When they arrived at the cabin at Sacred Forest, Hunter dismissed the elf driver and lifted Dove over the threshold. The secluded house was decorated with fresh flowers and an array of dishes. They fed each other the chocolate covered strawberries like they had the cake earlier, except they avoided making a mess.
Dove used the restroom to freshen up while Hunter lit candles and tried to open a condom box someone left on the dresser. Dove stopped him. “I meant what I said.”
“You wanna have my babies?”
She blushed and undid his bowtie. “I want us to have everything, and I don’t wanna wait.”
He brushed her cheek. “I love you, Dove Riddle.”
“You mean Dove Griffin.”
He kissed her as she removed his tuxedo jacket, vest, and dress shirt.
“Why was the wedding secret?” He released her hair and kissed her neck.
“I didn’t want my parents to ruin it.”
“Oh.”
She untucked his shirt and lifted it above his head while she took off her shoes. “And I wanted to see your reaction.”
“Stunned. Whose number was it?” He unzipped her dress. It puddled at her feet, and she wasn’t wearing a bra. Her breath hitched, and his heart stopped. They’d never seen each other naked before.
She unbuckled his trousers. He slid them down, still mesmerized by the body he was about to explore.
“October’s, but we even changed her voicemail in case you tried to call.”
“You always were brilliant.”
They removed the rest of their clothes and stared at each other.
“The debit card?”
“Gabe.”
He brought her close and strummed her spine.
She massaged his short hair. He looked like his dreamself. Instead of scaring her, it made her cling closer.
Hunter’s voice sunk low. “Are you scared?”
“You won’t hurt me.” She held his muscular shoulders as he moved her gently to the bed.
“I’ve never been with anyone.”
“Pack rules. I know.”
“No, I waited by choice. For you. There’s been no one but you.” His hand touched her cheek and traveled slowly down her body. “Not even a kiss.”
She traced his lips with a finger. “Not one?”
“Never. Only yours.”
She couldn’t say the same, and he knew it, but that’s not why he’d told her.
They began dating right after high school. He’d dated other girls, but when he kissed Dove, he chose her for life.
She wanted to melt into him, her hands not able to feel enough. She sprinkled kisses across his chest as he moved against her.
Their heat mingled, the necklace he’d made her pressed between them.
They studied every inch of each other, becoming one flesh like magnets that could only be apart for a second before re-attaching. The connection moved them to soft tears never leaving their eyes. Each movement, every touch as man and wife strengthened the bond of their souls.
A magical yellow mist coated their skin like dew.
Hunter paused, breathing hard. He backed away. “Run!”
“What?” Her eyes were dazed, hair splayed across the pillow. She’d thought the first time would hurt, but he was so incredibly gentle. She wanted him again. She never wanted to stop. “Hunter, that was amazing. I didn’t even bleed.”
He squeezed the blankets on each side of her. “Dove. You need to—” He’d mid-shifted when they finished, but now his bones cracked. That had never happened. It was never supposed to. As a child of a werewolf and a human, he should only be able to mid-shift, but here he was, bones snapping. “RUN!”
She yanked the sheet off the bed and wrapped it around her like a cloak, already aching from the separation. Their honeymoon was supposed to be a night of togetherness, not running away; but Dove knew what a current generation’s full-shift meant. The first full-shift was always mindless, a signal for each side to prepare for war. Time elapsed.
From watching horror movies with Kai, she knew to lock the door on her way out and grab her phone. Then she ran deep into the Sacred Forest, hoping she’d find help along the way.
A cabin window shattered. She saw into the wolf’s mind as he chased her.
