“Why would you think something’s wrong?”
“Because your smile speaks volumes and you haven’t given me a genuine one since Gem arrived.”
Gem had been in town for all of two days, and already Bobbi’s quiet life in Nottinghamshire was becoming more reminiscent of Los Angeles. They had spent the majority of their time watching films, doing their nails, drinking, and gossiping about everything and everyone. Bobbi had desperately tried to include April, but she was sorely different from Gem in every way, and found it difficult to adjust.
“Speaking of Gem,” Bobbi sat up straight and gave a sweet fake smile. “She thinks you’re pretty hot stuff, stud.” It was Chris’ turn to roll his eyes. “She wanted me to hook the two of you up.”
“Hook us up? What are we, fish?”
“Seriously?”
“Speaking of seriousness, what the hell are you wearing?” Bobbi understood exactly what Chris meant. Gem’s arrival also meant that Bobbi was back in tight leather trousers that showed off her bum, and tops that revealed how ‘squeezable’, as Gem had put it, her boobs were.
“So is that a yes?”
Chris stared at Bobbi as though trying to see right through her. “Is that what you want? Me to date your best friend?”
Bobbi was sure one of the gymnasts had started doing a Catherine Wheel midair as fast as that Spanish mouse that always used to be on the kid’s channels. “She’s really nice when you get to know her. You never know, the two of you may hit it off.”
Right on cue, Gem walked into the bar wearing a figure hugging black playsuit. Bobbi’s heart sank as she sat down beside Chris, wrapping her arm around him. “What are you kids gossiping about?”
“Nothing much,” Chris replied. “I was just telling Bobbi that I’ll have to reschedule our riding lessons for the next few weeks.”
“Oh no,” Gem complained, throwing a sad look in Bobbi’s direction. “Here I was thinking I’d borrow Bobbi’s noble steed and get you to teach me how to ride, too, while I’m here.”
Bobbi’s thoughts turned to the first day Chris had gifted Shadow to her. The idea of anyone except the two of them riding him was like a knife through her stomach.
“I’ll be out of town for a while.”
“Out of town? You never mentioned that…”
“The business isn’t going to take care of itself, Princess.”
It would have hurt less had Chris punched her in the stomach with full force. She couldn’t be sure, but Bobbi had a feeling that he was leaving now because of her. Chris threw a £20 note onto the table and got up to go.
“You’re leaving already?” Bobbi asked, silently praying that he would change his mind, stay, and make everything bearable again.
He nodded slowly. “Got a flight to book and a suitcase to pack,” he said simply. Barely 5 seconds later, he was gone.
“So, did you make him realize how madly in love with me he’s going to fall?” Gem asked, grabbing hold of Bobbi’s beer and taking a long sip. “That guy has got the best arse in all of England, I’m sure. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into it.”
“Gem, listen –”
“I need to go shopping. I passed a shopping center on the way down here - surely they have a Victoria’s Secret or something there. The lingerie I brought with me isn’t worth the light of the moonlight when that god is in the room. Come with me?”
Without paying any attention to what Bobbi wanted, Gem grabbed her hand and dragged her out of the bar.
“Gem, we need to talk.”
“We can talk in the car, biatch! Get in!”
Realizing that there was no possible way to win against her, Bobbi did as she was told and clambered into the Audi R8 that Gem had rented the previous evening. As soon as the door was shut, Gem put her foot on the accelerator and went speeding down the country lane.
“Gem, slow down! There’s no need to go so fast!”
“We’re in a sports car, Bobbi. Seriously, the country has made you go soft. You never used to worry about this kind of stuff in LA.”
“LA didn’t have uneven surfaces and sharp turnings every second.”
“Oh look, there’s Chris!” Gem honked as they approached Chris, walking through one of the fields, his hands in his pockets. He looked up, but didn’t smile, making Bobbi’s heart sink.
“That man has made my panties go all soggy! Desperate times call for desperate measures!” Gem sped the car up even faster.
“Gem, stop!”
“Desperate times, Bobbi!”
As they sped around the corner, a herd of cows began to cross the road. Bobbi grabbed hold of the dashboard as Gem swerved the car to avoid them.
“Gemma!”
Chris heard the scream, the crash, and then silence.
