“That’s quite a one-eighty, dad. Not that I’m not pleased, but what brought on this change?”
“Your mother and I had a lengthy conversation the other day. I reached out after I received the quarterly report. She’s done a fantastic job, and the stockholders are happy. I won’t go into the details of our conversation, but it made me reflect on how I became involved with Lindsey and all the hurt and pain that followed.”
“Next time I see mother, I’ll thank her for whatever she said to you.”
“It wasn’t only her words.” He drew a heavy breath. “When you come face-to-face with your own mortality and receive a second chance, it’s God’s way of forcing you to take stock of what’s important. That’s family, and that’s what we all are.”
Since the moment the discord between them began, he never thought the day would come, where he would bear witness to his father making amends with Ava. He replayed the moment of their hug once more in his mind and smiled. His father was right, his heart was whole now that his family has been pieced back together. He has a relationship with his mother, and now his father has finally accepted the woman he loved. Life can only get better from here.
Chapter Forty
“Who the hell are you?” he asked, entering the cabin of the private jet.
“Your fairy god-mother. Sit.” She gestured towards the cream-colored leather chair.
His chestnut eyes narrowed as he sat facing her. “You bailed me out of jail, but you won’t tell me your name.”
“I’m Lindsey. The answer to your prayers.”
“What prayers?”
“To bring down anyone with the last name Harrington.” She handed him an already poured glass of champagne.
He rejected the glass with a lift of his hand. His eyes bore into her as if he wondered what she wanted with him. “You know Justin?”
“Yeah,” she spat. “His fuckin’ father is responsible for the death of my baby.”
“What does that have to do with me?”
“Well, you have an ax to grind, don’t you? Justin stole Ava from you.”
“You know Ava?” His eyes lit up.
“Yeah, and I heard from a reliable source they’re engaged. So, tell me Brandon, are you on board, or what?”
His lips merged into a grimace, and his fist slammed into the palm of his hand. “Where are we headed?”
“San Diego. It’s time we bring down every one of those bastards.”
Brandon leaned forward with his finger pointed in Lindsey’s face. “Ava is off limits! You better not touch a hair on her head.”
Lindsey fell back into her seat, allowing the fruitful flavors of the champagne dance on her tongue. Her eyes shifted towards him. “She’s all yours. When I’m done, she’ll need a shoulder to cry on.”
