The vampire’s electric blue eyes search her face. “Are you hungry?”
“No.”
“Do you need anything?”
“No.”
“You seem well. No negative aftereffects?”
“No. I’m fine.”
The vampire pushes to his feet. “I’m pleased you came to no harm, Millicent.” He hesitates, then surprisingly adds, “Extremely pleased.” He nods. Striding with fluid male grace to her bedroom door, he opens it to leave.
“Leonidas?”
He stops, turns. “Yes?”
“What about my chain?”
“You no longer need it.”
“No?”
“No, for I intend to remain by your side.” Expressionless as always, emotions locked tight, he steps out of her room, closing the door behind him.
Millicent smiles. Suddenly, her whole world seems brighter, richer, lighter—a much more interesting place. It’s full of animals, angels, werewolves, and one particularly captivating, yet strangely vulnerable vampire. Someone she’s unexpectedly become fond of.
The Jugulo hides himself from me. He doesn’t trust himself. Who hurt him so deeply? Or worse, who did he hurt?
For the first time in years, Millicent feels excited, even hopeful. She likes the vampire. Maybe, just maybe, he likes her, too.
