“—Ceryna doesn’t just want me. Or did you forget what I stole from her?”
“You still have it?”
“Aye. I’ve stored it in a safety deposit box at the Treasury of Marsen.”
“Nova, sir, what is it that you’re talking about?” Duck asks.
I sigh heavily and grumble, “The lost scabbard of Nateca, though I don’t think it should be called lost anymore.” Then I say, “I don’t have my key—that’s in Richtenfel.”
“So we’ll steal it,” Leluna suggests.
“So we’ll steal it,” I agree.
I stand, taking a few cautious steps toward Leluna, gauging her reaction. When she doesn’t move, I stand just before her, staring her down with an intensity I’m not even sure I ever possessed before. “I’ll help you with this. I’ll go with you to Ceryna for this rebellion or whatever, but I need your help in return.”
Leluna considers the ultimatum for a moment before nodding in agreement.
“Right. What would that be?” She asks.
“Help me find a sage stone and break this stupid fucking binding on my magic.”
Without words, a silent promise forms between us. I know we haven’t worked through everything festering between us. There’s too much left unspoken and raw, but for now, it’s enough to move forward. I’ll gladly run to whatever hell the future holds so I can bury my past and forget about the things that hurt too much.
As if I could forget about him.
