked handing Emily her books back.
“Oh nothing, let’s just say my party is going to be one she will never forget.”
They all started laughing. The bell rung and I was still standing by my locker. All of the sudden a voice came up from behind me.
“I see you got invited too.” The voice said.
When I turned around I saw Lyle standing behind her. She slammed her locker door and dropped her pencil.
“Here let me get that for you.” Lyle said and reached down for the pencil.
“Thank you.”
“Listen, I don’t know if you already have any plans or not, but I was wondering if you would like to go to Emily’s party with me?”
My heart started to race I though I was going to pass out. I couldn’t believe Lyle was asking me this.
“Of course I will. I mean no I don’t have any plans and I would love to.”
“Okay, so can I pick you up around six o’clock then on Saturday?”
“Six is great, I will see you then.”
When the bell rung for us to go home I ran quickly out and jumped into my dad’s car.
“Someone is in a good mood.”
“Lyle Crabtree asked me to go to Emily’s party with him Saturday dad.”
“I hope you told him yes.”
“Duh, dad.”
“Well I guess we better go pick you out a dress what do you say?”
“Really dad?”
“Of course angel.”
We went to the place mom always said she was going to take me when we were going to pick out my wedding dress in the future. I found the perfect dress.
“How does this look dad?”
“You look beautiful dear.”
Tears started to fill his eyes.
“Then this one is the one I want.”
The rest of the week went by super fast and it was the day of Emily’s party. I waited patiently for Lyle to arrive. While I was sitting there my father approached me.
“Martha, my dear you look beautiful. Your mother would be so proud of you dear.”
“Really dad, I wish she was here.”
“She is sweetie, she is right here.” He said and pointed to her heart.
“I know dad, I love you.”
The doorbell rang and I quickly gave my father a hug and answered the door.
“Wow, you look amazing.” Lyle said.
“Thank you.”
We stood there paused for a moment.
“Oh yeah, I bought this for you.”
He handed me a box and I opened it. In it was a beautiful necklace.
“This is so beautiful. You did not have to do this.” I said.
“I know but they’re almost as beautiful as you are.”
My face glowed and a huge smile came across my face.
“Are you ready to go?” He asked.
“Yes, I am.” I replied.
He helped me into his limousine and we drove off.
We finally arrived to the party and it was exactly how I thought it would be. Lyle and I walked into the Emily’s and everyone was there dancing. Emily spotted us and walked towards us with Mary.
“Martha girl you look great.” Emily said.
“Thank you.”.
“Lyle you look good too, are you two here together?”
“Yes, we are.” He replied.
“That is sweet.” Emily replied.
“Thanks, if you will excuse us I owe this beautiful girl a dance.” Lyle said.
He grabbed my hand and pulled me out on the dance floor. We started to dance and I was so happy. It was like my fairy tale was finally coming true.
Meanwhile Emily and Mary and the rest of her gang stood over in the corner watching.
“She thinks she can just come in and steal the spotlight off me she better think twice.” Emily said.
“What is she even wearing?” Mary asked.
“I don’t know but I think it could use a little makeover. What do you say girls?” Emily said sarcastically.
“I agree.” Mary said.
“Mary, go grab her for a minute and tell her to come here.”
“Okay.”
As Lyle and I were dancing I saw Mary coming over towards us.
“Hey Martha, Emily wants you to come over and talk to her for a minute.”
“Okay, I will be there in one second.”
Mary walked away and Lyle looked at me and smiled.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?”
“I’m not sure of anything at the moment.”
The music stopped and Lyle and I stopped dancing.
“I am thirsty do you want something?” Lyle asked me.
“Sure.”
“Okay, I will be right back.”
He gave me a kiss and walked off. All of the sudden the whole room went pitch black and the music started playing really loud. I was getting scared because I couldn’t see anything and I didn’t see Lyle. I felt something go over top of my head and someone grabbed me. When I woke up Emily and all her girls were standing around me.
“You shouldn’t have come to my party dog girl.”
They all started to laugh and put the pillow case back over my head. I felt them putting some type of outfit on me but I didn’t fight it because I knew I couldn’t out power all of them. I sat there in this dark box like cage think until I heard Emily’s voice over the microphone.
“People listen up we have a special treat for you all.”
Everyone stopped and focused their attention on Emily.
“We have a live dog girl here, Mary show them.”
She pulled off the sheet and I saw everyone laughing at me. I started to cry. I didn’t know what they had done to me. Lyle walked to the front.
“Emily, cut it out and let her go now.”
“Oh come one Lyle were just having some fun.
At that very second Mary and the other girls poured dog food all over me. It was at that point I just closed my eyes and pictured me in my fair tale. Little did I know that it wasn’t what I would expect either I was a dog there too. I would be known forever as dog girl.
“Emily, I’m not telling you again let her go.” Lyle said.
“Okay, gosh.”
They let me go and I ran as quick as I could outside. Lyle walked up behind me and hugged me.
“Are you okay?”
“No, I knew I shouldn’t have come.”
I started crying and Lyle grabbed me and held me tight.
“Emily is a witch.”
“No, she is right I am a dog.”
“No, she is far from right Martha. You are the most beautiful girl I have ever laid eyes on.”
“Why me?”
“What do you mean Martha?”
“You could have anyone Lyle, why do you want me?”
He smiled and grabbed my hand.
“There is only one you that’s why.”
It was at that second I realized my fairy tale came true. All the pain and sorrow I have been though was for this and even though they transformed me in my mind as dog girl I knew better. I now had my Prince and he rescued me. Lyle and I sat there looking at the sky.
“Martha, I love you.”
“I love you too.”
I don’t know if we will live happily ever after but this is a good start.
