Together, they had designed their ranch house and turned it over to an architect and a builder. The house was spectacular with five bedrooms, four bathrooms, an office for both of them, a thoroughly modern kitchen, a stable for his beloved horses and mules, and a swimming pool for the hot summers. They’d built in a treed area of the property, and they had cottonwoods for shade.
“Don’t forget, Rob and his wife and the boys are coming down next week,” Hilly said. “He wants to take the boys caving.”
Clint’s rocking chair stilled, as Hilly had expected it would. She turned to look at him with understanding.
“You always do that, honey. You always freeze when I mention caves.” She smiled lovingly. “Not all caves are portals of time travel, otherwise spelunkers would be shooting around in time. Besides, I’m sure Rob and the boys wouldn’t half mind ending up in 1881 Tombstone.”
“Promise me,” Clint said in a low voice. His expression was grave.
“I promise you, Clint, I will never set foot in a cave again. Like you, I wouldn’t run the risk. I love you too much, and I love Marie too much.”
The relief on his face made her heart melt.
“I love you too much to let you,” he said softly.
Hilly reached for his hand and squeezed it with a tender smile.
“Good! By the way, I’m pregnant again—in the family way, as you like to say. It’s a good thing we have five bedrooms.”

About the Author
I began my first fiction writing attempt when I was 14. I shut myself up in my bedroom one summer and obsessively worked on a time travel/pirate novel set in the beloved Caribbean of my youth. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to hammer it out on a manual typewriter (oh yeah, I’m that old) before it was time to go back to school. The draft of that novel has long since disappeared, but the story still simmers within, and I will finish it one day soon.
I was born in Aruba to American parents and lived in Venezuela until my family returned to the United States when I was 12. I couldn’t fight the global travel bug, and I joined the U.S. Air Force at 18 to “see the world.” After 21 wonderful and fulfilling years traveling the world and the birth of one beautiful daughter, I pursued my dream of finally getting a college education. With a license in mental health therapy, I worked with veterans and continue to work on behalf of veterans. I continue to travel, my first love, and almost all of my books involve travel.
